Okay, but I finally finished this fic (AFTER doing the thing I needed to do, yes, thank you for keeping me honest, everyone) and now I have to spill feelings all over tumblr.
It. Was. Incredible.
Four things I don’t normally read (and actively avoid, usually) when it comes to Sherlock fanfic:
Really in-depth
case fic
First-person POV
Spy/thriller 007-type stuff (not my taste in general, either)
Stuff that deals with the post-Reichenbach in-between time and the immediate aftermathAND YET. If you read through just a few of the comments on the last chapter, you’ll quickly see the sheer number of people saying “I don’t normally like this sort of thing, but WOW.” Believe those folks. Believe ME. Even if it’s not your thing, try it.
Here’s what you’re in for (because I know you’re going to go check it out after this ringing endorsement):
There are umpteen-thousand fics out there that tackle post-Reichenbach from John’s perspective, and they’re fantastic, and yes, John was horribly hurt by Sherlock’s apparent suicide etc. etc. etc. It’s so rare to see Sherlock’s point of view instead. This story picks up at the very end of his time away, with only one last cell in Moriarty’s network to take out. The deep first-person pining Sherlock POV sucked me in immediately, was so spot-on. Give it a shot. You’ll be surprised.
This story will make you feel like a world traveler. The settings are thoroughly researched to the point of complete accuracy and feel utterly immersive. I feel like I’ve been to Berlin, Hamburg, Yemen, and a dozen other places over the past three days of reading this fic. The plot takes Sherlock (and eventually John) all over the Middle East and Europe, through fancy hotels and abandoned houses, through chilly early spring and into the hot desert sun. And that plot, yesss, and the original characters that go with it, yesss. I’ve never before been all that interested in how Sherlock did what he did during his time away (because again, not into all the spy stuff much), but this… it’s what Sherlock had to go through, the things he was forced to do, the toll it took on him, and how much he desperately missed John the whole time.
Oh, and don’t go thinking there isn’t a lot of John in this story. The first few chapters are John-free (in body, though never in mind) while Sherlock gets himself in horrible trouble and ends up back in London, but after that the Johnlock goes from 0-60 in no time. If you’re exhausted by having to deal with all the post-S3 Mary stuff,
you’ll find this refreshing, as this story was finished immediately
before S3 aired. She’s there as a complicating factor in the background,
but you don’t have to tangle with all the assassin wife stuff. And of course, there’s plenty of fantastically hot, emotional Johnlock sex throughout.So here you go. Against the Rest of the World by @silentauroriamthereal. 152k, rated E. Read it.

Look at that shirt. Its magnetic powers are literally drawing John helplessly toward it. He manfully tries to resist it when Sherlock is looking right at him but you can see the struggle in his eyes. Such is the power of the purple shirt of sex.
