Five Star Review from Readers' Favorite

The Commode Companion just received this review:

Reviewed by Roy T. James for Readers' Favorite

The Commode Companion by Rolf C. Margenau is a collection of photographs termed by the author as an excellent bathroom companion. I felt bad, thinking he was belittling his work, then I read that his decision was in line with the scientific finding; laughter cures constipation. Now I agree with the author for this book is hilarious. It opens with the picture of a somber pup followed by that of a pensive cat. From lion to rat, snakes to weasel, or from monkey to a turkey, almost every animal manages to find a place in these frames. The imaginative captions of each photograph take the image and the reactions to an altogether new plane.

The Commode Companion by Rolf C. Margenau is like a breath of fresh air. It gave me no time to look elsewhere till I finished reading the last page. Each of the photographs depicts an animal in a pose worthy of response. Not only words fail me in expressing my emotions, but also emotions fail me in showing how I feel while savoring this book. The meaningful, insightful captions make this tasteful collection more enjoyable. I enjoyed each and every page of this book, all the photographs and captions, but failed miserably in finding a better caption, though Rolf invites us to find better ones. This is an excellent companion, whether in the bathroom or outside, and can hold one's interest for a long time, since the pictures tell stories and the short captions speak volumes.

Free Book - The Commode Companion

There's a giveaway on Amazon.com for one of the year's funniest books. It contains more than 100 photos of animals, birds, butterflies, and frogs with captions that describe their innermost thoughts. There are lions, tigers and bears, and smaller critters too. My personal favorites are the frogs, especially the one who wants a kiss. Give it a try. If you don't win, you could always (gasp) buy the book. Go here: https://giveaway.amazon.com/p/cd245ad...

A Sincere Apology

Last week I announced the imminent arrival of my latest book, The Commode Companion. A comment was made about a lion worried about erectile dysfunction, a caption under a photo of a lion. That lion contacted me, complained bitterly about my cavalier invasion of his privacy, and threatened to sue under the Animal Rights Act. What was I thinking? How could I have been so callous? That caption has been removed from the book, and I extend my sincerest apologies to that anonymous lion and all lions everywhere suffering from erectile dysfunction.

Senate's candy desk

In researching political trivia for National Parks, my novel about what happens when Congress decides to privatize our national parks, I discovered that there is a "candy desk" in the senate. In a tradition begun in 1968, Senator and former movie star George Murphy kept a drawer full of candy for members of the body (even though Senate rules prohibit eating in the chamber). The desk is located near an entrance to the chamber and is stocked by its current occupant. Most popular, it seems. was Rick Santorum's occupancy. He stocked it with candy from Pennsylvania - including Hershey chocolates.I report this to explain how much fun it is to write fiction, and how truth is truly stranger that, whatchmacallit? Oh yes, fiction.

Happy Holidays

To friends and fans. Best wishes and join me in hopes that the world will become less crazy and more peaceful in 2015. And thanks for supporting my writing. There have been a number of snowy days here in the New Jersey “mountains,” permitting more time to peck away at my latest effort—a satirical novel about what happens in the near future when Congress decides to sell the national parks. Wylie Cypher and granddaughter Portia are returning, aghast at the way government mismanagement now requires the sale of these properties to try to balance the budget. There are a bunch of new characters too. One of my favorites is Benjamin Franklin Chang, a Macau mobster who wants to buy the Smoky Mountain NP. He plans to set up bordellos and gambling casinos there. After all, why should Nevada have all the fun?

Modesty almost forbids...

But I need to mention that Readers' Favorite just posted a five star review for High Andes. It is always rewarding when a good reviewer "gets" the book.

Reviewed By Jack Magnus for Readers’ Favorite

High Andes by Rolf Margenau is an action and adventure thriller. Wylie Cypher is a successful partner at Biddle & Ofstrosky, a major New York law firm, with a number of international clients, but his life is getting stale. His relations with his wife are fairly dismal, and neither of them seems to care very much about that fact. His ethics seem less rigorous than they had been when he was younger; a fact made apparent to him in his reaction to a problem with a London sale. While he's in London, a friend introduces him to Lord Wimsey, who shares connections to Peru with Cypher. Cypher agrees to courier a package on his upcoming trip to Peru for Wimsey and unwittingly gets entangled in a scheme for exporting Incan artifacts.

Rolf Margenau's action and adventure thriller, High Andes, is a historical snapshot of Peru during the 1980s, but the story begins hundreds of years before that with the mummification and open-air burial of Cocohuay, a young child. The description of her burial and the discovery of her mummified body by the Peruvian campesino Gaspar had me immediately hooked and involved in the story. I loved the descriptions of the Andes, the cloud forest and the unspoiled beauty of Peru. High Andes is a unique and marvelous story which captures the tensions and confusion of a country torn by inequality and ripped apart by opposing political forces. This sets Wylie and his daughter Mercy down for a hiking/bonding experience that offers them and the reader a lot more excitement than they ever expected. High Andes is a highly entertaining and fast-paced thriller, and I had a lot of fun reading it. It's most highly recommended.
