Rules:  tag (10) people you want to get to know better.

The lovely @simpleanddestructivechemistry tagged me in this. I think I just did one very similar recently, so apologies if this bores you.

Birthday: Capricorn, like my beloved Sherlock.

Eye colour:  Green. Sometimes blue, depending on my mood. Blue when I cry. Green when I’m happy.

Hair colour: Dark blond. Lighter in summer, darker in winter.

Relationship status: I’d take one if someone offered. A good someone, that is.

Siblings:  One younger brother. We have a Mycroft/Sherlock type relationship, except he’s Mycroft and not quite as smart. He has embraced a life of working for The Man and being Establishment and as vanilla as humanly possible and thinks that I’m an idiot for having chosen kind of anything but that. First I went into theology, then opera singing, spent years and years in school and then travelling and moving around all the time because of the opera career, etc, then moved to a city where everyone speaks French and became an ESL prof. I have no husband, kids, property, car, savings, RRSPs, etc. He disapproves hard. He has all of those things (wife, not husband, plus 1.5 children and a dog) and doesn’t appear to be super happy, but as far as he’s concerned, he’s checked off all the boxes of Becoming An Adult, and I have not, so I’m a failure in his eyes. Never mind any of my own rather significant accomplishments, which we don’t need to get into, but he doesn’t recognise those. We have, shall we say, a difficult relationship.

Pets: My parents have a dog that I still refer to as “my dog” although he lives in a different city. I love him so much it hurts and when he dies it will tear me apart. Let’s not talk about it. He is a black, smooth-haired miniature dachshund (a wiener dog!) and the cutest beast on the planet. I could never get another dog while he’s still around. He would know I had cheated, and besides my heart is unwaveringly his.

Wake Up Times: By choice or by necessity? By necessity, around 6am for 8am classes or 7am for 9am classes. These days I teach at 8am on Mondays and Wednesdays and 9am the other days. By choice, not before noon. I’m a night owl.

Lemonade or Sweet Tea: Tea. Why are those the only choices? Why not sweet tea vs non-sweet tea? (Am I back in Georgia?)

Cats or dogs: Dogs.

Coke or Pepsi: Coke zero or diet Pepsi.

Text or Call: I prefer to text.

Met a Celebrity: Well, this doesn’t count because I didn’t actually meet them, but I found out that Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones were at the Mozart Requiem that I was the soprano soloist for last month! Michael emailed the concert organisers after to congratulate us on it! Apart from that, my best celebrity story is that Stephen Colbert sang and danced at my personal request one time when I was in the audience at the Colbert Report. :)

Chapstick or Lipstick: Both. Why choose?

Last Song I Listened To: Probably something by Imagine Dragons. That, or something from the Rachmaninoff Vespers, as I’m planning music for the year for the choir that I conduct. :)

Tagging: @practicefortheheart, @the-7-percent-solution, @cricketcat9, @usako90, @savage-pineapples, @mianmaru, @khorazir, @wtgilsa, @mphelmsman9, and @allonsy-sk. Based on recent activity, as usual. :) Only if you feel like it.

Hi. As you might have noticed or not, I am slowly but gradually reading my way through your fics over on AO3. I really like your style and content. I need a hint, though... How do you manage to be so productive? I've seen the dates of publishing and I had

Hey, you nice thing, you! This is really nice! Thanks about my style, content, etc. I don’t think I’m particularly gifted at handling real life, though, haha! At least, no better than average. All I am is really, weirdly fast, and really, weirdly prolific. I don’t know why it’s like that; it just always has been like that. If I average it out over the years, I turn out around 11,000-12,000 words per week. Sometimes I go for a week or two without writing at all, but then other times, it’s genuinely insane - I think my record is something like 60,000 words over three days. Those little spates just come around every now and then. I still get up, go to work, etc, but I drop everything else and do nothing but write. I forget to eat, I don’t sleep very much (or at all); I just write until whatever I’m writing is finished. It honestly freaks me out a little bit, but that’s just how I’m wired, I guess.

I think part of it is that some part of my brain is always writing. Either it’s the story I’m working on or else it’s the next thing. I see the scenes playing out in my head like movies and then I sit down and try to capture it exactly as I saw it. Some of my favourite comments are actually when people say that they saw the story playing out like a movie while they were reading and then I think, oh good, I managed to transcribe it, then! But I think it’s that mental pre-writing that makes it so much shorter, possibly? I don’t do drafts at all - or rather, I think I do that part in my head. Once it’s written, it’s finalised, with the exception of typos and missing words (MOST of which I usually catch in edits, haha, though not always!). Basically, I never sit down to a blank page with the hope that inspiration will come. The thing I need to write is always already there - I just have to deal with real life obligations around it, you know?

It’s definitely freakish, though. I was in a writers’ circle for a bit and would get so bored because it seemed like all they wanted to talk about was what to do about writers’ block. I sort of think that we shouldn’t write because we want to have written something - we should write when there’s a story bursting its way out of our heads (and fingers?), because then it just goes on its own, you know? That said… I do think it’s unusual. I don’t mean to make that sound like a talent or some special thing that I’ve somehow achieved. I think it’s sort of like your height - it just is what it is, and if a person is seven feet tall, it’s not so much a personal accomplishment as it is something a bit odd. I’m a bit odd, is what I’m trying to say. Lol.

When I’m in those crazy writing spates, though, I will say that my dishes don’t get washed, I don’t sleep anywhere near enough, I’m probably a little under-prepared for the classes I teach, and sleepy on the job on top of it, so really - don’t credit me for life skillz!! :P We just do what our muses command, yeah?

All the very best with your own writing! :)

Hey, I'm trying to promote my original writings, but it's going literally no where and it's really discouraging me because this happens every time I try to put myself and my writing out there. Do you have any wisdom to share?

I’m not familiar with the best way to promote writing. Only because I don’t write all that often, I make art, which I am lead to believe is another monster altogether.

That said, if any writers in fandom have some advice for anon, please share! I would ask @silentauroriamthereal because they’re particularly prolific and/or @the-pen-pot because of fandom longevity and iconic fics in multiple genres.
