Gina Gershon talks about losing, and finding her cat

Gina_Gershon_with_Cleo_cat

Most people know Gina Gershon as a prolific movie and television actress with such movies as Bound, Face Off, and Showgirls to her credit. But since the publication of her book, In Search of Cleo, Gina has also become known as a cat person.

In Search of Cleo: How I Found My Pussy and Lost My Mind is the story of Gina’s two-month search for her beloved cat Cleo, after her assistant lost the cat while taking her to a groomer in Los Angeles.

I had a chance to speak with Gina via telephone last wee...

While nothingquite equals the moment when Leslie Smith, the Editor for DogTime/CatTime Media, announced that The Conscious Cat won the 2012 Pettie for Best Cat Blog during the virtual award ceremony on October 12, there’s been a little more excitement even after the win. Since noone had more to do with us winning this award than all of you who read The Conscious Cat each and every day, I want to share all the fun with you.

A week ago, our trophy arrived in the mail. As you can see in the pictu...

Help animals affected by Hurricane Sandy

cat in the rain with umbrella

Animal rescue groups across the Mid Atlantic and Northeast are working hard to help animals affected by Hurricane Sandy. While itwas heartening to see that we seem to have learned some lessons from Katrina, and that many shelters were accepting pets, petswere lost during the chaos of evacuations, and others are displaced because their guardians lost their homes.

Humane societies and shelters in the affected areas are working hard to provide assistance and shelter to pets and guardians in need....

Giveaway: Cattystacks designer cat climbers

Cattystacks

The tagline for Cattystacks’ modular cat climbers is simple: “Because cats love boxes.” The designers of these cubes, made from industrial strength corrugated cardboard, took this concept a little further and created theseesthetically pleasing boxes thatcome in a rainbow of fun colors.

I purchased three of these stacks for Allegra and Ruby a couple of years ago, and they still provide daily fun for both of them. Whether it’s climbing, hiding, stalking, or using them as an elevated vantage point...

Ruby’s Reflections: eating treats, the Ruby way

Ruby_cat_window_perch

Hi everyone! It’s Ruby! It’s been a while since I got to write something here!

Mom said I should share with you what I do when she gives me treats. She says it makes her laugh every single time I do it. I don’t know what she’s talking about. Treats are serious business, and there’s nothing funny about eating them!

As soon as Mom gets out the bag of treats, and puts a piece in front of me, I reach out and put my paw on it. You never know, Mom might change her mind and take it back. Also, sometim...

Living with an arthritic senior cat

tabby_cat

Guest post by Lorie Huston, DVM

Living with a senior cat has rewards as well as challenges that are a bit different than those encountered when living with a younger cat. Pain is, of course, something we don’t want to see in any of our pets. However, senior cats are more likely to develop conditions and illnesses that create pain and discomfort. Arthritis is a common but often unrecognized disorder in older cats. In one study, 90 percent of cats over 12 years of age showed radiographic (X-ray)...

A word about Hurricane Sandy

Allegra, Ruby and the maple tree

What a difference a few days make. This photo showsAllegra and Rubyrelaxing in our sunny bedroom last Wednesday. This evening, we’re preparing for the arrival of Hurricane Sandy. Right now, it’s just raining a little, but we’re supposed to get high winds and heavy rain starting Monday morning, and lasting into Tuesday evening. Other areas to the east and north of us are expecting even worse conditions.

We’re as ready as you can ever be for an event like this. I only just returned from Atlanta...

Conscious Cat Sunday: the benefits of stretching

cat_stretching

Stretching is an important part of healthy living: benefits range from increased flexibility and mobility to better athletic performance and decreased risk of injury. A regular stretching program has been part of my daily routine for more than 30 years. I’ve had minor back problems ever since I was a young adult, and twice daily stretching exerciseshave most likely helped savemy back again and again.

And who better to teach us the importance of stretching than our cats? Have you ever seen a ca...
