BOOK REVIEW AND 99¢ SALE ALERT : Okay, so I’ve been waiting to...

BOOK REVIEW AND 99¢ SALE ALERT : Okay, so I’ve been waiting to review this book because I knew the author my friend, Debra Dunbar* was putting it on sale and wanted to get my followers the best deal possible–although frankly, it is worth the usual $3.99 it generally sells for.

I loved this whole series. I actually got sucked into it by reading her standalone book Three Wishes because it is an urban fantasy based in Chicago, and you know, I’m from Chicago. Anyway, Three Wishes was charming (the love interest is a RAT demon! How can you beat that? How can you?) and I was hooked. I went and grabbed Demon Bound and then seven days and seven books later managed to crawl out of my book cocoon and (mostly) re-enter the real world.

What I love about Demon Bound and the whole series:

There are “angels” but they aren’t always “good” and “demons” who aren’t always “evil” (Though the demons are much more evil than my Loki, even the heroine, though she changes through the novels. Demon Bound is pretty tame, but Sam does some horrible things in later books. Be forewarned.)

It really pulls heavily from agnostic lore. Seriously, the big ol’ angel-demon battle is in here. And I like how heaven is portrayed as a place where beings exist as energy, and Hell is almost its exact opposite, everything there is sort of intensely in the flesh.

Humans aren’t helpless nitwits. Humans are actually responsible for beginning the reformation of Sam, the heroine of the story (an Imp and lesser Demon). They also successfully kill lots of demons with guns. Big guns. And large motor vehicles.

The series is funny, but it is also deep. A lot about “good” and “evil” and the nature of humanity in the story even though the main characters are a demon, and later an angel.

Action. Adventure. Romance.

Wyatt.**Anyway, you can pick up the first in the series at your fave retailer for only 99¢. DO IT. DO IT NOW!

*We may not actually be friends. I may in fact be a crazy fan who is STALKING her asking her, “So how is that book Kingdom of Lies coming? Huh? Huh?” a bit too frequently, but I can’t help myself.

**Direct Ascension into heaven Ms. Dunbar, seriously, he deserves it.

do you ever look around at the big crowds of people around you and realize everyone has a story and memories and family and troubles and achievements and a first kiss and a broken heart but you’ll never know any of it and every human life is really intricate and expansive but oh they’ve walked into a shop and you’ll never see them again and you’ll never know just what they were thinking

I think about this a lot

There’s a word for this:

My step-father, James Evans died Saturday night, June 13th at...

My step-father, James Evans died Saturday night, June 13th at the age of 85. He died very quickly of an apparent heart attack in his home.

I don’t normally post personal things on my blog, but my dad is the type of human being everyone should know. I only make the distinction of “step-father” because I have friends who are step parents or adoptive parents; I know it can be a hard road when you take on children who are grieving a parent or parents that they’ve lost. I know because at times I didn’t make that road easy for my dad. But in the end, Jim is my real father in every way that matters, and I love him very much; he will always be with me.

We often joked that Dad learned his parenting skills in Marines Corps Boot Camp; but still (or maybe because), he did great. Besides insisting that we pick up that book/shoe/toy/science project/dead worm RIGHT NOW he instilled in my brothers, sisters, and me a love of learning, an expectation that we would treat all people with kindness and respect, and stressed that we be open to other cultures. Most importantly, he never scoffed at any of our childhood dreams. The only condition he gave was, “Work hard and be ready to support yourself doing other things. But most of all, work hard.” For that advice, and introducing me to fantasy/sci-fi through the child-friendly gateway drug of comic books, he’s probably most to blame for my becoming an author … It’s something I can never thank him for enough.

Dad’s death was not entirely unexpected. He had been ailing, and was facing the prospect of lifelong dialysis which he really didn’t want–and a heart operation he wanted less. Both would have gotten in the way of hanging out on the couch with his cat and reading books–the dialysis because of the time it would cost him, and the surgery because at his age, there was a high risk of dementia and/or delirium.

I am so lucky because he got to be himself up until the very end. We went to see Age of Ultron together last month, and we were still exchanging books and comics this past week. Last weekend I messed up and forgot to take him the last two volumes of Saga. They’re sitting on my nightstand and I cry every time I look at them or even think about them. I’m not sure who I’ll be going to see Marvel movies with anymore, or the next Star Wars movie, either.

I miss him already, but I know my mom will be missing him more. She’s the one who will be reminded every day that he isn’t there.

I’m so glad we got to see one last movie together, that I went to see him the week before, and that we talked on the phone the night before he died. There were no unsaid words between us. He knew that I was so glad he was my father, and that I loved him. That is a great comfort.

It was too soon to lose him, but to have known him at all, and to have him as my father makes me feel blessed.

imagine the silent stress building in Asgard every April Fool’s Day as everyone wonders what Loki will do this year.

imagine heimdall complaning to odin about this, but only receiving a can of peanut brittle as a consolation gift.

I imagine Loki just does nothing and everyone’s paranoid. Just how he likes it.

How did you find this Tumblr?

Did you find it from a post that caught your fancy? Did you find it from a link on kboards? From my original fiction? From my fanfiction?

… and what stuffs do you want more of?

Your original fiction… I kinda tumblr stalked you after I read I Bring the Fire.  Tumblr was the place that you had all your updates and told everyone when your next book was releasing so I followed because I didn’t want to miss anything…

Sorry if that came off as creepy and weird.

It’s not creepy or weird. If you knew where I lived …
