"A terrifying image flashed through my mind of Apollo in bell-bottoms and a slinky shirt."

Editing mistakes are usually just annoying. But I find some, every now and then, which make me laugh. Like the one I found yesterday while I was editing.

"Don't all Air Pirates know how to fry?"
 Hm...maybe...

With me yammering on and on about my blog party - and now finally having a moment where I am free of editing - I thought I should better explain the main reason for holding it.
When I finally got serious about wanting to publish my sister, who has a head for marketing schemes and an understanding as to how all this works, sat me down and gave me the facts straight. "Get your name out there. Get active in the internet word."
The very idea of this scared me. The things she suggested terrified me. Blog frequently? What if I didn't have that much to say, day after day? Surely my posts would get boring if I did them five days a week. Use...Twitter?! That weird updating thing which had so many people talking? Become active on Facebook again? Facebook, the local gossip page where people go to complain. My sister was insane for suggesting all this, I thought. Even worse when she said to get into contact with authors and do...MARKETING RESEARCH! (I could have had a heart attack at this point.) Besides, my book wasn't even finished yet. What was the point of talking about a book still being written.
Thankfully, I trust my sister and slowly did what she said. I started a blog, a serious one - okay, so it isn't SERIOUS...but it's official. You can't have everything. I set up Twitter and spent a month stumbling around in the dark on there. I made a Facebook fan page. (I didn't even have any fans. A fan page?) And I did something I dreaded. I read others blogs and commented, worrying I would end up sounding like an idiot. "Hi, my name is Jack. Very nice post....um...so, do you like coffee?" Oh yes, and I posted. Over and over - and usually my posts weren't that great. Kind of like the comments.  "My name is Jack. I am writing a book. You should read my blog because this book is interesting. Do you like coffee?"
I also contacted authors. Yes, I emailed them. And not just little known authors. No, I went after the famous ones. (See how much I trust my sister.) My emails were very much like the comments and posts. During this time I was going with traditional publishing. So I usually said something like, "Hi, my name is Jack. I am writing a book. Can I have the name of your agent?" Shockingly enough, none of these famous authors laughed at me. In fact, two were very helpful - two I've mentioned before. Arthur Slade and Philip Reeve. They took the time to answer my email, AND add helpful hints. "When sending a query letter, here is what I found helps."
I also followed authors on Twitter and I still talk with them. They too have given me a lot of helpful advice, as well as just being a great support.
And I say all of that to say this.
It is NEVER too early to start getting people interested in your work. I won't claim to have everything worked out, all the answers, or a huge following, but I am WAY ahead of where I started from. When I first began this blog the ONLY one who read it for at least a couple of months was my sister. Kind of discouraging. (Yet sweet. She would even comment just to give me a boast.) It took a lot of hard work to get my site what it is today. It was a ton of work - anyone who claims it is easy needs their heads checked.) One must put in time and effort. If you are serious about your writing start now. Talk to other bloggers, read their posts, take an interest in them. (You might even meet some great friends.)
And now, to my point. With the Blog Party I am hosting, I am hoping to give some of you a chance to get word out about your book. As I said, it is never too early to start, even if your book is still being written. Mine was when I first set up my blog, and I wasn't even sure it would end up being the book I published. (You have my Artist to thank for it coming out.)
Now, I can only hope that made some sense. Listen to me, giving writing advice as if I know what I'm talking about.
Also, before I go, I have another update with the book. I spent the better part of an hour adjusting Clair's amazing pictures so they will look best in the book. (I will not even go into how annoying positioning pictures is. Aye, it is very worth it - these are Clair's drawings after all! But it is still a pain in the neck. They didn't want to do what I wanted them to.) However, I finished the ones I have, and I also fixed up the formatting. Now I just have to send it in for a review, then order my copy to make sure it looks nice when not on a computer.
And, that is all. For now.
 Allons-y! I have NaNo tomorrow - hopefully.

November 6, 2012

"For some reason he and Annabeth had visited a spa and decided to destroy it. He couldn't imagine why."

(I will explain this more later, but if you are a writer even if you have yet to finish a book, you may enter my Book Blog Party! And it no longer matters how you plan to publish. Read more HERE!)

