Cover Reveal & Giveaway: Two Roads

Two Roads by L.M. AugustineRelease date: August 26th, 2013Category/Genre: New Adult Romance

The only person poetry-loving Cali Monroe hates more than herself is Logan Waters, the geeky kid who lives in the dorm building next to hers.
Ever since Cali's parents told her she would amount to nothing, she has felt entirely inadequate. Friendless and alone, she takes on the mean girl role in hopes it will make her feel better--and Logan serves as the perfect target. He infuriates her with his obnoxiously long lashes, his all too perfect dimpled smile, and his complete lack of personality outside of his intelligence. It doesn't hurt that he's part of the reason her brother is dead, either. So Cali hates him, and he returns the favor. Thus, their prank-filled, insult-driven rivalry is born, and torturing Logan quickly becomes the highlight of her life.

But when Cali's parents set them up on a blind date, she begins to realize Logan might not be as boring as she always thought. He shares her love of poetry, takes a sadistic pleasure in making fun of crepes, and he makes her blush when he calls her smile pretty.

And hey, maybe those long lashes of his aren't that obnoxious after all...

Book Review: Eversea

Eversea by Natasha Boyd: When his co-star and real-life girlfriend is caught cheating on him with her married and much older director, A-list hottie, Jack Eversea, finds himself in sleepy Butler Cove, South Carolina. Jack hopes the sultry southern heat in this tiny coastal Lowcountry town will hide him not only from the tabloids and his cheating girlfriend, but his increasingly vapid life and the people who run it. He doesn't count on meeting Keri Ann Butler.

Keri Ann has relied on herself so long, dealing with her family’s death and the responsibilities of keeping up her family's historic mansion, that boys and certainly the meager offering of eligible boys in Butler Cove, have never figured into her equation. But fate has other plans. Suddenly face to face with the man who played the movie role of her favorite fictional character, Jack has Keri Ann yearning for everything she has previously avoided ... and Jack must decide whether this funny, sassy girl is worth changing his life for, before his mistakes catch up to him.

My thoughts: I enjoyed the setting for this book most of all. I liked reading about Butler Cove, South Carolina and the people of the small community. I loved Keri Ann. I wasn't so sure that I liked Jack all that much. I mean, seriously dude. Make up your mind what you want and stick with it. No waffling! :) Keri Ann has a lot of support from friends and family. There are some interesting, if not quirky individuals. The book has kind of a cliffhanger. Not horrible, just enough to lead into book two. I am interested in reading more about these characters and look forward to the 2nd book in the series. I think Natasha Boyd has written a great book with great characters. I just didn't like Jack as much as Keri Ann did, obviously.

Cover Reveal: Shelf Life

SHELF LIFE by STEPHANIE LAWTONPaperbackExpected publication: December 2013 by IJP Press
It’s impossible to focus on college biology when your family believes doomsday is imminent and the government is out to get you.

All Pete Wilson’s ever wanted is to become a veterinarian, but those dreams are going up in flames. Commuting to an urban college and helping his parents with their apocalyptic prepper crap is more than he can handle.

Worse, Pete’s asshole neighbor is stirring up trouble, his family’s stockpile has been destroyed and farm animals are turning up dead.

Lindsey Linger is the tomboy sister of his best friend. Now a sexy spitfire, she and Pete are liable to set the barn ablaze as their romance finally heats up. But she’s hiding a terrible secret, and rural life isn't all bonfires and hayloft romps. That becomes clear one icy winter night when the survival of everyone Pete loves hangs in the balance.

Can Pete be the hero they need, or will this be the end of the world as he knows it?

After collecting a couple English degrees in the Midwest and learning more about agriculture and farming than she ever wanted to know, Stephanie Lawton suddenly awoke in the deepest reaches of the Deep South. Culture shock inspired her to write about Mobile, Alabama, her adopted city, and all the ways Southern culture, history and attitudes seduce the unsuspecting.

