Kylah shut Ted’s den door. She couldn’t bear to look at the spot where he gasped his last breath. His presence, an imposing force, lingered. So did his scent, a blend of tobacco, pine aftershave and manly sweat. Each reminder ripped into her heart like a knife. Especially now with the funeral looming ahead, the eulogies, the mournful organ hymns, the tolling bells . . .

These ceremonies should bring closure, but they’d only prolong the agony of her grief. She wanted to remember him alive for a while longer, wishing she could delay these morbid customs until the hurt subsided.

Throughout the house, his essence echoed his personality: the wine stain on the carpet, the heap of dirty shirts, shorts and socks piled up in the laundry room, the spattered stove, his fingerprints on the microwave. “I’ll find that murderer, Teddy,” she promised him over and over, wandering from room to empty room, traces of him lurking in every corner. “I’ll do everything in my power to make sure justice is served. Another past life regression isn’t enough anymore. I know what I have to do now. And I promise, it will never, ever happen again—in any future life.”

She inhaled deeply and breathed him in. “Go take a shower, Teddy.” She chuckled through her tears as the doorbell rang. She cringed, breaking out in cold sweat when she saw the black sedan at the curb.

“Not again.” No sense in hiding, so she let the detectives in.

“Mrs. McKinley, we need your permission to do a search and take some of your husband’s possessions from the house,” Nolan said.

“What for?” She met his steely stare. “I looked everywhere and found nothing.”

“Mrs. McKinley, the cupboard door was open, four jars of herbs are missing, and the autopsy showed he died of herb poisoning. Those herbs,” Nolan added for emphasis, as if it had slipped her feeble mind. “Foxglove, mandrake, hemlock—and an as-yet unidentified one,” he read from a notebook. “The M.E. determined it was a lethal dose.”

Sherlock Holmes got nothin’ on him, she thought.

“Where’s this cupboard, ma’am?” Egan spoke up.

“Right there.” She pointed, its door gaping exactly the way she’d found it that night. Nolan went over to it and peered inside.

“Ma’am, it would be better if you left the house for a half hour or so. Please leave a number where you can be reached,” Egan ordered.

Nolan glanced down the hall. “Where is your bedroom?”

What could they want in the bedroom? “It’s at the top of the stairs on the right. But we didn’t sleep together,” she offered, as if that would faze them. It didn’t.

After giving him her cell number, she got into her car and drove to the beach.

An hour later, she let herself back in and looked around. They’d taken the computer, her case of CDs, her thumb drive, her remaining herb jars, Ted’s notebooks, and left her alone with one horrible fact: This was now a homicide case and she was the prime suspect.

Ellie moaned aloud as the edges of her dream faded away at the sound of light knocking on her front door.  She threw an arm over her eyes and ignored whoever wanted her attention so early on a Saturday morning.
She wanted the vivid dream to continue, where Lucian took his time running his hands over her body as he kissed her breathless.  Her body felt like a raw nerve exposed as she squirmed on the sheets of her queen-sized bed.  She tried to hold onto the images for a while longer.
Another knock came, louder this time, and her dream faded into blackness.  Her eyes popped open, and she turned her head to glance at her alarm clock.
She growled and whipped the blankets aside.  As she sat up and rubbed the sleep out of her eyes, she wondered whether she could ignore the intrusion.  But her mind reached for all the possibilities of catastrophe that could have happened last night after her friends headed home, and she rushed to the door, fumbling with the locks.  Another knock jolted her as she tried to get her fingers to respond to her brain’s command to open the door.
“Hold on a minute,” she grumbled.
A triumphant smile broke across her face as she unlocked the fourth, and final, lock.  As she opened the door, she wondered whether she was still dreaming, because on the other side of her door stood Lucian.
“Holy crap, I’m still dreaming,” she mumbled.
His eyes crinkled in amusement; when he smiled at her, her breath hitched in her throat.  She clenched her fists to stop herself from reaching for him and rolled her shoulders instead.  Several moments later, she was relaxed and drew a few deep breaths as her eyes wandered over him.
He was dressed in jeans and a sweater; a white collar of a dress shirt peeked up from his neck.  Even in casual clothes, he looked extraordinary.
“No, love, not a dream.”
She gazed down as the aroma of coffee assailed her, and smiled when she spotted the handles of the bag in his hand.  She opened her mouth to ask him what was in the bag, but a strangled sound came from his throat.  She noticed that his eyes widened and traveled down her body, taking his time, but when he realized the front door was wide open for all to see in, his mouth drew into a straight line and his face was a mask of anger.
When he lifted his head and glanced at her, his moss-green eyes flared to life.  She could have sworn she heard a growl erupt from deep in his chest.  Before she could figure out why, he stalked toward her as she scrambled back into her apartment.  She stopped a few feet away from the door, and watched him in surprise as he slammed the door and locked it before he set the bag and coffee on the side table by the door.
“Why are you mad at me?” she asked.
“What are you wearing?” he growled.
She looked down at herself and blushed.  When she went to bed the night before, she had on a pair of pajama bottoms along with the white tank top she was wearing.  Sometime in the middle of the night, she must have shed the bottoms, because she stood in front of Lucian in a pair of boy shorts and a tank top that left little to the imagination.
Her head jerked up at the sound of his loud steps on her hardwood floor.  Her first reaction was to back away from him, but as her mind replayed the conversation with her friends last night, and remembered the vivid dreams that she had awoken from, she tensed her body and waited to see what he would do.  When he reached her, his hands cupped her shoulders and squeezed for a moment before he rubbed his hands up and down her arms.
“I won’t hurt you, love.  You surprised me when you answered the door wearing practically nothing.”  His growl was back.

