Artemis, goddess of the hunt, has lived with heartache for the last fifteen hundred years, believing her only love is dead. That’s what her father—Zeus, king of the gods—told her. After recent events brought the truth to light, Artemis must gather the courage to face her lost love again.

Evangelos, former god of messengers, was content living in the mortal world until he discovered he has a daughter and her mother is Artemis. When the goddess shows up at his place of employment with tales of renewing his god status, he’s skeptical. Zeus wouldn’t reverse the curse out of the goodness of his heart. There is always a catch. The god king wants something in return.

When Artemis explains she has to hunt down her stepmother, Hera, in order to get Evan back into Zeus’s good graces, Evan demands to accompany her. However, the journey turns out to be a test that could bring them closer together or tear them apart forever.

Excerpt:

Artemis sat on a stone bench in the rose gardens outside the dragons’ home—her daughter’s new home with her mate, Tyson. Tears blurred her vision and her nose tingled, fueling her anger at herself for daring to believe for even an instant that things could be as they once were. Evan didn’t want her, not after so much time had passed. She was going on Zeus’s mission, regardless— deliver his message then return home, alone.

She sensed her daughter before she entered the small courtyard. “I saw Evangelos.”

“I know. He called.”

“He didn’t want me there.” Although she tried to contain the storm of emotions within, some of her misery leaked out in her tone, frustrating her further. It was bad enough that she ached from a rejection she should have foreseen. She should have better control than to let others, even her daughter, know of her weakness, and finding she didn’t was humbling.

Ashlynn appeared in front of her as she knelt down and took her hands. “That is not true. He’s hurting, like you. Men handle feelings different than we do.”

After a few moments, Artemis squared her shoulders. “I have to find Hera.”

“What? Why?”

She met her daughter’s concerned stare. “I have to deliver a message to her for Zeus. In exchange, Evangelos gets reinstated as a god.”

Ashlynn stood, folded her arms, and narrowed her eyes. “If you live through it. Do you even know where she is?”

“No, but I must find her.”

“Not alone, you aren’t.” The masculine voice behind her attracted her attention and Artemis jumped to her feet and whirled around to glare at Evangelos, standing a few feet away. Annoyance made her blood run cold. “You have no right to tell me what to do.”

He stepped forward, but Artemis held her ground. “Why do you get to choose how I get my godhood back? How do you know I even want it back?”

Artemis drew back, shocked. How could he not want to return home? Return to her? Pain gripped her heart like a vise, making it difficult to grasp what he tried to tell her. Had he moved on? A lump lodged in her throat.

After a moment, she turned away. “I see.”

His thick, strong arms encircled her, squeezing her tight against him. “Please don’t teleport away from this argument.”

The growl in his voice mixed with his familiar cedar scent was her undoing. It’d been too long since she’d been held by him. Turning toward him, she cupped his face. “I’ve spent the last millennia and a half believing you were dead, never seeing your smile, never hearing your voice. Now that I’ve found you, it would be unbearable for me to let you go again.”

He stared at her for a brief moment before crushing his lips to hers. Sliding her hands to his nape, she pressed her body to his and opened when he swiped his tongue along the seam of her lips. Tingles skittered over his skin, intensifying her mounting desire.

Artemis broke the kiss. She released a sigh as she rested her head against his chest. “I need to find Hera.”

Artemis’s Hunt Excerpt:

514 AD

Artemis crept through the darkening forest, her bare feet barely making a sound as she hunted her prey. The scent of damp earth and spring wildflowers filled the air. The thump, thump of her heartbeat and that of the deer hiding amongst the foliage a few feet away were the only sounds.

The doe’s head rose above the brush, her ears flickered as she carefully stepped forward. Artemis stilled, slowly pulled an arrow from her quiver and drew her bow. Before she could fire, the animal jerked her head toward Artemis, then took off in the opposite direction.

Damn. So close.

A familiar, masculine scent mixed with that of forest and earth met her nose. Annoyance bathed her, turning to anger as she twisted sharply to face the intruder. Evangelos, minor god of the messengers, stood a few feet away, his own bow at the ready. She snarled, glancing from the bow to the smug look on his face. “I thought Hermes taught his sons better manners. Don’t you know it is dangerous to sneak up on me during a hunt?”

One large, bare shoulder rose in a lazy shrug as he stalked closer. She planted her feet in place, refusing to show him any type of weakness—he would never know how her body heated when he was near, something she hadn’t experienced with any other man.

