He’s not purposely a bastard you know. He tries to diffuse difficult situations with humour but humour is a bit alien to him (at least humour as most people see it).
This is so important. Sherlock is rarely DELIBERATELY an asshole. He IS an asshole sometimes, but it’s nearly always misplaced (or temporarily forgotten) lack of social skills. He isn’t malicious or cruel.
