BOOKS ‘n COZY SPOTS BOOK REVIEWS – Ravenous by R.G. Alexander

Is it wrong to be this Ravenous?
When Jennifer Finn was good, she was very good, and when she was bad…she got arrested for assault and indecent exposure. Now Jen’s back in school and determined to find her balance. But one man seems just as determined to destroy her equilibrium, and he knows all the right buttons to push.
What began as a favor for an old friend became something more the instant Trick Dunham laid eyes on Jen. Now he can’t resist inserting himself into her life, despite warnings from her family. Little Finn might be struggling to find her path but Trick knows exactly where she belongs. What she needs. He just has to get her and their third to agree.
Professor Declan Kelley has a weakness for his old lover, Trick. The bad boy ex-con has become a wickedly sensual man who comes whenever he pleases, but never stays. When he shows up again it’s to offer Declan one of his darkest desires to date—Jennifer Finn and Trick together on a three-way platter. But that would threaten the safe, uncomplicated life he’s built for himself, and Declan’s not doing that for anything.
Unless it’s forever…
Warning: This book is a Jenga tower of sin. Explicit, graphic, shocking, teetering-on-the-edge-of-unbalanced, unapologetic sin. M/m, m/f, f watching m/m together and liking it so much that m grabs f and makes her a part of the dirtiest m/m/f ménage in history. That’s right, I said it. Role play—the hot-for-teacher kind, the sexy-thief-in-the-night kind AND…well sometimes you just have to ignore the warnings and dive right in.
It is not easy being the only girl in a family of big bad men, just ask Jennifer or as she is lovingly called, Little Finn. Ravenous by R.G. Alexander is Jen’s story. This is the fourth story in the Finn Factor and it is another winner.
One of the things I love about this series is the variety of loving couples R.G. Alexander has and is giving us. We have had some great mm and a mf but Ravenous takes us in another direction one society has not yet considered accepting, polyamorous or ménage is the term used more frequently. This is not the only taboo in this story either *grins* There is one more and I will bet I am not the only one who has had a fantasy or two about it.
I enjoyed the fact that Jen is now just coming in to her own. She is in her mid-twenties and after making a few mistakes she is now getting her life on track, professionally and personally. Now if only the rest of the family will accept it, life would be good. Unfortunately this is where a lot of us can identify with Jen. Everyone has dreams and hopes for her and feel the need to protect her and help guide her. Boy are they in for a surprise, or two.
I also love the family participation of this story. Even though each story has their own Finn for a main character and focuses on them, we get to see and learn more about the rest of the family as well. With a family the size of the Finns there are a lot of closets and as we are finding out each closet has its own skeleton. WOW! In Ravenous more than one closet has opened and the skeletons in those closets are going to cause Little Finn a whole bunch of trouble. It seems the past is repeating its self. If only High School History class was this exciting I would have done better *wink*
Now the good and the bad wrap up. I have not mentioned our sexy leading men Trick and Declan, like Jennifer you have to experience them all on your own. This story really needed to be extended. There was a big gap in time at the beginning and it would have been great to see what was happening. I also would have loved to see more about Trick and Declan’s past. Speaking of the past, the history lesson we get on the Finn Family will knock your socks off!!
So get comfy and enjoy Ravenous by R.G. Alexander. You may also want to keep an eye on her because in December we should be getting Finn Again, a Christmas anthology, with A Curious Wedding: An Owen and Jeremy quickie.

Malcolm Tate hung up his flogger when his submissive sought out another Dom and landed in the hands of a serial killer. Convinced his lack of dominance sent his sub away, Mal has spent two years blaming himself for what happened. But when his best friend finally convinces him to go back to the local dungeon, Mal’s grateful. Especially when he wins beautiful, submissive, firmly closeted Kyle Bingham in a charity slave auction.
College grad Kyle hasn’t earned enough to move out of the loft his conservative, homophobic parents bought, much less to buy any of the other things still in their name. When he’s won at auction by the hot, amazing Mal, he’s shocked that anyone would want him. No one else seemed to—not his parents, his former Doms, or any of his disastrous dates.
But Mal does want him and Kyle lets his guard down, only to be outed to his parents. With his world crashing down, he must find a way to trust Mal—and their developing relationship—or risk losing everything.
‘Beautiful Boy’ is a Tale of Two Journeys; one Dom and one sub with common ground based in a background of grief and heartbreak. It is a tale of venturing out of the depths when there is no where to go but up, and yet still being wary of an uncertain future and the ability to surmount its obstacles; real and manufactured.
I’m not generally a fan of insta-attraction, or even insta-lust but there is something about these two characters, their backgrounds and their somewhat parallel journeys that made it more than possible to suspend disbelief and get on board with the relationship. Quick off the mark, the pace of the relationship is just as explosive, going from a charity slave auction scene to a 24/7 dynamic in fact. But more than that, it is gratifying to watch as Mal is healed by both the submission and the love that Kyle aches to give. It is equally gratifying to witness Kyle as he is held up and validated by the gift of self acceptance he is given from Mal, and the Boy he acknowledges he wants to be for him.
There is some intense heat as the two explore nature and nurture, some highs and lows with family, friends and not-so friends, and a satisfying culmination of the story that is Mal and Kyle. Some very minor flow issues aside, this is a compelling character-driven relationship story that hits all the right notes in the telling.