I mentioned to all of you in a post, I don't remember which, my Hermits United plan. Spending one day, I got my word count high so I could take most of this week to finish editing. Thankfully, I finished today. Which is VERY good because I was one step away from slipping back to my editing state and forgetting my socks again.
So, yes, you read that right. Haphazardly Implausible has gone through it's last, I believe edit! I am very happy about this fact, and very nervous because I am now that much closer to publishing. (Also, I have to set up all the technical payment stuff and the numbers are doing their jig. I hate numbers and payments and Math and adding and subtracting and all that. It is worse then dancing on a cactus - which I've done before.) Thankfully my mum is going to help with all that. She's good at this stuff.
To celebrate the last edit, John and I finished Terra Nova. I liked it so much I would buy the whole season if I had, you know, money. I am very sad they didn't make another season.
All of that aside for now though. I might end up writing a review on the show, but that will be later when I figure out how my posts are going to work from now on.
Right now, I wanted to start a bit of a review on a book I've been reading. (When I finish the book it will get a proper review, but I wanted to share things from it now.) I think I mentioned this book before. It is called Seraphina and hasn't been out very long, which surprised me.

I've mentioned a lot about cliche characters which are appearing in fiction. When I read the plot for this book I thought Seraphina and Kiggs (the hero who happens to be a prince) would end up being the same. A girl who is half dragon. She will be bold and daring and snap the head off of any fellow who tries to help her. A prince, he will be stuck up, know it all, and think he is better than anyone else. Both these characters surprised me.
First off, the story is from Phina's point of view. I don't like reading books where the character tells the story. It usually irks me. However, this one is done wonderfully well and I've not minded one bit.
(Oh right, I should give a fast summery of the book. Phina is a half dragon, which means were anyone to find out no one would accept her. The dragons would think her a shame and shun her and the humans would fear her. Phina does her best to keep to herself, but this becomes tricky when the kingdom learns how well she can play music. Then, to make matters worse, she meets the prince, Kiggs - who is kind of like her because his mum married someone her family didn't like so they kind of, kicked her out of the family or something. Being on friendly terms with a prince makes keeping to oneself tricky - solving a mystery with him, impossible. And when the prince is very clever  and isn't happy till he gets to the bottom of everything, you're in trouble)
Phina is everything the cliche character is not. First off, she has a good reason for wishing to be alone. A VERY good reason. But she doesn't sit in a corner and pout. Instead, she does what she enjoys and when the musicians she is supposed to help bug her she will yell at them - though she's not very threatening and they usually just giggle at her. Second, she is shy. Not the, she won't talk shy, but the she isn't used to people and doesn't know the proper things to say. At one point she insults the prince to his face. He's a good sport about it - but more on him later. So, not only does she not going about feeling sorry for herself, Phina also has personality. She is complex and sweet, YES! Sweet! I didn't think people wrote about sweet girls anymore. She cares for others and she has a sense of humor. (I didn't think that existed in books either.) Some of her students make up a song about her in one part and instead of getting offended she thinks it is kind of them and joins in the fun with them. She is by far the best female character I think I've ever read. She isn't typical, which I love.
Then there is Kiggs. Prince Lucain Kiggs is for some reason accepted by his family even though his mum shamed them. Maybe it is because he is constantly reminded of her shame that he isn't a snob. Yet, like Phina, he doesn't feel sorry for himself. His mum is sneered at and he is sometimes mocked, but he does his duty without looking for pity. He goes through life, sticking his nose into everything and making people laugh. (Yes, he has a sense of humor as well and enjoys Phina's mishaps at being social. Also, he is very kind to her, treating her as an equal and not a lowly peasant.) I think what I like best about Kiggs is he thinks of himself as human. He doesn't think he is anything special to be bowed down to and such. He is happy to mix with the commoners, sharing the local gossip, all while keeping peace in the city. If he weren't the prince I could see him as a prankster - though he is almost too kind to pull off many pranks. Also, shocker, he is manly. He's not a wimp who hides behind women. He is brave and he isn't the typical dashing one expects in princes. I get the impression he is common looking and it is his character people notice first.
All of that said, I am greatly enjoying this book and can see why so many have been talking about it. At the moment I would highly recommend it, warning though, I'm only halfway through. So if you read it and find something not so great at the ending, well, sorry I couldn't warn you.
And now I am going to end this, because it has turned out very long. Sorry about that...I try to keep my posts at a nice, shorter length. Now I am going for real. But first, what are you Hermits United counts? And have you ever read a book with characters who defy cliche?
 Allons-y!

