World of Warcraft's Siren Song
Okay, peoples. I'll admit it: I'm reconsidering World of Warcraft. For those of you who don't know, I was hooked on that game for about three years of my life. Totally loved it. It wasn't like I was playing it 24/7 or anything, but I played it and only it to the exclusion of other games. I've been off the juice for about two years now, and I think that if I got back on, I could keep it in check--not go too overboard. I don't know why it's suddenly popped back into my "List of Stuff I'd Like to D

Adventures in Roofing
A month or two ago, a shingle flew off our roof. Well, it didn't literally fly--shingles can't do that, you know. But it was blown by the wind. And so I took out the trusty binoculars and peered up at the place it had left empty, and I decided that it looked okay. There was another layer of shingles beneath that, so . . . fine. Then, to be thorough, I went up the to attic to see if it dripped at all while it rained. It didn't. Problem solved.
Then, a few days ago, it was pouring. Really coming do

General Busy-ness
I don't have much for you all today. Just an observation that there are times in life when you just get busy. Profound, I know. But the fact is that a lot of the business I have in my life is self-imposed. I certainly don't have to persist in my writing habit. Blogging is a voluntary thing. I spend a lot more time doing church activities than I really have to. I'm trying to practice the piano again--that takes time. But at the same time, if I didn't have these goals--writing, piano, guitar, Slov

Movie Review: Hancock and the Deus Ex Wrench
DKC and I watched Hancock together last night, and I have to say that my reaction is pretty mixed. I've read the same thing from many reviews--that the film is essentially schizophrenic, consisting of two entirely different movies that sort of have been lumped together. They just happen to share the same actors and general subject matter. And I'd have to say that those reviews are right. You have what amounts to a film that promises to be one thing, then ends up being something entirely differen

Swimming Lessons
TRC had his first swimming lesson today, and he thoroughly enjoyed it. They just did the basics--worked on blowing bubbles, walking like alligators, kicking. I'm afraid he might have inherited some of my lack of coordination, but I think he'll be able to pull through just fine. :-) Here's a picture of the happy boy.
In other news, my bathroom is now officially painted. It took an entire Saturday, but I'm very pleased with the result. On the other hand, I also discovered a leak in my rook that nig

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
I saw Harry Potter 6 last night, and I really enjoyed it. 3.5 stars from me. I mean, it was still a Harry Potter movie, meaning that it wasn't exactly High Cinema, but I was really impressed that it felt more like a movie to me than a Harry Potter movie. Does that make sense? I mean, the movie was good enough to stand on its own feet instead of having to rely on people having read the book or seen the others. The Quidditch scene, for example, was about character first and Quidditch third or four

The IT Crowd and Michael Jackson + Freddie Mercury
Not much time today to post, but I wanted to give a shout out to one of my new favorite comedies: The IT Crowd. It's a British sitcom about an IT department at a business firm, and it's pretty much hilarious. DKC and I have been having a great time watching the first two series on Netflix streaming. Not sure how available it is if you're not a Netflixer, but it's worth tracking down. Very funny stuff.
And because I thought these were cool, here's an unreleased Michael Jackson/Freddie Mercury duet

Review: Lord of Chaos

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This is another book in the series that I had to change my rating for. By memory, I had given it three stars, but now having read it again, I changed that to a four star review--really more of a four and a half star book for me. Why had I rated it three stars to begin with? Likely because it suffered from what I refer to as the I-State Syndrome. You know--Indiana, Illinois, Iowa. Everybody knows they're there, but unless you grew up there o

South Pacific and Racism
DKC and I spent 2 hours and 47 minutes of our lives yesterday to watch South Pacific, the classic Rogers and Hammerstein production done back in 1958. If you're into classic movie musicals, then you've no doubt seen this one. If you're not, then you probably have little desire to watch it. I'll say this much: I enjoyed the film, but parts of it really dragged, and I felt like the characters were severely underdeveloped in most cases. Still, the music saves it and earns it its 3 star rating.

The Trouble with Taking a Week Off
Is that you have a week's worth of work waiting for you when you come back. Sigh. Hopefully tomorrow I'll have a bit to write out a good blog entry. Today, I'll be lucky to keep my sanity.
