Feline Blood Bank Saves Lives

Feline_Blood_Bank

Cats may need blood transfusions for a variety of reasons, such as trauma, surgery, cancer or infectious diseases. There are currently several animal blood banks in the United States, but due to the unique nature of cats, feline blood products are much harder to come by than their canine counterparts.

In order to be a blood donor, a cat needs to meet several criteria: they must be indoor only, between 1 and 8 years of age, weigh at least 10 pounds, not be on any medication and pass a number of...

Conscious Cat Sunday: Fall Colors

fall morning 004

I have a love hate relationship with fall: I enjoy the beautiful colors of autumnall around me,but I also can’t help but think about what comes afterwards. I’m a summer girl; I thrive on warm weather and sun light. Come to think of it, I’m much like a cat in that respect! I don’t like cold weather, and I definitely don’t like snow.

However, in the spirit of living in the moment – something my cats remind me to do each and every day – I try to embrace fall in all its glory. I’m making it a poin...

Mews and Nips: Your Cat Isn’t Ignoring You

cat_hiding_under_covers

While a (very) few cats may come when they’re called, most of us have probably experienced the aloofness that seems to come natural to many cats. I like to call it “selective hearing.” Ruby and Allegra sometimes respond when I call them, but they ALWAYS respond when I shake the treat bag! A study done at the University of Tokyo showed that cats are listening, and are able to recognize their human’s voice. They just won’t necessarily do what we’d like them to do – after all, they’re cats. You...

Review: Lil BUB’s Lil Book: The Extraordinary Life of the Most Amazing Cat on the Planet

Lil_BUB_book

When I first saw the title of Lil BUB’s Lil Book: The Most Extraordinary Life of the Most Amazing Cat on the Planet, I balked a little at the subtitle. I don’t begrudge Lil’ BUB, or any of the other internet cat celebrities their fame, but really, don’t we all think that our own cats are the most amazing cats on the planet? I certainly think Allegra and Ruby are!

But then I opened the book. And unlike the hundreds of images I’d seen of Lil Bub on the internet before then, this little book made...

Last year’s calendar was a huge success, and we think this year’s calendar is even better. Allegra and Ruby helped me pick out the photos, and they made sure that they received equal representation!

Tortie lovers, to my knowledge, this is the only calendar on the market that exclusively features tortoiseshell cats.

Here is a preview of some of the pages:

Today is National Feral Cat Day. This day was launched by Alley Cat Allies, a national advocate for feral and stray cats and the foremost authority on Trap-Neuter-Return, in 2001 to bring attention to the unnecessary killing of cats in animal control pounds and shelters.

Keep Your Cats Safe this Halloween

Halloween_cat

Halloween may be a fun-filled holiday for humans, but it can be extremely stressful, and even dangerous, for our cats. From decorations to humans wearing scary costumes to the constant ringing of the doorbell, this is probably one holiday most of our cats would like to do away with.

In a recent article on Answers, I offered some tips on how to keep your cats safe this Halloween.

Veterinary Technicians: The Unsung Heroes of the Veterinary Profession

Veterinary_Technician_Week

When your cat goes to the veterinary hospital, chances are she’s going to spend much more time with veterinary technicians or other veterinary staff members than with the veterinarian. Veterinary technicians are educated in the latest medical advances and skilled at working alongside veterinarians to give cats the best medical care possible.

The National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America, Inc. (NAVTA) has designated October 13 through 19 as National Veterinary Technician Week. I...

Conscious Cat Sunday: Workplace Wisdom

cat_with_computer

Guest post by Angie Bailey

I feel tremendously grateful that I get to work from home as a freelance writer. I do what I love and am able to manage my day with some flexibility. My cats are constantly with me while I work. They lie on my lap, on my desk and at my feet. I even placed a basket on the corner of my desk so they could have their own special spot.

I believe I do a pretty great job managing my time and staying organized, but there are always ways I can improve my methods and the way I...

Mews and Nips: Could the United States Get Its First Cat Cafe?

Vienna_Cat_Cafe

Last week, we reported on the opening of the first cat cafe in Paris, France. Could the US finally be getting its first cat cafe? According to CBS Boston, a young entrepreneur hopes to open Miaou Boston by the end of this year. “I’ve had this idea for a while now ever since learning about them through the internet a couple of years ago,” the woman wrote on her blog “Cat Cafe Dream.” Health department rules prohibit animals in restaurants, but there may be ways to get around these constraints,...