A lover of all things gothic, she can often be spotted photographing old cemeteries, historic buildings and, ironically, the beautiful beaches of the Gulf Coast. She also has a tendency to psychoanalyze people, which comes in handy when creating character profiles.

Spotlight Saturday: Matthew Turner

Here are 10 random facts about Matthew Turner:

1. I am a father to a wonderful little lad.

2. I've worked at a summer camp in Cincinnati for 8 summers (this is where Beyond Parallel was inspired).

3. My alter ego is 'Turndog' (the name of my company is Turndog Millionaire).

4. I am a born and bred Yorkshireman (from a small town called Halifax).

5. I'm currently writing my second novel, Tick to the Tock.

6. My favourite colour is purple, which I tend to wear every day (bow ties, pocket squares, pens, chinos).

7. I have jumped out of a plane in New Zealand.

8. I've spent 4 months travelling the East Coast of Australia.

9. I consider myself a Nomadic Storyteller - stories have no home and can take on many forms.

10. I'm currently writing a non-fiction book called The Successful Mistake (where I interview 250 entrepreneurs and amazing minds).

And 10 facts about Beyond Parallel:

1. The premise is built around 'What If' and those small decisions we make each day.

2. It's set in the same mould as the movie Sliding Doors: two simultaneous timelines where Bella and Clark are a couple in one, but never meet in the other.

3. The story starts in Thailand but features visits to New York, Dayton, Sydney, Hawaii, and more…

4. The book took 6 years to write (I revisited rather a few times).

5. There's a Free Prequel that's set the night before (Tales From A Tiny Thai Table) which introduces the characters and overall setting.

6. It's a romantic novel, but not in the steamy sense - rather the real world, gritty type that most people can relate to.

7. The entire premise hinges on a single (very small) act that occurs in Tales From A Tiny Thai Table. From there the story splits in to two and offers an insight into how different life can be.

8. One line I love is: "Each person could live a billion lives, but is only given one. Is this fair? Is life merely a game of chance, or are some things a little more certain?"

9. The constant in the entire story is Sam, a fun loving and free spirit.

10. This book was inspired by a rough break up and become a form of therapy for me. It's so great to see the book out in the world. What a journey it has been.

Goddess Legacy by M.W. Muse

Published January 31, 2013

Legacy Kore is an average seventeen year old with your basic insane crush on the hottest guy in school... rather Adin Shepard was the hottest guy in school before he graduated a couple of weeks ago. Legacy a goddess? Um, yeah. Right. And her BFF is the Easter Bunny.

Interview: Emme Rollins

Interview: Emme Rollins
SRNA: Congratulations on the early success of DEAR ROCKSTAR!

ER: Thank you! I couldn’t have asked for a better debut. The feedback has been tremendous, most of it wonderful. I’m smiling so much every time I read a new review, my face hurts! Thanks to readers, it made it to Amazon’s Top 100!

SRNA: The book is set in the 1980’s. What drew you to that time period?

ER: I was born in the 1980’s and while I grew up mostly listening to 90’s music (Greenday and Goo-Goo Dolls and Live and bands like that), my sisters were much older and totally into 80’s music so it was around all the time. My oldest sister is ten years older than I am, and she was so in love with Rick Springfield she actually fainted at one of his concerts. I think I was about five at the time, so I didn't go to the concert, but I heard all about it. People kind of laugh and roll their eyes about 80’s music, but they forget what it was like before the indie music movement came along, in the days when there were no music downloads, when you had to go to an actual record store for albums. My sisters used to record their favorite songs off the radio! And all their boyfriends would give them “mix tapes” – not playlists! LOL It was a time when “celebrity”meant something a little different than it does now. Setting Dear Rockstar in the 1980’s offered me the opportunity to explore rock and roll before Napster and downloads and reality shows like American Idol changed the face of music.

SRNA: Most of the characters attend an alternative high school for kids that have a wide range of issues that prevented them from attending, or finishing, high school in a traditional manner. Why this setting?

