i like to think about mary not giving a flying fuck how much she hurt john
![]()
Actually, this is a point we almost never see made:
Mary DESTROYED John. She broke him, KNOWING what losing Sherlock would do to him; knowing that John had serious trust issues and PTSD; all to safeguard the house of cards she’d built that was her fake life with John.
She didn’t give a damn what her actions did to John as long as she got to “keep” him.
To KEEP John. Not to love him. Not to cherish him as an equal partner.
Their relationship was never equal because she had all the power. She had the means to destroy John, utterly. She lied to him from day 1 of their relationship, thereby taking away John’s ability to choose for himself.
That’s not love; that’s about control, and obsession, and narcissism.
Yes! This is exactly what I’ve always been trying to convince my friends of. John is just an object to Mary, a prize to be won. I think that there MAY be a bit of love there, but I think it’s so broken and twisted and based solely on infatuation – that blissful feeling people have in a whirlwind romance. Everything LITERALLY WENT TO SHIT after the honeymoon period.
Thing is though, is that I think Mary and John’s entire relationship is based on John feeling like shit and her being in control of John’s emotions. She literally was happier with him when all his focus was on her - when she was trying to “fix” John. As soon as Sherlock returned, that’s when she was starting to get a bit vindictive. I mean, looking back, knowing who Mary is now, I see hints of it EVERYWHERE in TEH and TSo3, most of all with her interactions with Sherlock directly… It’s all her basically trying to convince Sherlock that he really doesn’t have a place anymore in John’s life, trying to wriggle her way between the two. No wonder Sherlock was so shocked in TSo3 at John’s “best friend” admission.
Totally off topic, sort of, I have a feeling there were a lot more interactions off-camera between Sherlock and Mary than John probably even knows… After all, they spent all of their wedding planning time at Baker St. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the blinky-blink scene, but Sherlock KNOWS John’s friends don’t like him (as stated in MHR), and knows John didn’t really spend much time with anyone but him… And despite John’s animosity towards Sherlock for the better part of TEH, Sherlock knows John was always his friend. So this leaves me to believe perhaps Mary may have been passive aggressively planting little bits in his head (like at the wedding, “We weren’t the first!” [[implying that she’s saying “but I still am the last, hah hah!!”]] which, as an aside, was REALLY cruel of her, ESPECIALLY since she knew the turmoil Sherlock was going through) to make Sherlock believe John.
But anyway, back to Mary’s need for control, having Sherlock gone re-instates her control over John. Killing Sherlock will put her back onto that glorious pedestal that she thinks she’s on. I’m sure she was on the fucking moon when she learned Sherlock was being exiled indefinitely.
Mmm, and back to my point in the first paragraph that John is just an object to be won: This moment RIGHT here convinces me of this:

Like, she goes right to John and GRABBY-HANDS HIS ARM. BACK IN CONTROL. JOHN’S MINE. And SHERLOCK KNOWS SHE DOES IT ON PURPOSE. LOOK AT HIS FACE as he turns away. I can’t tell if that’s an eyeroll or just a blinky-blink, but seriously. The man is fucking going to his death. Was that REALLY necessary to dig the knife further into Sherlock’s heart?
Hmm. But I just noticed… what’s with John’s little nod there? It’s not to Mary, but to Sherlock. I’m sure it’s nothing. Just I never noticed the nod before I giffed this.
God, I LOVE Mary so much, and I LOVE dissecting her character / relationships, and I am so excited for the next season.
I JUST REALLY FUCKING HATE MARY
^Seconding that last. I really fucking hate Mary.