November 5, 2012

"'Great,' I thought, 'We just blowtorched a National Monument.'"

As I mentioned yesterday, I am doing a blog fest today! This was put together by TARA and VIKKI and is the Thankful for my Readers Blog Fest.
So, today, I get to tell all of you thank you. And I get to tell it in some clever, witty way. Most of my clever and wit (what little I had) has been eaten by editing. But I am going to try my best at it.
 Ahem.
I feel as if I have a special group of readers. I am sure every blogger feels this, but I KNOW you all are special. I don't know how many readers would put up with my editing posts, or the ones I write when my brain isn't completely here but asleep on some island without me. (Not only do you read them, you comment on them. Which means you all are as weird as I, or close to it.)
Instead of calling the Funny Farm on me and getting me put in a straight jacket, you keep me around - maybe for my book, maybe because I make you laugh. But it is nice to know there are people out there who don't find my lack of normality disturbing.
You've been cheering me on, making me believe I can do something as impossible as publish a book. You don't throw things at me when I draw things like the trailer out - though I got the impression some of you wanted to.
And I think you are all grand and amazing and I am glad you are my readers. So thank you for coming back, over and over, and commenting and getting excited with me and annoyed with me, and being wonderfully cool. I'd give you all chocolate - except John ate it all.
Today seems like a good day to do something I don't normally do.
I don't normally share snippets of my writing. I suppose the main reason behind this is I like to be top secret and keep you all guessing. Also, I find that when people share snippets without the book being out yet I moan and whine because I want to read more but can't. So maybe I am saving you un-do torture. Hm...maybe I should post more snippets then...
Anyways, torture aside. Since it is Hermits United and I am just writing a book for fun - though I might publish it someday - I suppose some snippets would be all right. So here you are, a snippet!
Hugh ran his hands over the railing, an almost idiotic grin on his face. “I'm in-”“Amazement over it,” Trisli growled, “we know.”“Someone isn't a morning person,” Alyce said.“He's not much of an afternoon or evening person either,” Hugh added, sounding slightly irritated.“My coffee will fix that!” Alyce exclaimed.“Your coffee made it worse,” Trisli grumbled. He dumped the last of it out, watching some of the grinds fall of the ground. “Tomorrow morning I am going to teach you how to make real coffee.”“No you're not.” Alyce placed her hands on her hips, challenging him.“Oh yeah?” he snapped.“Yes.”“What makes you think I can't make coffee?” he demanded.“I believe you can make it,” Alyce spread her hands wide in innocence, “I just don't think you can make it in the morning.”“Why?” he asked, now slightly curious.“You won't be up in time!” Hugh and Alyce exclaimed together and burst out laughing.
Warning, it is a very rough draft, just written. So pardon the many mistakes and choppiness. This is Hermits United after all.

I have other news as well.

As I said, today I will be telling you when the short stories book will be out. I am going to say the 16th. Hopefully everything will go as planned and it will be out then. But, just to warn you, don't hold your breath just yet.

There is a book giveaway! You should check it out! HERE.

Also, I have been thinking about my Blog Party a lot lately. I got to thinking, it shouldn't matter how a book is going to be published. It doesn't matter when it is going to come out. I know what it is like, just starting out, and how hard it is to get word out about your book. Therefore, I am changing another rule.
It doesn't matter how you plan to publish or when. If you are just starting out, like I was almost a year ago, then send me an email. If you want to tell others about your book, planned, being written, or written, you can enter the party. If you plan to Indie-publish or Traditional. It doesn't matter! All the details are HERE

Now, I should probably go. I am half way through editing and should do some more tonight. (I worked on my word count all day, getting it up to 10,000 so I can go at it slower this week and concentrate more on editing. Hopefully this plan works.)

Allons-y! And thanks for putting up with my Percy Jackson quotes! I've great news! I have the Mark of Athena. YES! It is all MINE! So, you still have to put up with Percy Jackson quotes, but some are likely going to be from the new book. MY NEW BOOK!!

 Au Revoir now.

