How cute is this paper towel holder? I love fun designs for utilitarian items, especially when it’s something we use multiple times a day. Just looking at this paper towel holder makes me smile.

Made from cast iron with a non slip EVA bottom, the Cat vs. Crow version comes in black, grey and red. There’s also a Cat vs. Dog version.

Help The Amazing Acro-Cats and Rock Cats Rescue Survive the Pandemic

amazing-acro-cats-rock-cats-rescue

I’m a big fan of Samantha Martin and her Amazing Acro-Cats. Up until I met her in 2015,  when she came through the Washington DC area with her Amazing Acro-Cats, I had been skeptical. I’m well aware of the controversy that surrounds circus performances, but after talking to Samantha for almost an hour and watching her with her cats, I was able to put any misgivings aside. This is anything but a cat circus.

From the moment I met Samantha, I knew that I had encountered a kindred spirit. Samantha ...

I’d like to offer huge congratulations to our friend Sarah Chauncey on today’s release of her new book, P.S. I Love You More Than Tuna.

If you’ve read The Conscious Cat for a while, you’re already familiar with Sarah’s work. She contributed a number of wonderful articles about pet loss to our site.

She first got the idea for the book after her 20-year-old heart cat Hedda passed away in December 2016. Her friend Francis Tremblay sent her a drawing, along with...

Ask the Cat Doc: When to Adopt Another Senior Cat, Socializing a Kitten, Cat Begging After Eating, and More

Ask-the-Cat-Doc-with-Dr.-Lynn-Bahr

Welcome to our regular “Ask the Cat Doc With Dr. Lynn Bahr” segment! Once a month, Dr. Bahr answers as many of your questions as she can, and you can leave new questions for her in a comment.

Dr. Bahr graduated from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine in 1991. Unlike most veterinarians, she did not grow up knowing that she would become a veterinarian. “It was a cat who got me interested in the practice and I am forever grateful to him,” said Dr. Bahr. Over the course of he...

Sunday Quotes: Chaos and Stillness

cat-field-autumn

It’s hard to maintain one’s center when the world around us is getting more insane every day. Today, I’d like to share something Mitra Rahbar, a spiritual teacher, healer and poet, posted on Facebook the other day.  I printed it out, because I find that I need to be reminded to disconnect from the madness when I find that my anxiety is edging off the charts.

Mitra has been sharing her wisdom from a very young age. You can find out more about this remarkable woman on her website.

“For those esp...

Mews and Nips: Archaelogists Find Huge Cat Carved Into Hillside 2,000 Years Ago

huge-cat-peru-desert

I don’t usually get excited about archeological finds, but this one had me awestruck. A huge feline figure carved into an arid hillside more than 2,000 years ago has been discovered in southern Peru. The geoglyph measures 121 feet across and is part of the Nazca Lines, a collection of hundreds of mysterious artworks etched onto a plateau 250 miles south of Lima. For the story of how the giant cat was discovered, visit SCNOW.com.

If you missed any of the stories featured on the Conscious Cat th...

Review: Catalyst by Sarah Beth Durnst

I rarely read books in the fantasy or young adult genres, but every once in a while, I get a pitch to review a book that sounds so intriguing that I agree to take a look. I’m glad I did for Catalyst. This story of 12-year-old Zoe, who rescues a tiny kitten on her birthday, and the adventures that her act of kindness lead to, appealed to me on a lot of different levels.

From the publisher:

Zoe named the kitten Pipsqueak, because she was so tiny, and promised ...

Remembering Ruby: That Time When Ruby Watched the Tree Trimmers

Ruby-window-perch

We’re coming up on about a year ago that Ruby first started to get sick and then rapidly declined. It’s hard to believe that she’s been gone almost ten months. There are days when I feel the grief as acutely as if she had only left yesterday. Memories are both comforting and painful, as you would expect when you’re grieving. I’m grateful that I not only captured so many on photos and videos, but also in her “Ruby’s Reflection” column. Today’s memory goes back to the summer of 2012.

When a gian...