       The frightened female had mashed herself to his body and no matter how hard Tarzan tried, he hadn’t dislodged her. Like an infant gorilla, she’d ended up clinging to the front of his body.
A fact that hadn’t gone unnoticed by his mating tool.
Her arms wrapped behind his neck while her ankles locked above his butt. Her light colored hair separated into sections and blew a strand across her mouth. He wondered if her hair, so different from his own, would feel as soft as it looked. A lock fluttered in the breeze, then wedged in the seam of her lips. He imagined the same sunshine-filled locks dragging up his thighs to caress between his legs.
Caught like a willing rabbit in her snare, Tarzan froze as desire flared in a burst of hot pulsing need. Beneath the protection of his animal skin cover, his male part rose as it grew in size and width. Soon, his tool would make its demands known.
“You have amazing eyes.” The female’s thighs loosened their grip and her breasts slid down his chest.
Closer…closer.
“And your muscles...you’re so strong.”

Whatever she’d said, Tarzan wanted to hear more. The sound of her soft voice stirred a thrumming sensation inside him.

Swept up into the sea of travelers at the airport, she focused her attention back to the present as she followed the human current through check-in and security gates. A sickening wave of nausea rose in her throat as clammy beads of sweat trickled down her face. What the hell am I doing? Get up. Get off the plane now. It’s not too late, go!

Dizzy with indecision, she reached for the buckle on her seatbelt as her alternate conscience spoke up. No, stay. Do I really want to go back to my cramped little studio and spend more time alone? Her fingers released the grip on her seatbelt and she closed her eyes, deliberately trying to relax the tense wires in every fiber of her body.

Uneasy thoughts lingered after her internal schizophrenic conversation and she tried to leave all doubts behind as the plane ascended. Finding it impossible to concentrate on reading, she tried to distract herself by striking up a conversation with the unlucky soul sitting next to her.

“Have you ever been to Montana?”

“Oh yes, my sister lives there and I try to visit her every few years. How about you?”

“No, I’ve never been. This’s my first time and I’m nervous,” Jamie admitted.

“It’s pretty enough, but it’s rough country. I couldn’t live there. What brings you?”

Well, I finally got enough backbone to break up with my abusive, criminal boyfriend Derrick three months ago, and then my best friend and only ally, Noah, left on tour. I have NO family since my father died an agonizing death from lung cancer ten years ago, resulting in my mother becoming depressed and committing suicide two years later. I was pathetic enough to attach myself to one of my patients and become a helpless spectator as death cruelly consumed him. Only days after his death, my only surviving relative and second mother died, leaving me a 31-year-old orphan. So you see, I’m a loser and terribly lonely. So when this man I’ve never met in person asked me to join him on an intriguing escape across the country, I accepted.

That was the whole enchilada she wanted to spew out to the sweet, unsuspecting gray-haired matron in seat 21A. Instead she answered succinctly, “Just visiting a friend.”

The first time I walked into the café and saw her sitting there, she was reading in Braille. Her delicate fingers quickly skimmed over the pages; she’s a fast reader. At times, she would come to a humorous part of the story and grin. Once, she laughed. It was a charming giggle and now having heard it, I want to hear it again.

So, what started out as a daily need for a double espresso macchiato was soon replaced by my desire to see her. Sitting across the room, pretending to read a newspaper, or file notes when I have them, I watch her. She recognizes her guide dog periodically, or stops to feel the rays of sun shining on her face that beam through the window. My favorite is when she listens in on someone's conversation.

What really surprised me was my reaction when a longhaired college student-type approached her one morning. Protectively, I tensed up, but her dog immediately became alert and growled at the intruder. It made me chuckle when it scared the guy so bad that he left in a hurry. I got a kick out of the smirk she had on her face as she rewarded her dog with some love.

Today, however, she’s facing the window and looking up toward the sun, smiling. Running my hands through my hair, I force my eyes away from her.

Today's the day, I repeat to myself. Today I’m going to speak to her.

Opening the door, I glance over at her and her head slowly turns in my direction. She also takes a slow, deep inhaling breath.

"Hello, Dr. Davis, the usual?" Myra asks, causing me to jump at the sudden sound of her voice.

"Good morning, Myra. Yes, please, the usual," I reply looking behind me, afraid she’ll leave before I get the nerve to say something to her.

This is it, Davis, time to man up.

Not even Dan.” Nor her father, nor his parents, nor the men who worked for him. “But you need to know I’m truly in love with you. Sounds sweet doesn’t it? But does he actually mean it? Or is he creating a situation to use to his advantage in the future? At the end of Book 2, he truly seems to love Tess. But does Steel even know how to love? Yes, he’s very happy to have Tess working for him, but then she is doing the work he was hired to do, plus she is creating the work plans that are required by the state.