"What about a compromise? I'll kill them first, and if it turns out they were friendly, I'll apologize."

I'm very busy today so this is me running through like Percy with the giant after him.
Tomorrow I will be doing a blog fest. This is a blog fest for all of you, my readers.
Tomorrow I will also announce when the short story collection will be out. (Hint, I will be publishing it this month so if you are waiting for it, this next bit might not apply to you much.)
Today Reveille is out! You can buy it on Smashwords. Or you can wait for the paperback edition. (The paperback WILL be out before the book, so those of you who want can read the short stories before you read the actual book.) Reveille is now HERE.
Cover picture taken by William Knisley at WKPhotography. I highly suggest you have a look around his site. You can find it HERE
And now I have to keep running. Giants and all.

Hermits United word count is at 6018. I think I am behind but am hoping I can keep caught up.

Editing I am on chapter fourteen. Hopefully I can finish this week so I can polish the final stages of formatting next week.
 Allons-y!

November 3, 2012

"'I'm fine!' Percy yelled out as he ran by, followed by a giant screaming bloody murder."

I need a new way to remind everyone about the Blog Book Party...
Here ye, Here ye! Have you written a book? Are you planning on indie-publishing it?Are you writing a book and planning on indie-publishing it?Then now is your chance to tell others about it!
Never mind, that sounds like I am announcing a circus. COME SEE THE BEARDED WOMAN AND THE SWORD SWALLOWING MAN!
I think I will just stick to the way I've been doing it. I have a Blog Book Party coming up! Entries are very welcome, and needed. So far I have four. You can learn more about it HERE. I even have a button for it, if you can figure out how to get it to work.
My NaNo count is likely behind. I am at 4268. I like the beginning of the story, but I hit something of a wall yesterday and have been editing all day so haven't even attempted to get around it. Sometimes I hate starting the adventures. I like better to throw the characters right in so they don't have a chance to realize what is happening. Like I did with Peter. "Oh, by the way," *tosses* "have fun!"
Normally I would be panicking about my low word count but editing is my main priority this month and if I try and push word counts I might break something - like my head.
The real reason I am posting today has nothing to do with word counts and parties. I am posting to remind everyone that I will be releasing another short story on Monday. (And for those of you who do not like e-books, you needn't fear because when the third short story is out I will be publishing all three in a special paperback edition.)
The story coming out Monday is titled Reveille and shows some of the things Peter and Tony liked to do while on Base - such as tormenting people. This story will NOT be needed to understand what is going on in the book, but is just for fun.  I will now remind you that Lisbeth's Choice is a prequel and was published so that you might understand better what is happening in the book. (Not saying that you HAVE to buy it, just giving you a heads up.)
I'm also considering releasing the paperback, short story collection this month. Thoughts on this? Would you like to see it more this month or next?
And that is all. You will get to see the Reveille cover on Monday - because I like to be evil like that. And, in 11 days, the trailer!
Now I am going to get back to my editing.
 ALLONS-Y!

"Unfair? You can breath underwater and blow up glaciers and summon hurricanes and it's unfair I can be an elephant?"

