So, I’ve been reading some web-serials...

For those who don’t know, web-serials are essentially stories posted online, with some ranging in size from short tales and others reaching the length of several novels. The quality usually varies as their typically isn’t any oversight and so the author is in charge of handling all of that.

In particular, some good ones are written by Wildbow, who has garnered a massive following with his superhero story turned cosmic horror, Worm, his urban fantasy story, Pact, and his current Biopunk story, Twig.

Check them out if you have free time. But be warned, happy is a subjective thing and the endings tend to be bittersweet.

Oh, and here are the Goodreads pages:

What’s Your Favorite Fantasy Setting?

In fictional works, there are a bunch of different settings to choose from these days.

There’s Urban Fantasy, encompassing the fear of the things that go bump in the night when you’re walking past a dark alley.

There’s Dark Fantasy, where everything is bad and you don’t try to be a hero, just do what you have to in order to survive.

High fantasy stories are epic in scale and feature multiple races, the sort of world where your actions will affect the outcome of the world.

And then there are low fantasy stories, which tone done the scale of the fantasy aspects and focus on the individual?

I’m partial to Urban Fantasy (Dresden Files was my gateway into the genre), but what about you?

Rejection Hurts

So, about a month ago, I decided to try my luck in getting published in a magazine and an anthology under my real name. I figured it was time to take a risk and put myself out there, looking for acceptance, and devoted time and effort into these short stories that I had rarely done before.

So, naturally, when they rejected my submissions, I felt like I was hit by a brick being hurled my way by a professional baseball pitcher. I mean, it's like someone took out my heart and stamped on it a few times. They said the stories simply weren't a good fit, but was that really the case?

Or did I simply write a bad story?

For all those interested in seeing them, I've posted them on my Fiction Press page.

The Responsibilities of a Witch is a coming of age story about a young girl chosen to become the next Witch of the Woods. She has to adapt to the responsibilities thrust upon her, whether she wanted them or not.

Flash & Shadows is a superhero story about a young man who has powers more suited for villains that heroes, and in a world where superpowers are slowly becoming a thing, he's faced with that burden in knowing his powers would label him as a villain despite how much he'd wish otherwise.

Nox-Cruor is finished!

I finally finished my latest novel, Nox-Cruor.
Nox-Cruor by R. Kain

It took months to do research and write, but I believe it to be my masterpiece at the moment. I hope it reaches a wide audience.

Summary: All things in life require sacrifice, nothing more so than magic. What are you willing to give up to save the person you love?

Being the last of a line of theurgists, Nikolas Jasper broke up with his girlfriend in order to protect her. There was a bogeyman that stalked his bloodline, and it killed not only his parents, but those of his sister-figure as well when they tried to stop it. However, it was meaningless in the end.

The Schwarzert came back after only a year and poisoned her with blood containing the essence of an ancient race of vampires. The only hope of saving her before it steals her humanity away is to find a cure within the Amaranth Vault, a place filled with magical artifacts taken from the world over. The only catch is that the location died with Lorene’s father, and the Schwarzert is still coming after him.

Why is the Schwarzert after him so soon? Can they find a cure while dealing with it? Or will Nikolas lose someone else he cares dearly about?

One thing is certain—sacrifices will be made, and what is lost will never be regained.

Nox-Cruor is a personal tale told from the perspective of three young adults struggling against a magical force that they barely comprehend. They aren’t trying to save the whole world, but deal with keeping the people closest to them safe with the resources they have on-hand. Set in contemporary times, this story will draw you into a world of magic and mystery like you’ve never seen before.

Introduction

My name is R.Kain or R.K for short here, and this is my first post on Goodread's Blog.

I figured that I should start by introducing myself and my work. I'm... 26 as of a few days ago, but I've been writing for a few years now. My work, in a way, chronicles how far I've come as a writer, leaving a trail marking how I've improved so far. Most of my stories are centered around Fantasy stories because those are the ones I enjoy the most, with some of my favorites being:

Necromancer Chronicles:

The Drowning City (The Necromancer Chronicles, #1) by Amanda DownumThe Bone Palace (The Necromancer Chronicles, #2) by Amanda DownumKingdoms of Dust (The Necromancer Chronicles, #3) by Amanda Downum

Dresden Files:

Changes (The Dresden Files, #12) by Jim ButcherGhost Story (The Dresden Files, #13) by Jim ButcherCold Days (The Dresden Files, #14) by Jim ButcherSkin Game (The Dresden Files, #15) by Jim Butcher

Wildbow's Works:

Pact by WildbowWorm by Wildbow

On the topic of my works, I'm fondest of the Arcane Advent and Wands & Vials series, and I plan on revamping my website to work on those more, with the exception being a new story I have in the works as a stand-alone Urban Fantasy story for YA and above readers.

And that's about it for me.
