Mews and Nips: Cat makes runway debut at New York Fashion Week

cat_at_fashion_week

A rescue cat named Lily was the first cat to ever walk on the runway at New York’s famed Fashion Week. The 4-year-old rescue cat showed off her stylish Siamesecoat on February 10 during the Tracey Reese fashion show at Lincoln Center. I don’t follow fashion,so I don’t get all that excited about Fashion Week, but any time a cat, especially a rescue cat, becomes part of a mainstream event, it makes me happy. Cats and birds: the joys of birdwatching for indoor cats

cats_birdwatching

With the recent bad press cats have been getting with regards to birds(read my post Faulty Science Spread Lies About Cats and Their Impact on Wildlife for more information), I thought I’d highlight one area where birds cannot only coexist peacefully with cats, they can also provide stimulating entertainment for indoor cats, and the best part: nobody gets hurt.

Thetopic of indoor vs. outdoor cats can be controversial for many, but for me, it’s pretty black and white. All of my cats have always...

Review: The Yoga Cat Mat

cat_yoga_mat

I’ve always felt that cats and yoga make for a purr-fect combination, which his why I was delighted when I discovered Feline Yogi, a blog with the tagline “Celebrating the Most Enlightened Species – the Cat!” Feline Yogi is brought to you by Pippy, a feline yogini who has her paws full to keep her humans in line: “They spend an obscene amount of time in front of their computers,” says Pippy, “when they could be taking care of my needs.” Pippy’s human Paige says she’s doing her best to be at t...

Mammary cancer in cats

mammary_cancer_in_cats

An estimated 30 percent to 40 percent of all cats will be affected by cancer. Mammary (breast) cancer is the third most common cancer in cats, after lymphoma and skin cancer. More than 90% of the victims are female cats older than 10 years of age. Early detection of this type of cancer is critical and greatly improves chances of survival for affected cats.

Symptoms

Mammary tumors often appear as small, hard lumps the size of a pebble or pea. They may be moveable, or may be firmly attached to th...

Conscious Cat Sunday: Allegra on happiness

cat_on_window_perch
Purring would seem to be, in her case, an automatic safety-valve device for

dealing with happiness overflow. – Monica Edwards

Two weeks ago, we tried to answer the question “what is happiness?” At that time, Ruby got to share her definition. Today, it’s Allegra’s turn.

In Allegra’s World, happiness is:

Sleeping on top of the cable box. What a fabulous invention, and how thoughtful of Mom to provide it for me.
Sleeping on my sunny window perch (do you see a theme here).
Breakfast, dinner, treats- I...

Mews and Nips: cats take over popular culture

cat_Monopoly_playing_piece

Both of today’s stories come from popular culture, and they both made me smile because they prove yet again that cats are, indeed, taking over the world. Our first story spread like wildfire once it hit the wires: Hasbro, Inc., the maker of Monopoly, announced that it is adding a cat token to the the real estate game. The cat will replace the iron, which is being retired. This change is the result of an online contest, which let fans vote on the tokens. I wonder whether this new addition to t...
