The Bookbub promo of my free e-book I Bring the Fire Part I has...

The Bookbub promo of my free e-book I Bring the Fire Part I has already paid for itself with sales of parts II & III. Above are the stats from from about 8 a.m. before the promo started, and now.

I’m not sure why some people paid for the book—it should be free on all sites, but perhaps Amazon had an internal glitch? As you can see, 2 of those 3 people returned it. (To all 3 people, I am so sorry you had such difficulty).

Anyway, for those who follow such things—Bookbub works.

I Bring the Fire: Part I by C. Gockel – BookBub Deals:

cgockel:

My Bookbub promotion just started. Yay!

Ugh! I must resist the urge to check Kindle downloads every five minutes, but so far, over 800 downloads…and they haven’t even posted the book to their facebook page or sent out an email…it’s just on the daily deals section of their site.

UPDATE: 2,000+ downloads in 2 hours. But Amazon hasn’t updated their rankings yet. Arrrggghhhh!

First Paid Advertisement...Coming this Week

August 14th I’ll be advertising I Bring the Fire Wolves on Bookbub. It’s a paid spot, so it’s not a huge honor (although they only accept always free ebooks on a limited basis, so that is something).

The Problem with Offering Free Books

I’ve run into some trouble advertising my free book—namely, that the Amazon has stopped paying affiliate fees for referrals to free books. (Can’t blame ‘em for that—they have to make money). But it means that some advertisers, even paid ones, no longer want to promote free books because their revenue model relies on both fees from authors and fees from the affiliate program.

Bookbub…it Looks Good
Bookbub does free promos, and prices for advertising free books is less than it is for paid books. I’m paying $90 for exposure to a list of about 240k FANTASY fans. I can’t stress how important that it is a list of fantasy fans. Targeted advertising rocks. (By contrast Book Daily offers a $49/mo subscription service that only reaches 25K people and isn’t targeted).

Bookbub says I can expect anywhere from 2,900 to 11,800 downloads, I’ll let you know how it goes.

I’ve Spent the Last Week or So Getting Ready for the Big Push.
Getting Chaos posted on Goodreads, updating my profile there, trying to get the first three books of the series on all vendors sites, setting up a Facebook page, etc.

I’m so nervous…it’s like prom…except I skipped prom and used the money I would have spent for that on plane ticket to Japan, so I’m not really sure if the comparison is apt. But, yes, I’m so nervous and excited.

One More Closing Thought
Sheesh…I should write mysteries. Look at how many subscribers Bookbub has interested in those. Heck, and then maybe my mother-in-law would read my work!

Hmmm…and the next most popular category is “Historical and Contemporary Romance”. I should write a mystery romance! Actually, that sounds like fun.

(Ooooo…I could write a mystery/romance in the Fire ‘verse after Part VI is done. Heh. With new characters and cameos from familiar ones.)

Thank You!

For your review of Chaos on Amazon. I really appreciate it!

And thank you Argopelter for your magnificent review of Chaos on Goodreads. I’ve been working on a novella that takes place right before Part IV, and your criticisms are definitely going to help me make it better.

(I HAVE started Part IV BTW, and it’s super fun, but I always need a little angst to balance the fun. The novella qualifies.)

Tips for Successful Writing

If feedback from your betas doesn’t prompt scores of rewrites and occasionally make you cry, they aren’t being hard enough on you.

“Fan fiction is what literature might look like if it were reinvented from scratch after a nuclear apocalypse by a band of brilliant pop-culture junkies trapped in a sealed bunker. They don’t do it for money. That’s not what it’s about. The writers write it and put it up online just for the satisfaction. They’re fans, but they’re not silent, couchbound consumers of media. The culture talks to them, and they talk back to the culture in its own language.”

The Boy Who Lived Forever | Time Magazine (via gypsy-sunday)

This is probably the best, non-judgmental description of fan fiction I’ve ever heard of in main stream media.

It’s Ragatoskr! I think he may have to make an appearance in Part IV of I Bring the Fire.
