A three-day weekend then Baltimore Comic Con 2014 happened

And I am back, I have been away for three days at Baltimore Comic Con 2014 with Tristan the Teddy Bear bringing his book, the Cuddly Sketches and Cuddly Defenders to the masses. It has been a long three-day convention at the Baltimore Convention Center with two very humid days, and a very, very, very long Saturday – but in all a fun convention.

A little slower than some shows, slow and steady is good though and I had some great conversations about Tristan and his world in the Teddy Bear Tales, and as I always hope some new fans for our Cuddly Friends. My art did well too, especially the GROOT prints they were really popular making me consider perhaps I should brought the wood earlier? Still I have been a Rocket Raccoon and Guardians Fan for a long time, that I am almost the hipster of Rocket fandom. Now is their time.

In all it was a good show for the Teddy Bear Tales and I managed to network about the books which is what these conventions are about for me anyway. Now next stop for me and Tristan is Retro Con at the end of this month.

KICKSTARTER LAUNCH! ‘Out of the Attic’ – Book Two of Tristan and the Cuddly Defenders

Come one! Come all! I have officially launched the Kickstarter for Book Two of Tristan and the Cuddly Defenders – Out of the Attic. This is the second book in graphic novel mash-up of comic/storybook storytelling that is the Cuddly Defenders book and only you can help make it happen!

Olaf – Captain of the Tower Guard by Dan Nokes

Cuddly Defenders Two will feature all the heroes of the last book, Tristan, Wilma, Archer and Fernando and also bring new characters to like Olaf of the Tower Guard and the buddy story of Forrest and Scout – who are hunting down their child’s Monsters of the Month.

This is a brand new book, over 64 pages of full-color Teddy Bear adventure as the Cuddly Defenders protect innocence and wonder against the Bogeyman and the Monsters under the Bed. I am joined again on this journey by Teddy Bear Artist Dan Nokes, and we are bringing along new companions as  Time of Hugs Creator Scott Markley and Keir Knikia Lyles of Apocrypha Comics Studio jump on board bringing a new look and new stories to the Cuddly Defender book.

Meet my blended watercolor pencil sketch – I AM BABY GROOT after watching the fun end credit of GROOT dancing in his plant pot I knew I had to take a swing at drawing the ‘Monster from Planet X.’  GROOT came together fairly quickly and I think one of the most effective sketches I have done, you can view the Work-In-Progress (WIP) after the jump.

A Very Different Teddy Bear Tale Synopsis from the Project Fabula Collection

A Teddy Bear’s Revenge by Nick Davis

I am going to share with you a very different Teddy Bear Tale that is currently in synopsis and is tagged to be part of the upcoming and work-in-progress story collection I have called Project Fabula,  (more on that after the jump.) This synopsis is a story about  a Teddy Bear, but it isn’t an innocent story you would expect from A Teddy Bear Tale or Cuddly Defenders graphic novel, this is something very, very different… Journey down the rabbit hole after the jump.

A Teddy Bear’s Journey

A Synopsis by Nick Davis

It is a dark night, a small Teddy Bear is standing in the half-light next to a garbage can, his body in shadow and he is looking up at a window remembering his journey back to this point. He is remembering how his boy gathered him and his friend all up, Spaceman, Panda, Bunny, Monkey and him, how they were excited at the thought, that after such a long time of being ignored they were going to get played with again.

Then everything goes dark as they are thrown into a trash bag, then placed in the garbage can, a moment later there Boy reaches in with a cruel grin on his face and pulls out Spaceman while cackling,’Going to send him back into orbit.’

The Cuddly Toys watch helplessly from the garbage can to see spaceman get launched into the air on a rocket that their boy tied him too. The rocket explodes and only the burning stuffing of Spaceman returns to the earth. Bunny is in tears the rest of the toys cling to each other in horror. The Boy laughing at the demise of Spaceman, is only sad he does not have anymore more rockets for the rest of his pathetic toys or matches so he can burn them. So he goes off to find some more so he can video tape it for Youtube.

The Garbage truck arrives first and the toys end up in the back. They hear the compactor come down and try to escape, but Panda is too fat and gets crushed.

Scared the Cuddly Toys  stumble into a backyard in daylight, and get attacked by a dog and Bunny is taken never to be seen again. Panicking Monkey and Teddy take shelter in a drain and fall asleep as it starts to rain. The drain fills up, and the toy remaining toys struggle to escape, but the current washes Monkey away into the depths of the sewer. .

Only the Teddy Bear remains, and he is angry to lose all his friends because of the mistreatment of their Boy and he vows revenge. As he makes his way back to his once home he falls foul of a cat, but fights it off with stick, but not before his eye and half his smile is scratched out.

We return to the window panel, to see the Teddy Bear climbs in and sneak into his boy’s room who is now fast asleep. The Teddy finds one of his boys knifes, and a book of matches. Standing over the bed of the boy he once loved unconditionally, his beaten, scared form casts a hideous shadow. Remembering all the friends he has loved and lost, the Teddy Bear lights a match that casts light across his face now carved into a sneer.

‘We kept you safe from the Monsters under the bed.’

‘We held you when you cried at night.’

‘We played with you when no one else would.’

‘And you repay us by throwing us into the garbage, by setting my friend on fire!’

‘This is for Spaceman, Panda, Bunny, Monkey and me!’

The match fizzes out, the smell wakes up the boy who looks up to see the Teddy Bear looming over him knife in paw.

The Teddy Bear leaps, ‘I’m going to make you fear the night you Bastard!’

Panel fades to black.

What is Project Fabula?

Project Fabula (fantastic story) is a collection of darker and more mature stories, mixing up comedy, horror, comic book action, narrative stories and experimental story  telling. It allows me to be creative in a different way and tell stories I would not normally tell. I hope in the upcoming year to collect all the Project Fabula stories  into one large book. Why is this important? Well, I guess it depends on your point of view. You see every Teddy Bear Tales postcard is a limited print run featuring an original Tristan the Teddy Bear piece. I give out the postcards at shows as free gift as an introduction to the Teddy Bear Tales, art on the front and an extract from the story on the back. So if you are a fan of the Teddy Bear Tales you have to collect them all!