My name is Trisili. I am fifteen and I am a DragonSlayer.
 You are not!
That was Hugh, my sometimes best friend as he likes to call himself. He is sixteen and has a thing called morals, which I find a waste of time.
I have a thing called honesty, thank you very much!
 He is also incurably dull.
 Not as dull as you.
And THAT is Alyce...and I really have no way to describe her.
I am a dazzlingly, talented girl who is very clever and knows more about fighting then you.
I thought you had a thing against lairs.
 That wasn't a lie.
 If you say so...
Weren't you going to say something, Trisli?
Oh yes, right! We three are the main characters in DragonSlayer. Well, I am the main character, those two just tag along to try and steal the spot light. They do a rather soddy job of it.
As if you could tell a story without us. You would still be in Village if it wasn't for me!
Someone needs a good dose of humility.
 *Arches eyebrows*
 I meant Alyce.
I won't even lower myself to your level to reply to that.
 What?
Since Trisli apparently only intends to use this post to brag about himself I shall take over and tell you why we are here, on Jack's computer. As Trisli hinted at, my name is Alyce. I am one of the king's messengers and he has assigned me the task of traveling into the Wild with Trisli to help him in slaying the last Dragon in the land of Myste.
I don't need your help in slaying the dragon! I am the last DragonSlayer after all!
You're a story teller who thinks too highly of himself.
 Shut up, Hugh.
As I was saying before these boys so rudely cut in.
 Sorry.
The three of us are off on a quest to slay a dragon. I could go on and on about dragons but I shan't bore you with such details. Instead, I will say that we are certain to have many adventures, some of which are likely to be very life threatening since Trisli has no clue what he is doing.
LAST DRAGONSLAYER! I know perfectly well what I am doing!
Trisli, if you grab your sword below the hilt you will cut your hand - again.
I wasn't going to pull it out anyways.
I think Jack needs to re-title this book. I think a more fitting name for it would be Hugh and Alyce, babysitters.
 Why you-
Over the next few weeks, Alyce, Trisli, and I will be updating on here sometimes for Jack, thus allowing her more time for her writing and editing. This post was supposed to be an introduction. However, since Alyce and Trisli are now fighting in the corner I think it would be best if we just ended it. I do apologize for my unruly companions. They don't exactly get along - not that many people are able to get along with Trisli.
I do hope you enjoy our little updates, as well as your own Hermits United journeys.
Jack has asked that we end every post by asking what all of your word counts are. And I know I speak on behalf of my companions that we would all enjoy to hear what your books are about, as well as meet some of your characters if they would like to stop by.
Hoping you all avoid writer's block and dragons,
 Hugh
 Trisli
 Alyce

How come Hugh got to put his name first?

"Why do you need to gallop while you fly?"

Well, today is the day. And I have been sitting here for an hour, trying to think of the best way to delay this just to be an evil author. Hopefully this doesn't mean I am failing in the evil author area.
Maybe, just this once though, I should be kind. I've dragged it out for a long while as it is. And in a few minutes Hermits United starts and I plan to write a little before I fall asleep.
I guess a little kindness won't ruin my reputation too badly...considering I am still putting off revealing the trailer.
 So, here I go.
 The book cover.
And I really need to end this, because I now only have ten minutes to Hermits United.
And John really wants to start his book.
Which means I will need to give him the computer.
Which means I cannot be posting.
 And, for reals now.
May I present to you the cover of Haphazardly Implausible, book one. Coming out December 14th.

 TADA!

There. Was it worth the wait? What are your thoughts on it? And, what are your word counts?

Okay, I have to go now. John is begging for the computer.

"Which one is me?" "That little deformed one?" "Oh, shut up."

Tomorrow is it, the first day of NaNo! Other wise known as Hermits United. And tonight is a NaNo/ Hermit party for anyone interested in coming. (Not sure what we will be doing during the party, except try and keep each other awake I suppose.) But if anyone wants to join in, be sure and send me an email and I will send you the chat link, those who don't already have it that is.

 Also, links again.

BLOG PARTY! I got another entry, but there is still time for others to join in.

Okay, so that is the only link...

But, I am still open to interviews and questions, for me, characters, and John.

And that is it for today. Tomorrow...well, tomorrow, I shall have something more interesting for you.

October 30, 2012

"If Annabeth's mother was Athena then why didn't Annabeth know better than to fall off a cliff?"