She was a pure goddess, untouched by the desires of the flesh, and she would stay that way. Not even Evangelos could change who she was or her nature.

He stopped a foot away, the heat from his virile body reaching out to her, coaxing her to come closer. “I want you to teach me to hunt.”

Steeling her spine, she narrowed her gaze at him. “You can already hunt.”

“Not like you. I want you to show me your way.”

“Why?”

He took a step nearer. She desperately wanted to move away, but giving up ground would be a sign of weakness. “Does the reason matter?”

No, it didn’t matter. She couldn’t care less why he wanted her to teach him. “What do you offer me in return?” He had to know asking a boon of her meant she’d require some sort of payment in exchange.

One corner of his mouth lifted, drawing her attention to his full lips. What was wrong with her? She must be ill. It was the only reasonable explanation for her reaction to him. When he spoke, his tone softened, almost to a whisper. “I offer my services to you during the time it takes you to teach me.”

Suspicion crawled up her spine. “What services?”

He closed the distance between them until only a breath separated them. “Anything you wish, my goddess.”

She was fully unprepared for what happened next. When his soft lips brushed hers, every nerve in her body lit up as if charged by lightning. For a moment she allowed his testing caress, but when he wrapped an arm around her waist, she broke the kiss and slapped him. The sound of the strike echoed off the trees as his head whipped to the side, thunder to emphasize the storm he’d awakened with his touch.

“Do that again and I’ll kill you,” she warned.

Get on Your High Horse: Spaghetti Western by @emlynley is Coming Soon!

I’m thrilled to share the cover and tell you about the latest installment in my Delectable Series, featuring men in the world of food and wine.  It’s fun to pair up opposites and see where the rough edges will crop up—and how they try to smooth them over. So it was a real joy to set my chef Riley Emerson, fresh from several years of working in Paris, against Colby Zane, born-and-bred cattle rancher who didn’t know a patisserie from a potholder—till he met Riley.

The fun didn’t stop there, because I set the story on the Rocking Z Ranch in Colorado. I’ve only been to the state once and it left such an impression on me that I couldn’t wait to find a story that belonged there.

And horses… yes there are quite a few in this one. The Rocking Z has been forced to bring in paying guests who come for the fresh air, gorgeous scenery and horseback riding. They certainly didn’t come for the grub, but after they hire Riley to fancy-up the menu, all that might change.

Check out the beautiful cover by LC Chase, who found me a palomino just like the one Colby rides.

SpagettiWestern_EM Lynley

Spaghetti Western, by EM Lynley

220 pages

Release date: September 17 from Dreamspinner Press

Blurb:

Cordon-Blue trained pastry chef Riley Emerson arrives in Aspen, Colorado for a summer season at the best restaurant in town, only to discover his jerk of a boyfriend has dumped him, leaving his heart and his summer plans in tatters. Doubting himself and longing for a change of pace, he takes a low-paying position as chef at a guest ranch, the Rocking Z. The scenery is gorgeous, but he expects that nature up close and personal can’t hold a candle to his exciting Paris lifestyle.

When born-and-bred cattle rancher Colby Zane spots a newcomer letting himself be pawed at by a passel of horny cowboys at Aspen’s Club Rawhide, he doesn’t think twice before rushing in, throwing the guy over his shoulder, and rescuing him from the volatile situation. Sober, Riley Emerson turns out to be sweet and sexy, but not interested in more than a one-night stand with Colby. Initially disdainful of the guest ranch side of the business, Colby’s over the moon when Riley late arrives as the new cook on his family’s ranch

But all’s not well at the Rocking Z. Unsurmountable financial problems force them to rely on a cash infusion from an outside investor, Fitz Wellington. Only Fitz is hot for Colby, and he won’t sign on the dotted line without some very personal incentives. The future of the ranch is at stake, and Colby’s just desperate enough to go along, but saving the Z might mean losing Riley.

“I’ve got an idea. Just a little change of plans.” Colby took Riley’s hand and led him into the barn. The scent of animals was only slightly countered by the grassy aroma of fresh hay. The barn had high ceilings with a row of stalls along one side, a fenced-in pen at one end, and a few rooms—probably offices—at the other end. A few weak bulbs made a feeble attempt to illuminate the space, but the gloom prevailed. Once Riley’s eyes got used to the low level of light he saw horses moving around the stalls.

