Book Review: A Crown of Swords
A Crown of Swords by Robert JordanMy rating: 3 of 5 stars
This book was a noticeable dip in the series for me. I think the biggest problem I had with it was that the conflicts of the series seemed to drastically change with this book. For one thing, the Forsaken take a dramatic turn for the worse, going into hiding much more. Yes, Sammael is still there, and you've got some machinations by Moghedien and others, but there just wasn't a big enough oomph for my tastes. Even the climax of the book f

Review: Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day
I don't know if I'm the only one out there who didn't really have this movie come up on my radar (admittedly, it's not the sort of movie I really seek out information on), but if you haven't heard of it either, allow me to introduce you to Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day. I'm a bit at a loss for how to describe it, except as excellent. It's part romantic comedy, part period piece, part screwball comedy, part . . . something else. The basic premise is simple: a woman (Frances McDormand) in depress

Migraine
It's been over four years since I had one. That streak ended today. Still feeling blown away by it--nasty little bugger. I'll try to be up to posting tomorrow.

EPCOT Nostalgia
Yesterday I stumbled across some YouTube videos that really brought me back in time. I used to go to Disney World a lot. Like, multiple times a year some years. I know all the rides, had the scripts for the shows memorized--that sort of thing. And a lot of the classic rides never change. But a lot of the EPCOT rides change quite a bit, since they're so based in "the future." There are rides that I grew up with that no longer exist.

Realization: I am Getting Older
You'd think that this is a conclusion I would have come to a bit sooner in life. I mean, does it really take 30 years to figure out that you're getting older? Well, I suppose this particular realization was more along the lines of "I will not always be young." How did it happen? I renewed my World of Warcraft account. It had been over two years, and I was eager to dive right in, but then something happened.
I couldn't get the newfangled controls to work.
That's right--I said newfangled. That's a l

World of Warcraft's Siren Song
Okay, peoples. I'll admit it: I'm reconsidering World of Warcraft. For those of you who don't know, I was hooked on that game for about three years of my life. Totally loved it. It wasn't like I was playing it 24/7 or anything, but I played it and only it to the exclusion of other games. I've been off the juice for about two years now, and I think that if I got back on, I could keep it in check--not go too overboard. I don't know why it's suddenly popped back into my "List of Stuff I'd Like to D

Adventures in Roofing
A month or two ago, a shingle flew off our roof. Well, it didn't literally fly--shingles can't do that, you know. But it was blown by the wind. And so I took out the trusty binoculars and peered up at the place it had left empty, and I decided that it looked okay. There was another layer of shingles beneath that, so . . . fine. Then, to be thorough, I went up the to attic to see if it dripped at all while it rained. It didn't. Problem solved.
Then, a few days ago, it was pouring. Really coming do

General Busy-ness
I don't have much for you all today. Just an observation that there are times in life when you just get busy. Profound, I know. But the fact is that a lot of the business I have in my life is self-imposed. I certainly don't have to persist in my writing habit. Blogging is a voluntary thing. I spend a lot more time doing church activities than I really have to. I'm trying to practice the piano again--that takes time. But at the same time, if I didn't have these goals--writing, piano, guitar, Slov

Movie Review: Hancock and the Deus Ex Wrench
DKC and I watched Hancock together last night, and I have to say that my reaction is pretty mixed. I've read the same thing from many reviews--that the film is essentially schizophrenic, consisting of two entirely different movies that sort of have been lumped together. They just happen to share the same actors and general subject matter. And I'd have to say that those reviews are right. You have what amounts to a film that promises to be one thing, then ends up being something entirely differen

Swimming Lessons
TRC had his first swimming lesson today, and he thoroughly enjoyed it. They just did the basics--worked on blowing bubbles, walking like alligators, kicking. I'm afraid he might have inherited some of my lack of coordination, but I think he'll be able to pull through just fine. :-) Here's a picture of the happy boy.

In other news, my bathroom is now officially painted. It took an entire Saturday, but I'm very pleased with the result. On the other hand, I also discovered a leak in my rook that nig