I thought it was time to do a proper post. Only, I'm not even sure I know how to do those anymore. Actually, I'm just too tired to even try and think how to do a proper one. If I ever did a proper one, that is.
Lately, I've been having...I'm not even sure what to call them. Reality checks? Though, since I've never lived in reality, I'm not sure what a reality check is. Do people get them often? And do they live through them? They sound scary, like spiders and Weeping Angels, and those little sprinkles you get in your sprinkles and you are dead certain it isn't a sprinkle but you know it is bad manners to throw it across the room so you eat it anyways and hope it isn't an ant.
Okay, so reality check doesn't fit. If I got a reality check I probably wouldn't survive. But very often I will get hit with the oddest feelings. A desire to scream, laugh, and cry all at once. And then pinch myself to see if I'm awake.
I've wanted to publish a book since I was thirteen...no, it was even before that. And now I'm only a month away. Usually I don't even think about it. I am too busy getting everything ready that it doesn't get the chance to hit me. But sometimes it will slap me full force, grinning like a maniac.  "Hey! Your book will be in print soon, and lots of people will be reading it!"
Wait...people, reading it? I don't want anyone reading it! It is mine! What if they don't like it? What if they laugh and tell me to become a banker because there is no way I am going to make it as an author. What if they DO like it?! And they want more books? What do I do if I find out I can't write, and I actually do have to give it up and get a...normal...job, for the rest of my life? And so they rush about in my brain, making me wonder if I am excited about publishing or if I want to hide the book and tell all of you to go read Mr. Reeve's books instead. (Go read his anyways, you will like them.)
I'm not even sure what to think about all this. I never thought I would make it this far. I know having 62 followers doesn't seem like much to some. And getting an average of eight comments per-post likely will seem like very little to most, but to me, this is a bit staggering.  When my sister first told me that, if I did in fact want to publish I had to take it serious and should sit down and blog with the intention of telling the world about my book, I thought, "Sure. Yeah. Blog. Like that is going to help." But hey, what can I say, I have a smart sister. And all those times I wanted to give up because my posts were not even being read except by her, I thought this all very silly. (Come to think of it, without her, I probably wouldn't be here right now.) But she was right.
And what shocks me even more, is that some of you, my readers, actually seem to be looking forward to my book. My book, you want to read it. Once again, let me try not to think about that too much because it makes me too nervous.
Hm, I did have other things to say though.
First off, William has his site up, FINALLY. I never thought he'd get around to it...actually, I had to help him a little. But he put up some very nice pictures. So you should go and look, and comment and all that. (And he has a picture of a cute bird, which, since it is cute and a bird, should deserve a look at least.) (He is going to help me again this week to get another cover for the next short story I will be releasing. I am excited about this cover because it needs more of the army outfits, which I have fun putting together.) WILLIAM'S SITE
I still don't have The Mark of Athena yet. Yes, you can start to feel bad for me now.
I am at the moment trying to edit the short story I mentioned above while trying to compile it and some others into a book, which will be published in paper back form. That is later though. I can't even think about that yet, too much work.
I am also trying to prepare for NaNo. Which I'm not prepared for, AT ALL, and I think I won't be prepared for it, AT ALL. (My book this year will be an attempt at a dragon story. I must admit, I don't really have a plot, which seems all the rage this year, but I know the story will be about a young man named Trisli who is a self proclaimed Dragon Slayer...who has never slain a dragon. However, he brags about his dragon slaying a lot and when a real dragon attacks the kingdom the king naturally calls upon him for help.  Soon Trisli is traveling the kingdom with a know it all companion and his very reserved best friend. Only to later on meet the dragon, who, to Trisli's amazement, has a very strange sense of humor.) Because every story needs a dragon with a sense of humor.
Lastly, though this is not in the least last on my mind, my thoughts and prayers are with those in the middle or being affected by the hurricane. I've not been able to track it well, the only news I hear comes over the internet, but I have seen pictures of Boston flooding and my mum said a lot of people have been evacuated.  I believe some of my readers are near or in that area, and I hope all of you are well.
And now, I should probably go. So, once again,
 Allons-y

October 29, 2012

"Can you surf really well?" "Jeez, Nico, I've never really tried."

I'm worn out so I am trying to rest a few days before NaNo and the final edit of my book. (Thankfully the cover is done, as well as the trailer. After a bit of help from my mum, I was able to figure out what went wrong with the cover and fix it.)
Since I didn't work much today I don't have a post ready, so I will just share some links. Oh yes, and remind you about the Blog Book Party! There is still room to enter. Remember, I changed the rules, so there is more opportunity to enter. And, with NaNo coming up I know some of you have plans on publishing your NaNo book someday. So, you can even enter with that one. CLICK HERE to learn more.

Those who wanted to join in on the chat room, please send me a quick email and I will send you the link. (I set it up on a trusted site, one I've used many times before and have never had trouble with.)  As I said, I plan to stay up late the first day of NaNo and I know some of you said you plan to as well. So, I was thinking if you want, we could all meet at Chatzy, the chat room?
Okay, so I only have two links since I am going to email the chatzy link to those who want it. To make up for lack of links I will add this one. HERE. Because it is cool.
And that is about it. Now I'm going to bed before I start sleep typing.
 Bonne Nuit!
 Allons-y!
