BOOK REVIEW AND 99¢ SALE ALERT : Okay, so I’ve been waiting to review this book because I knew the author my friend, Debra Dunbar* was putting it on sale and wanted to get my followers the best deal possible–although frankly, it is worth the usual $3.99 it generally sells for.

I loved this whole series. I actually got sucked into it by reading her standalone book Three Wishes because it is an urban fantasy based in Chicago, and you know, I’m from Chicago. Anyway, Three Wishes was charming (the love interest is a RAT demon! How can you beat that? How can you?) and I was hooked. I went and grabbed Demon Bound and then seven days and seven books later managed to crawl out of my book cocoon and (mostly) re-enter the real world.

What I love about Demon Bound and the whole series:

There are “angels” but they aren’t always “good” and “demons” who aren’t always “evil” (Though the demons are much more evil than my Loki, even the heroine, though she changes through the novels. Demon Bound is pretty tame, but Sam does some horrible things in later books. Be forewarned.)

It really pulls heavily from agnostic lore. Seriously, the big ol’ angel-demon battle is in here. And I like how heaven is portrayed as a place where beings exist as energy, and Hell is almost its exact opposite, everything there is sort of intensely in the flesh.

Humans aren’t helpless nitwits. Humans are actually responsible for beginning the reformation of Sam, the heroine of the story (an Imp and lesser Demon). They also successfully kill lots of demons with guns. Big guns. And large motor vehicles.

The series is funny, but it is also deep. A lot about “good” and “evil” and the nature of humanity in the story even though the main characters are a demon, and later an angel.

Action. Adventure. Romance.

*We may not actually be friends. I may in fact be a crazy fan who is STALKING her asking her, “So how is that book Kingdom of Lies coming? Huh? Huh?” a bit too frequently, but I can’t help myself.

**Direct Ascension into heaven Ms. Dunbar, seriously, he deserves it.
