General Hume – Hand-made and Still Pissed!

As many of you know, my brother, Roman Bunn, has a gift for making fully-articulated action figures from common household items. I dunno how he does it (and I definitely don't wanna know what he uses for raw materials), but the results are always cool. He worked up a few toys based on The Damned, and you can see those here and here. This time around, he tackled General Oliander Bedford Hume from The Sixth Gun!

Flashback Friday – Krusher

Every Friday, I'll post a little look into my childhood. Maybe together we can figure out why I'm so messed up.

Meet Krusher. While he was billed as an "action" figure, he had no articulation. He was just a big rubber monster with a little orange valve on the back. What made him so awesome was that you could smash him down to be almost flat as a pancake and "lock" him in that shape until you released the valve, then he would slowly… menacingly… rise back to his muscle man stance. He was a terrific monster, and he filled the playtime role of Grendel-like superbeast. He battled Godzilla, Stretch Armstrong, and–yes–Clawtron on numerous occasions.

It's the 70th Anniversary of Captain America's debut and we're celebrating by beginning a bold new direction. A forgotten portrait of Captain America, painted in the waning days of World War II, brings up nearly forgotten memories of those turbulent and frightening years for Steve Rogers-memories of yearning, of loss and of innocence betrayed, brought to you by legendary writer/artist Howard Chaykin. Captain America falls under the vampiric Baron Blood's spell in an untold tale of the Invaders! Plus: Steve Rogers: Super-Soldier, and the Secret Avengers investigate a modern day Hitler! 104 PGS./Rated T+

Flashback Friday – Clawtron

Every Friday, I'll post a little look into my childhood. Maybe together we can figure out why I'm so messed up.

If one of my childhood toys could be ranked as "most played with," it would be Clawtron. He didn't come with a detailed back story. He had no cartoon or comic book. His origins had to be surmised from the package art. Maybe that's why I liked him so much. Over the years, he was a Shogun Warrior pilot, a top-secret commando, and even a villain… but he eventually was granted cosmic power and became the leader of the Star Blazers (yeah, I know) in their battle against X-Ray Man and the Manticore. Clawtron's headquarters (where he parked his Shogun Warrior) was in a black hole (which was a darkened hallway in my house lit by a red night light). Clawtron was part of the Adventure People line of toys. They were great action figures and imagination builders that I only really came to appreciate years later.

The Sixth Gun Art Exhibit and Trade Release Party (and a Conundrum)

In just a couple of weeks, Brian and I will be heading to Challengers Comics in Chicago for a two-day event to celebrate the release of the trade paperback edition of The Sixth Gun: Cold Dead Fingers! If you're in the area (or close enough to make the trip) I hope to see you there! Here are a few details…

Art exhibition and signing at The Rogues Gallery

January 14th at 7:00pm – Art Opening, refreshments will be served, cocktail attire requested

January 15th at Noon – Signing and Discussion

Graphic novels are a combination of literature and art, so why shouldn't a graphic novel event be the same? Challengers Comics + Conversation presents THE SIXTH GUN weekend: a Friday evening opening with artist Brian Hurtt and writer Cullen Bunn, then a noon signing on Saturday with both creators.

Just as THE SIXTH GUN crosses genres, this unique event crosses mediums, and celebrates not just the art or the writing, but the comic as a whole.

As I read the event details, though, a couple of things jump out at me: "Fancy dress" and "cocktail attire." Now, I'm not sure, but my definition of cocktail attire may be a little different than the public-at-large. For me, cocktail attire is similar to this:

But I don't think that's gonna fly at a gen-u-ine art gallery!

So, I have to put some thought into how I'm gonna dress fancily.

My first inclination was, "Hey! A monacle always fancies up a wardrobe." But, being that I have no hair, I was afraid I'd come across like this guy:

And I don't wanna be associated with a Facist super-villain.

Or maybe I could try some Scott Pilgrim cosplay, dressing as my favorite character, Matthew Patel!

But is the "pirate look" ever really in? I don't think so.

So, then I got to thinking… since The Sixth Gun is a Western, maybe I should sport some fancy Western attire. A hat! A hat is always fancy!

Grrr, baby. Grrr!

Hmm… That's sexy, sure. But fancy? To fancy it up a bit, I might need a swanky bolo tie!

But if I'm gonna go for a bolo tie, I might as well do the whole cowboy tux…

But, when compared to that picture, I'll never be able to pull off that look to my wife's satisfaction.

Besides, I want my tuxedo to have super-powers, like Jackie Chan's.

So, I guess something like this is always an option…

I'm still unsure, though. What do you think, gang? Do you have any terrific suggestions? Here's your chance to play dress up with a real, live Cullen Bunn doll. Don't screw it up!

A Few Reviews of The Sixth Gun #7

I'll admit I was a little nervous going into the second arc of The Sixth Gun. It's a bit of a departure from the first six issues, and I wasn't sure how that would sit with readers.  But some reviews are rolling in, and it seems like folks liked the book!

"…This is a great issue that not only acts as a coda to the last arc, but works as some effective set-up for act two. Bravo." – Newsarama Bestshot: http://www.newsarama.com/comics/Best-shots-rapid-reviews-101223.html

"'The Sixth Gun' just keeps getting better, and this issue is no exception. Bunn and Hurtt have created a modern comic book classic for us to read, month after month. I love that I never know quite what to expect, other than it delivering a satisfying dose of entertainment. If you're not reading "The Sixth Gun" you're missing out on one of the best series of the year. Check it out." -CBR 4/5 Stars http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=user_review&id=3002

"I absolutely love this book. In a completely over saturated market, it manages to take several classic storytelling tropes and weaves them together into something entirely unique. Just like five issues ago, I can't anticipate the next issue more." -Multiversity Comics 9.3/10 http://www.multiversitycomics.com/2010/12/advance-review-sixth-gun-7.html

The Sixth Gun #9 and #10

Here's a look at Brian Hurtt's fantastic covers for The Sixth Gun #9 and #10!

First up… now with more sub-text… issue 9!

Nature itself revolts as a fiendish new enemy makes a play against Becky, Drake, and Gord… and the goal is to leave no man or woman alive! Plus, the budding romance between Becky and the charming gunslinger Kirby Hale heats up… but is Becky setting herself up for disaster?

Next, we have the Universal Monster-esque cover of issue 10! This, by the way, may be my favorite cover yet.

A band of monks arrive in New Orleans, and it's unclear if they're with or against Drake and company. One thing's certain–they want the Six. But a low-down thief has sights on stealing the mystic pistols just as a powerful spirit unleashes a terrifying assault on our heroes.

A Sneak Peek at Things to Come!

On his site, Jeremy Haun posted a very quick sneak peek at a project he's been working on for a little while. I'm sharing it with you here, too. Now, you might wonder why I'd share some of Haun's artwork for this hush-hush project. Do I need a reason besides the sheer awesomeness of the work? I do? Well, let's just say this project has been on my mind for a while, and I don't think I've ever been able to even hint at it… until now.

Write Comics Like a Man!

(The title of this post is shamelessly stolen from Mike Oliveri.)

Newsarama posted a writing-focused interview with me a few days ago. Now's your chance to read a bunch of mumbo jumbo about how I write comics.