Colby went into the third one and Riley waited outside while he unsaddled that horse and the one in the next stall. “We’ll take Granite instead. He’s down at the other end.”

Riley peered into the stall as Colby entered and put the bridle on the horse and led him into the aisle. He was big and stocky, and a pretty dark dappled gray. “He’s part draft horse, so he’s real sturdy.” Colby saddled him, checking the girth twice. “Hop up.”

“Uh, he’s really big.”

“Trust me.” He pulled out the stirrup while Riley stabbed at it with his left boot, finally getting it in with some help from Colby.

As Riley hoisted himself up, Colby pushed from below, one hand firm on Riley’s ass with the right amount of leverage to get him into the saddle without flying off the other side. Damn, he was really far from the ground on this horse. Not that Riley was afraid of heights, but he estimated the chance of falling off as extremely high until he had some practice. Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea. Was getting laid worth cracking his head open? Or worse, embarrassing himself?

Riley glanced down at Colby, his sexy plaid cowboy, and decided it was. And it would be so much better than last time because he wouldn’t be half-drunk.

“Now, kick your feet out of the stirrups.”

Riley followed directions, and Colby swung himself up behind Riley, settling against his back and reaching around to take the reins.

He felt warm and strong and very very good as he practically cradled Riley and got Granite walking.

Every time Colby shifted the reins, his arm brushed against Riley’s side, and Colby’s breath was warm against Riley’s right ear. It was perfect. They made their way through the little stand of trees beyond the barn, leaves ghostly in the pale moonlight.

“Where’re we going?” Riley asked, though he really didn’t care.

“Not too far. Just up to that rise. Can you see it?” Colby pointed but it was too dark to make out anything. “Lovely view.”

Riley refrained from mentioning it was dark and there wasn’t a view of much.

From the dark a cow mooed suddenly, and Riley gave a start. Colby’s arms tightened around him, pulling him close, steadying him against a firm chest and abs. “I guess we’re not really alone.”

“Never alone on a ranch, just out of sight of everyone else.”

Riley nodded, swaying with Colby to the horse’s slight rocking motion as Granite walked along an invisible trail. He heard only the soft clopping of hooves, Colby’s breath, and the buzz of a million insects. The saddle creaked occasionally. Colby didn’t speak, and though Riley felt the need to break the silence, he restrained himself. It was nice not talking, just listening, aware of everything around him for the first time since he’d come to the Rocking Z.

“You ready for me to pick up the pace?” Colby’s voice was a soft whisper.

“Fine with me.”

By some invisible communication, Granite broke into a slow trot. A bouncy trot, but Colby held Riley firmly enough to keep him from bobbing on the smooth, hard surface of the saddle. Another signal encouraged Granite into an easy canter, rocking his passengers.

The wind whistled in Riley’s ears and fluttered his hair. He and Colby moved back and forth in an easy rhythm with each stride. Kind of like sex, but intimate in a whole different way. Riley loved it. He felt safe and comfortable in Colby’s saddle.

The trail curled uphill and Granite slowed his pace, to Riley’s disappointment. He was slightly out of breath from the sheer excitement of the short ride.

“We’re almost there. Another few minutes.” Colby reined the horse upward toward a rock formation that had been impossible to see from below. As they came around a bend, Riley spotted a campfire.

“Looks like we’ve got company?”

“Not if I can help it.” Colby stopped Granite and slid off. “You can bring your leg around the front and slide down, or put your foot in the stirrup and swing down from there.”

“Maybe I’ll just slide this time.” Riley found it harder than he expected to bring his leg over the pommel and thought he looked like a cheerleader practicing the splits. Finally, he got his legs into the right position and slid down as Colby caught him.

Once he was on the ground, Riley realized the campfire had been set into a fire ring next to a blanket and pillows and a little table. He spotted a bottle of wine and some cupcakes left over from lunch. His heart swelled so much he thought it might burst.

“You set this all up? When?”

“After dinner. I came out here a while ago, set up the fire and everything. I hope it’s okay. Not much privacy, and it’s too far to go into town for a proper date on a weeknight.”

“It’s wonderful. Perfect.”

CampusCravings_HigherLearningMMBoxedSet_eBookCover600x900An excerpt from The Eloquent Jock…by Cassandra Carr

Brendan’s mouth dropped open. “Want…me?”

