My Apologies for Not Posting
I've been too busy throwing up the last two days to be able to muster the effort needed to really come up with a good blog post. Note to self: be careful of conference food. If the cheese tastes funny, don't eat it.
That is all.
Oh--except I did notice that June 20th is free RPG day. There are no participating stores in Maine. There is a participating store in Provo. Anyone feel like picking me up some free swag?

When Reality Meets Celluloid
Last night DKC and I watched Rescue Dawn, a flick "based on a true story" about a US fighter pilot who got shot down in Laos during the Vietnam War, was taken prisoner, and then escaped. It stars Christian Bale and is directed by Werner Herzog, so it's got a good pedigree. The film itself was enjoyable, but something felt off to me throughout it. I kept being very aware of the fact that this was a movie--the characters didn't seem consistent . . . I don't know. It's hard for me to put a finger o

Book Review: The Shadow Rising

My review
rating: 5 of 5 stars
As I've been reading through these books, I'm seeing a couple of things. First of all, I think I'd been too inundated with the "Jordan's books never have anything that happens" arguments over the years. I'd retroactively given this book three stars, mainly because I looked at the cover and couldn't quite remember what happened in this one. Since it didn't stand out to me, I figured it must not have been all that great. Naturally

Book Release: Warbreaker
For all you fantasy fans out there, in case you weren't aware of it, my good friend Brandon Sanderson just came out with a very rare type of fantasy book: a standalone novel. Yes, that's right. It begins and ends within one cover. Actually, this is a book he's released in drafts over the web for the past year or two, and it's just now that Tor is releasing it in hardback. You can see Brandon's post about it here, where he includes handy links to the book online, as well as gives a summary of it

A Movie to Avoid (Unless You Really Want to be Depressed)
Seven Pounds--This is a very well made film, with great acting jobs, wonderful direction . . . and a profoundly dark, depressing theme. SPOILER ALERT: I think it's safe for me to spoil this film for you, since I don't recommend it, and it's been out for forever, and it's totally predictable anyway. So here goes: Will Smith plays a character who checked his text messages while driving, thereby causing an accident that resulted in the death of his wife and six other people. He feels so terrible ab

The Tonys
Last night was the Tonys. (Or should that be 'were the Tonys'? Sigh.) Don't know if any of you out there caught them or not, but I watch the Tonys and Oscars pretty religiously. And last night was pretty okay, I suppose. On the one hand, they had microphone issues throughout the evening--especially on their opening number, where at times you couldn't really hear what people were singing. (And while I suppose that's understandable--it was a huge number, and there were tons of people to be mic'ed-

Review: The Dragon Reborn

My review
rating: 5 of 5 stars
This was one of the books in the WoT series that I remembered best, even years later. (Actually, a large part of that might have to do with the fact that this is the last Recognizable Cover for me in the series. From here on out, they were pretty much interchangeable, as I recall.) In any case, perhaps because I remembered this book so well, it didn't quite have the same oomph I recalled. Some of this is likely due to the fact t

GoodReads Author and Auction Update
Two items of interest for ya'll today. First, I'm now an official GoodReads author. Of course, this wasn't too terribly difficult to do--I just contacted GoodReads, revealed my secret identity (Albert Packard), and they took care of the rest. So I've got a whole spiffy profile page now. Maybe one day I'll use it for something--I guess I can put up writing samples, Q&A stuff and the like--but for now, it's fun just having it there.
And in other news, after much research, I identified an auction pi

So Long, David Eddings
Read about one of my favorite childhood authors, David Eddings, dying last night. Well, maybe not "childhood," but at least "early teenage years." His were the first "modern fantasy" books that I read, and I loved them to death. And sure, looking back at them, today's fantasy readers can sort of dismiss them casually. The Belgariad, Mallorean, Elenium, Tamuli--yes, they seem to blend together after a while, and the same plot devices and character types are used, but you know what? That's where f

E3 and the Evolution of Video Games
So I've been watching the three console makers' press conferences at this year's E3, and it's been an interesting experience. For those of you who don't know, E3 is the annual video game conference in LA, where big announcements are made as to the direction that video games will be heading in the future. I've been pretty much a lifelong gamer, starting with the Atari 2600 and Game n Watch, moving on the original Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, Playstation 2, Ga
