Self-repost time, if you’ll indulge me yet again with my “hey, a lot of us are stuck inside and we’ve now exhausted everything on everything streaming service ever, so… want a random suggestion of a fic to read or re-read?” thing?
In the summer of 2016, I had a financial catastrophe due to the language school I was teaching at being suddenly bought by another, far worse language school run by evil, evil beings. The short version is that they very suddenly cut the hours of all the staff they took on from my language school to almost nothing, and also let us know as an afterthought that they only pay once per month, and not until the end of the month AFTER the month when you’ve done the work. Aka, for all of your (pitiful) hours in July, you don’t don’t paid until close to the end of August. Summer hours were already super sparse, but my colleagues and I were suddenly cut down to around 6 hours per week, which obviously no one can live on. I had just gone through a disastrous apartment flooding at my old place (slumlord landlord) and moved out as soon as my lease was up. The rent was almost the same, but I had to buy appliances (fridge, stove, washer, dryer) because that’s how that sort of thing works in Québec apartments, so I had just spent six months’ worth of feeble savings on super used, very old appliances. I had just moved when I found this out - my new lease started on July 1st that year. I had no choice about any of it and no notice of the very sudden sale of my language school. It was so scary.
This fandom is what saved me. I stood a high chance of becoming homeless because of this. As a part-time, contract-only language instructor (ESL for adult French speakers), I had no job protection, and never made enough to save anything - it was always touch-and-go to see whether I would be able to pay next month’s rent. This thing? Ruined me. I didn’t know what to do and couldn’t stop crying. I finally made a tiny, cringing little post on here - I hate asking for help, especially financial help, and to this day even remembering this in passing brings tears to my eyes. You guys saved me. Whether it was a one-time PayPal donation or your ongoing support through my Patreon (ugh, but: x), both the physical gesture of literal support as well as the immeasurable gesture of solidarity and human support, I cried for sheer gratitude and amazement. Your donations that month were my lifeblood and I will never stop being grateful. This light-hearted little story was the smallest expression of my gratitude and love, which you will always, always have. Love you guys, hope you’re all doing well and surviving in turn through this scary, weird, uncertain time we’re living in right now.

Rule #2
Don’t ever hug a lobster when you see one on the street,
For decorum is essential when a lobster you must greet.
You may comment on the weather, compliment his choice of hat,
But crustaceans like their space if one should stop them for a chat.
Don’t ever hug a lobster when you’re strolling down the coast,
Simply nod and give a greeting, or a handshake at the most,
For a lobster’s first priority is formal social graces,
And one seemes over-familiar if a lobster one embraces.
Don’t ever hug a lobster when you meet one in the sea,
For a lobster’s spines and chitin make it difficult, you see,
And he might become self-conscious if you bring that fact to light,
So don’t ever hug a lobster, simply put, it’s impolite.

I feel like I wouldn’t be surprised to crack open a book of Shel Silverstein poems and see this accompanied by a fanciful illustration of a well-dressed lobster practicing social distancing.

Apparently it’s a lie in bed and cry kind of evening.
Reblogging to add: I went grocery shopping and now I feel better, lol. As anxiety-inducing as going in a grocery store is these days, I also love grocery shopping. So there’s that. :P
Apparently it’s a lie in bed and cry kind of evening.