“Why is that so hard to believe?” I am so screwed, and not in a good way. A headache began to take hold and he moved his hand to massage harder.

“Look at you,” Brendan waved a hand in Scott’s general direction. “You’re gorgeous, you’re successful, you’re sophisticated. I’m just some confused shmuck who’s never even kissed a guy.”

“Never?” I should not care about this. I need to stop. No good can come of this.

Brendan’s face bloomed red. “No. I’m not the type to walk into some gay bar and pick up a guy. Just the thought of it kinda makes me want to puke.”

“Not everyone is interested in that lifestyle.”

“Are you?” Brendan shook his head. “I’m sorry. I don’t have the right to ask you that. I know I’m making an ass of myself right now, I just don’t know what to do.”

“About what?” Scott dug himself deeper with every word, but he couldn’t stop.

Brendan clenched his fists on the desk, tapping his knuckles. Meanwhile, his right leg bounced and the poor kid looked as if he would self-combust from the red suffusing his face.

After a moment of charged silence, Brendan said, “So, you want me, but can’t have me.”

“Right.”

“Well, you’re the first guy I’ve ever wanted. I’ve known about my sexuality for a while now, but this is the first time I’ve met somebody who actually interested me beyond a casual attraction. And this sucks. I’m distracted; I can’t do my schoolwork; I’m making mistakes on the ice. I can’t have this.”

Scott leaned against the window and asked, “Then what do you want to do?”

Brendan licked his lips and Scott’s treacherous gaze followed the movement. “This.” Before Scott could even react, Brendan had grabbed him and kissed him, sloppily pushing his tongue into Scott’s mouth even as Scott tried to force his muddled brain to catch up with the program. He moaned as Brendan’s strong arms came around his waist, pulling their groins together. For a guy with no experience, the man revved Scott up pretty fucking fast. His dick pushed against Brendan’s sizable erection. Brendan moaned and the back of Scott’s head bounced off the glass behind him as Brendan attacked his mouth with even more vigor.

The pain radiating through his skull brought Scott out of his trance. He shoved Brendan away—shit, the guy had some strength for a man his size—and retreated to the corner of the office. Brendan stood between him and the door or he would’ve bolted that way.

“We can’t do this,” he managed to gasp out. His body had a very different opinion, but Scott ignored his baser needs. Someone had to take charge and stop this madness.

“You said you wanted me.”

Scott blew out a loud breath through his nose. “That doesn’t mean we should do anything about it. In fact, it would be a lot safer for both of us if we didn’t.”

“Because you’re a professor?”

“Well yes, that. And I’m, what, fifteen years older than you?”

“You’re saying I’m just some dumb kid who doesn’t know any better?” Brendan began to turn away, but then spun back. “You responded to me. That might’ve been my first kiss, but I know what happened. You liked it.”

Putting up a hand in a placating gesture, Scott said, “I’m not denying anything, but enjoying a kiss and letting it go on are two different things.”

“I get it.” Scott tried to go on, but Brendan stopped him. “No, I do. I get it. I’m sorry.” Before Scott could stop him, he’d grabbed his bag off the chair he’d dumped it onto earlier, yanked open the door, and slipped through it. As he slammed the door behind him, Scott slumped to the floor.

“That went well, you jackass,” he muttered.

Here’s a little something from my story, HIS GUARDED HEART.

A heavy knock on the door drew his attention. It swung inward, revealing a tall man with lean muscles that filled out his white button down and black slacks well. Even the briefcase in his hand didn’t take away from his attractiveness. Beau studied him from his shaved head to the strong, clean-shaven, yet familiar face before he locked onto the agent’s stern stare. The dark brown depths told him nothing of his emotions. Cold and uninviting. The memory of a younger version of the man before him flashed across Beau’s mind. Then it dawned on him. Beau had represented Judd Wolfe a couple of times during his time as a JAG. “I see the Air Force didn’t make you less of an ass.” Beau watched one dark brow rise. “No. I’d say the same about you.” Beau stifled his amusement behind a slight rise of his mouth. As his lawyer, Beau had found it entertaining to get under his skin. “Who did you piss off to get babysitting detail?” Wolfe lifted one shoulder as he moved to the windows along the wall behind Beau, scanning the grounds outside. “The list is too long.” “So tell me, why has Homeland Security put a bodyguard on me?”

Meeting his stare, Wolfe narrowed his eyes. “You’ve been targeted for assassination.”