ER: I actually worked in an alternative high school setting for a year as a school psychologist, and I met a lot of great kids whose lives had often been turned upside down by circumstance or bad luck or bad choices. It seemed like the perfect setting for two troubled young adults to find each other, while they were both working toward moving into a precarious adult world that had hurt them both.

SRNA: Sara is an intriguing character. Is she based on someone in particular?

ER: She’s based a little on my sisters, whose obsession with rock stars from Rick Springfield to Sting to Axl Rose pervaded our house (I was more prone to being an author fangirl, myself!) but she’s also based a little on a close girlfriend I had in high school whose obsession with a rock star was a smaller version of Sara’s. We would wait in line at Ticketmaster (this was before Ticketmaster sold tickets online!) the night before to get the best possible seats. Her walls were literally wallpapered with his picture. Hers was a rather harmless (if a bit excessive!) obsession, one I know many young girls experience. In that scenario, I was the “Aimee” – her best friend who told her stories about meeting and falling in love with the rock star! In Dear Rockstar, though, I wanted to explore what would happen if such an obsessed fan-girl met a real, flesh and blood guy, who not only rivaled her fantasy-rockstar, but who surpassed him by far.

SRNA: Did you model the two rock stars, Dale Diamond and Tyler Vincent, after specific people?

ER: Nope. It’s likely they’re a conglomeration of many, but as I wrote, they became their own people. I've never met a Dale Diamond – but I would sure like to! :)

SRNA: This is a somewhat disturbing view into issues that affect teens and young adults today; domestic violence, eating disorders, and teen pregnancy – to name a few. What do you hope the reader will gain from this insight?

ER: That these things are real, and they happen. They’re happening all the time, all around us, and most people are pretty unaware. In my experience, working with troubled kids and young adults, they’re very good at keeping secrets, and most of the time they don’t do it to protect themselves—they do it to protect the adults in their lives. As teens become young adults and gain independence, they start to realize they aren't living their parents’ lives, they’re living their own—and the secrets they've been keeping haven’t helped anyone. Especially themselves. They realize they've been swallowing their feelings, swallowing the truth. It’s like slowly poisoning yourself. It eats at you. Until you can’t take it anymore. That point usually comes when a teen realizes—hey, I’m my own person. I’m independent. I can separate from you (usually the parent). So all these things—domestic violence, eating disorders, teen pregnancy—are explored in various ways, in characters who are at different points in their development. Dale has integrated his secret and is protecting someone. Sara has dissociated herself, protecting her psyche from the horrible truth, through her obsession with Tyler Vincent.

I know a few readers have objected to the way I kept readers in the dark (I did give a few hints!) throughout the book and then hit them “out of nowhere” at the end. This served two purposes—a) it was art imitating life. Sara and Dale were keeping big secrets, and I, as an author, helped keep those secrets from the reader too. B) it served to hit the reader hard, coming as it does near the end, and it serves as a metaphor. The characters are hit hard too, and their lives turned suddenly upside down. I wanted the reader to really feel that, how fast life can change. In an instant.

SRNA: In developing characters, there is a lot of information authors have about their characters that never makes it onto the page. What don’t we know about Sara, Dale, and Tyler Vincent?

ER: There are more secrets to uncover in all of their lives, for the reader, and for me too. Just in the past few days, thinking about the sequel (yes, the sequel! I wasn't planning to write one, but so many people have asked that it got me to thinking…) I've uncovered a few more shockers about all three of them. But I’m afraid I can’t tell you yet… you’re going to have to read the sequel to find out! I do know this much - it will be called Lucky Girl—and the release date will be some time in October 2013.

SRNA: This book has just been released, yet I see you are already working on your next book. Can you give us a preview?