Chief Warrant Officer V Grey Lawrence never once stopped to consider what he was doing or why, just being there for Nathan Blaise, a Senior Technician of Explosives Ordinance Disposal, who’d just lost his leg from a mission gone wrong, seemed to be the right thing to do. And somehow Grey found some renewing comfort of his own when he was with him. Except, Nathan will be transferring home back to the state-side of the world soon, and Grey still had the war’s never ending wounded to deal with here.
So why was he doing this to himself?
Reasons only a past Dear John letter and the restored heart he found when he read the touching words written by an anonymous woman, the soldiers had penned ‘the Beloved Woman’ could explain. Perhaps those two things plus the half of a wounded man who could heal Grey’s own dark half would deliver him to a future he never imagined or expected for himself again.
I loved how Princess SO brought our characters to life with this story. I thought starting this story with the scene of Grey and Corbin and the letter from book one, “Dear Soldier, With Love” was perfect.
In chapter one we were given most of the technical information we needed. It was worked into the story perfectly as Grey and Corbin were flying two patients in from the field for medical attention. We were also given a look at what our troops go through in times of war. Which leads up to the really bad things that happen during a war and a major part of this story? I think that the world building of this story was fantastic! Princess S.O. described things and events very well. From the floor boards to movements of the characters, you can see it all. We have also been given some very strong secondary characters and characters that are like standbys that should be there but aren’t part of the story, like the two patients in the work out room/gym. I think this makes the story more vivid/real.
I think that Princess S.O. made the right choice in leaving out the steamy sex scenes. Don’t get me wrong I love the great sex scenes that Princess SO can write but this story holds its own without them. The suggestion of them was great, and we all know sometimes it is the hint or subtle peek that proves even sexier than a full blown picture. I feel this also left the story more about the people, events and emotions. Princess SO also nailed the feelings and emotions of the characters perfectly!
The secondary characters – the Colonel, Corbin, Alison and Leann all played a part in getting our men where they needed to be. I loved when Alison put her fist on her hip and let Nathan have it!!! And even thought it was never said I think the Colonel was behind getting Grey and Nathan time together *wink* There is another letter in this story and I was hoping Corbin read it. But when the author (yes at this point Princess S.O. becomes “the author” LOL) took this story in the same direction as the first I could not believe it. All I could think was oh hell no! It is at this point we are shown what a wonderful story teller Princess S.O. really is and how sneaky she can be. When you read about Grey and Nathan I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

Specialist Amanda Sumner is one of the first to make contact on the Earth-like planet Harp and discovers she’s the only Earthling, who can hear the trees sing in the strange forest. Determined to remain and learn more of the planet’s secrets, Amanda sets out to become part of the elite Guild there…
But there is a secret involving some Guild members–one that could get her killed.
Shifter Rhodry de Mendoza wants the Earthlings off his planet before they destroy it—even if that means denying what he feels for the fierce and lovely Amanda. The pair is thrown together in what becomes a fight for their lives. And they might just lose everything–including each other–in their battle for the right to live in peace.
True to form, Ms. Reynolds has created another very vivid world that blends the familiar and human with the imaginary and pseudo-human in an appealing read. Complete with space-based humans of Earth origin, meeting a heretofore lost world of once-humans who engineered their own survival in a genetically altered state, there is a wealth of possibility in the story setting. The heroine is typically Reynolds’ kick-a$$, and both a physical and intellectual equal of the hunter-males. Following a contentious beginning for the Hero-Heroine, circumstances ultimately dictate that they work together to save each other, outwit the pervasive bad guys, and secure the future well-being of their world. And the story line for that matter…
I loved Amanda. She was a character of innate inner strength, made no excuses and accepted no impediment – – self imposed or otherwise – – to her personal goals. She prepared herself for eventualities that put her at a disadvantage, and overcame in her own way. She accepted her unexplained affinity to the new planet and embraced it, ultimately proving that she belonged. Albeit, the hard way.
Rhodry was a likeable if curmudgeonly sort and was, along with his kinsmen, very appealing as good-to-be-bad guys go. However, and this is probably not a fair assessment, he was no “Raphael”, for those who have read Ms. Reynolds’ alter-series. As a reader I found I did not connect with Rhodry in the same way – with the same intensity – I did Raphael, and consequently, I did not feel the depth of relationship between he and Amanda I might have wished to experience.
Some fun if largely incidental secondary characters to this story wait in the wings and while the baddest of the bad guys were dispatched to oblivion, still others linger, and between them, offer potential future story lines.
A great deal of set-up for the brave new world went into this book. It was indeed a captivating setting and easy to visualize during the read. But it was almost so at the expense of the characters who inhabit the world. With the exception of Amanda, they lacked the same dimension, and as such did not contribute to the scope the story, in its entirety, might have otherwise had.
Don’t misunderstand; this is a compelling world that is now firmly established, and I believe there are some extremely worthy character-driven stories waiting in the wings. I look forward to more blending of worlds.
