National Hairball Awareness Day 2013

hairball

Today is National Hairball Awareness Day, and you’ll see a lot of information about hairballs, hairball remedies, and so-called hairball diets online. Hairballs are often thetopic of jokes and cartoons, but there is nothing funny about a cat who gets frequent hairballs. While the occasional, isolated hairball may be nothing to worry about, there really is no such thing as “just a hairball.”

I’d like to offer some information on hairballs that you may find startling, and to shed some light on w...

Review: Skinny the Cat and the Magic of Kindness by Donna Rawlins

Skinny_the_Cat

Cats can teach us a lot of things, including how to make the world a better place. In Skinny the Cat and the Magic of Kindness, Donna Rawlins shares the story of a neighborhood cat who wins her heart.

From the publisher:

When Skinny, a neighbor’s scrawny rescue cat, sets out to win the affection of the author’s own cantankerous kitty, at first the fur flies-but Skinny knows a secret that can change the world: how to love with unwavering persistence. For weeks, Skinny faithfully showed up at the...

Do You Remember Your First Cat?

Feebee cat in blue chair

I’d venture that most of us can remember the cat that started it all: the one cat that launched us on the path of loving cats. For some, it may be a childhood cat, for others, it may be a more recent, and unexpected feline who decided that it was time for the human to share her life with a cat, or two or three.

I didn’t get myfirst catuntil I was in my twenties. I was not allowed to have pets as a child; the apartment building I grew up in would not permit them, but I would temporarily adopt c...

Weruva Cat Food Review

If you’ve read this blog for any length of time, you know that I’m passionate about species-appropriate nutrition for cats. Cats are obligate carnivores, and they need meat not only to survive, but to thrive. The optimal diet for a cat is a properly formulated raw, home-cooked or grain-free canned diet. Cats shouldn’t eat dry food; even the grain-free dry varieties are too high in carbohydrates.

You can find many of the articles I’ve written about this topic in the Feline Nutrition section rig...

Conscious Cat Sunday: Appreciate Life in the Face of Darkness

tortoiseshell_cat_chair

In the wake of the Boston bombings, many of us are still struggling with processing the horror of what happened, sharing the collective grief of a nation whose peace was once again disrupted by an act of terrorism, and trying to make sense of something that is completely senseless. Even people who were thousands of miles away from Boston, and who weren’t worried about family or friends, found themselvesfilled with sorrow and hopelessness about a world where these tragedies can happen.

How do y...