ER: Buried Secrets is a new adult romance mixed with a little mystery and even a tiny little bit of horror. Dusty’s twin brother, Nick, has been killed, just before he was set to go off to college, and her tremendous loss morphs an obsession to find his killer. Instead of going off to college herself, like she’d planned, she stays in her little northern Michigan home town, determined to solve the mystery of her brother’s death. The more she digs, the more signs point to Shane, her brother’s best friend and town bad boy. The tension and rivalry between Dusty and Shane has always been palpable and sparks fly as the two collide. Dusty finds herself sinking in deeper with Shane and the mystery of what happened to her brother–and a lengthening list of victims–grows even stranger. When everything comes to a head, Dusty focuses on one thing: What happened the night her brother was killed in the cemetery? She’s sure Shane is keeping a secret and she’s determined to find out what it is, one way or another.

SRNA: When can we expect to see it hit the shelves, or e-readers?

ER: Buried Secrets will be released on August 5, 2013. I’m holding a Goodreads paperback giveaway, so you can enter to win one here!

SRNA: What are you reading currently?

ER: Me, Cinderella? By Aubrey Rose and Random Acts of Crazy by Julia Kent. Also in the middle of N0S4ATU by Joe Hill (Stephen King’s son). I’m a huge Stephen King fan! :)

Thanks so much for your time, Emme!

Emme Rollins is an up and coming author of New Adult/Mature Young Adult fiction. She’s been writing since she could hold a crayon and still chews her pen caps to a mangled plastic mess. She did not, however, eat paste as a kid.

She has two degrees, a bachelor’s and a master’s, one of which she’s still paying for, but neither of which she uses out in the “real world,” because when she isn’t writing, she spends her time growing an organic garden to feed her husband and children (and far too many rabbits and deer!) where they live on twenty gorgeous forested acres in rural Michigan.

She loves tending her beehives (bees are wonderful pollinators and Hello!? Honey!) and keeping up with her daily yoga practice and going for long walks in the woods with her boxer, Rodeo, who loves chasing squirrels almost as much as Emme loves writing!

Book Review: Dear Rockstar

Dear Rockstar by Emme Rollins: "Sara is obsessed with rock star Tyler Vincent, and as she works to complete her senior year, she’s determined to find a way to meet him—although her best friend, Aimee, keeps telling her to find a different escape from her desperately violent home life.

Complications arise when Dale, the mysterious new transfer student, sets his sights on Sara, and she falls for this rock-star-in-the-making in spite of her better judgment. When Sara wins a contest, she is faced with a choice—travel to Tyler Vincent’s home town to meet him, or stay and support Dale in a Battle-of-the-Bands hosted by MTV.

Their triangulated relationship is pushed to its breaking point, but there is another, deeper secret that Dale’s been keeping that just may break things wide open...

Turn up your collar, feather your hair, and splash on some Polo, because we’re going back to the ‘80’s when MTV played music videos, there was no such thing as American Idol, and becoming a star meant doing nothing short of crazy for that one, big break."

My thoughts: So, this was quite the trip down memory lane. I remember when MTV got its start, and would spend hours watching it. Yes, I was two years old…

Sara is infatuated with a rock star. I know, I know…all teenage girls go through this at some point. Sara’s obsession, however, has reached epic proportions and borders on unhealthy. She has some serious issues at home, which are hinted at throughout the book, but are not fully understood until the end. Dale, the look-alike to Sara’s crush, has some secrets of his own, which are also not revealed until the end of the book. Although, I have to admit, I figured that one out pretty quickly. I found it hard to believe Sara could continue to be so obsessed with a man she had never met, when Dale was right in front of her, and was the man of most women’s dreams. I also struggled with how Dale did not run screaming from her when he realized she was totally infatuated – and would sacrifice the love they had – for a man she knew nothing about.

The book did a great job of dealing with some issues that are as prevalent in today’s society as they were in the 80’s. Domestic abuse, rape, eating disorders, and teen pregnancy weaved their way through the character’s lives, and showed how these problems affect more than just one person, but have far-reaching implications.

A touching love story if you can suspend disbelief just a bit. An easy read while you are sitting in the sun by the pool this summer.
