Conscious Cat Sunday: Accept What Is
There is nothing either good or bad,but thinking makes it so.-William Shakespeare, Hamlet
One of the greatest sources of unhappiness is the inability to accept things as they are. Accepting what is, without wishingthings were different, can trip up even the most serene among us. And yet, accepting what is is the key to living a positive, present life.
Accepting what is, like so many things, is about living in the moment. It’s about looking at the present moment without judgment. In order to liv...

Mews and Nips: Cat Saves Dog
When it comes to heroic cats, Sammy the Lifesaving Cat, as he is being called, deserves major kudos for courage. Sammy is credited with saving the family dog’s life by fluffing himself up and confronting the bully when an aggressive bigger dog had little Izzy in its mouth. Life with Cats reports that Sammy raised and puffed out his fur and approached the big dog, then led it on a chase after it dropped Izzy to the ground. Sammy escaped without injury, and Izzy is being treated for her injurie...

Review: The Cat Whisperer by Mieshelle Nagelschneider
It is heartening to me that we’re seeing more and more books on feline behavior that provide solid, actionable information for cat guardians. Far too many cats are surrendered to shelters, or worse, released into the wild to fend for themselves, because of behavior problems that often aren’t all that hard to fix. In The Cat Whisperer: Why Cats Do What They Do – and How to Get Them To Do What You Want, Mieshelle Nagelschneider explains cat behavior and provides easy-to-follow solutions to comm...

Ruby’s Reflections: The Art of Lap Sitting
Hi everyone, it’s Ruby! I thought I’d present a tutorial I developed for how to make the most of your time on your human’s lap. Mom says I’m the best little lap sitter, and I’m constantly purr-fecting my technique!
1. Begin by looking up at your human with a pitiful expression on your face. You know you can jump on your human’s lap anytime you please, but it’s more effective to make your human think they have to coax you up. It works like a charm 99% of the time with Mom. The other 1% (hey, ar...

What Does Responsible Cat Care Mean?
The American Veterinary Medical Association recently issued a set of Guidelines for Responsible Pet Ownership, stating that “owning a pet is a privilege and should result in a mutually beneficial relationship. However, the benefits of pet ownership come with obligations.” I think the AVMA is a bit behind the times with still using the term “owner” when it comes to pets. Most of us consider our catspart of the family, which is why I prefer the term “guardian” or even “pet parent.” But they do...

Conscious Cat Sunday: Listen to Your Body
Guest post by Angie Bailey
I find I often make choices based on my schedule or to-do list instead of listening to my body’s wisdom. I’m pretty certain I’m not alone in this one. Sometimes choices based on schedules and lists are necessary – I’d certainly never blow off a job interview because I felt like I needed a nap; however, within the times of the day that really are flexible (despite what my planner pad says), I can certainly adjust my activities.
A cat is a master at listening to what hi...
