Chuck Locklear is a retired educator, seasoned speaker, and longtime blogger. He holds a master’s degree in Curriculum, Instruction, and Leadership, and brings more than thirty years of experience as a teacher, administrator, magazine publisher, and motivational speaker. He now serves as pastor of WarrenHope in Warren, Michigan.

A proud member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina—the largest Native American tribe east of the Mississippi—Chuck draws on his heritage in his writing. While Jane is a fictional character, she could easily belong to the long line of ancestors who shaped his story.

Luckily, I have a good beta reader group, and one of the women consistently flags words and phrases for me. I've gotten to the point where I check the etymology of words often, using Dictionary.com. For my novel, I used some Tuscarora words, but not so many as to be distracting for the reader. I'd err on the side of reader understanding. For my next novel, I went back to 1607. That made the challenge even tougher. I had to stick with words familiar to Tutor England. I only had one experience with an editor at Histria. I got less interaction than I had hoped for. I'm glad for a strong beta reader group. (less)

I've been pleasantly surprised; they publish many more books each year than I originally thought. Now, they have partnered with Simon & Schuster for all their distribution, marketing, and sales. That has been a strong upgrade.(less)

Like Claire, Jane struggles with the English. Jane’s aunt, the clan mother, warns her that there is danger outside the village. “Women and children disappear all the time… likely seized for the slave trade.”

Despite these warnings, Jane cann

A Storm Coming by Chuck Locklear
"What a great book. I usually don't read historical fiction, but this is a must-read. This is a real page-turner. My favorite character is Jane. I saw things through her eyes. The story is about a Tuscarora woman's courage in an era of great darkness." Read more of this review »
