5 Home Objects That Make Great Cat Toys

homemade_cat_toys

Play is essential for your cat’s well-being. It mimics the cat’s natural hunt and prey instinct, it keeps kitty stimulated, and it provides excercise. And while pet stores are brimming with cute and innovative toys, cat toys don’t have to expensive, and you don’t even have to leave the house to find new ones. If your cat hasn’t already shown you the way by turning every day household objects into fun and perfectly safe toys, my article on Answers.com has some suggestions for you!

Indie Rock Video Features 29 Cats

cat_music_video

I love music, especially rock music. I like pretty much every genre of rock, from classic to alternative to heavy metal. But rock music and cats don’t always go together, especially since most cats don’t like loud noises (I make sure I only blast my music at top volume when I’m in my car, away from Allegra and Ruby’s sensitive ears.)

When Sasha Righini, the drummer for the indie rock band The Plastics from Cape Town, South Africa, contacted me about a new music video the band had recorded, I t...

Review: Unique Natural Products Carpet Shampoo

cats_and_carpet_cleaning

My entire house is carpeted (with the exception of the kitchen and bathrooms.) The carpet in my living room, hallway, and upstairs bedrooms is off white. And it’s the original carpet, so it’s almost 40 years old. Between the home’s original owners and me,my carpets have dealt with a total of seven cats so far. Nobody who walks into my house believes me that the carpet is that old.

How I care for my carpet

I vacuum weekly, and for the first 20+ years that I’ve lived in this house, I’ve had my ca...

Conscious Cat Sunday: How Far We’ve Come

Conscious_Cat_Sunday

A few months ago, I wrote a Conscious Cat Sunday column titled “Be Your Cat.” I was happy to see that I’m not the only cat lover whose life has been improved by looking to my cats for inspiration on how to be a better person. In a recent Feline Wisdom column in Edge Magazine, Angie Bailey shared ways in which she has grown to be more like her cats.

Guest post by Angie Bailey

As I age (okay, I’m only 43, but I’m feeling wise and Maya Angelouish), I am less concerned with putting up appearances a...

Mews and Nips: Tortie Rescued from Brooklyn-Queens Expressway

Mews_and_Nips

As far as rescue stories go, this is one of the more amazing ones I’ve come across recently. Evon Handras, a Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals staffer, was on her way to work when she noticed a cat on top of a five-foot-high concrete ledge running along the expressway. “At first I thought someone must have hit her and then placed her there,” Evon recalled, “but then I realized she was hunkered down with her eyes closed. She was probably alive!”

Evon decided that she needed to try and help the...

How to Choose the Purr-fect Cat Name

how_to_name_a_cat

The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter, it isn’t just one of your holiday games. – T. S. Elliot

Guest post by Abigail Beal

T. S. Elliot may have been on to something. If you’ve just brought home an adorable cat or kitten from the local animal shelter, then you know what the next task is: finding a name for him. Maybe your new family member came with a name you don’t like, or that doesn’t suit. Picking a name for your cat can be a lot of fun, but it’s also a serious matter, and you’ll want to...

A Tribute to Homer, The Blind Wonder Cat

Homers_Odyssey

I read Homer’s Odyssey: A Fearless Feline Tale, or How I Learned About Love and Life from a Blind Wonder Cat by Gwen Cooper a few days after it was first released in 2009. The book debuted on the New York Times Bestseller List at number 14, and has been translated into more than 20 languages since then. This moving, inspirational and often funny story about a blind cat with a huge spirit and an endless capacity for love, joy and a determination to persevere no matter what the obstacles is a w...
