Tuesday Tales - Spider

Hello! It`s time for Tuesday Tales.

Welcome back! It’s time for another snippet from my new book! I'm now working on an M/M hockey romance titled Open Net. This is the second novella in the Cayuga Cougars duology featuring LGBT players. This story centers on a young goalie, August Miles, a newcomer to the Cougars that we met in Mario and Lila's novella.
This story contains crude language and gay sexual situations. We are telling tales about hockey players so if that offends now would be the time to move onto another Tuesday Tales offering.  Our word prompt for the week is "Spider”.

Two hours later we were on the road to Elmira, New York. It was a short trip, just a little over ninety minutes. Sal wheedled me into letting him drive my Mustang. You know you trust a dude when you let him get behind the wheel of your most prized possession. The Castenada family lived in a nice middle-to-upper class section of Elmira in a white two story house with a decent sized yard. The house was big and painted eggshell white with blue shutters. As we pulled our bags and stuff out of the trunk, a plane flew overhead.
“There’s an airport close by,” Sal explained then slammed the trunk closed. Hand shielding my eyes I watched the jet gain altitude until the arrival of Sal’s sisters pulled my attention from the plane. Two pretty girls who had turned sixteen last month wearing jeans and light jackets bounced around the side of the house. One had long hair and the other short. That was the only physical difference I could spot in the twins. They smiled sweetly, pulled out a couple of massive squirt guns from behind their backs, and opened fire.
Sal ducked behind me with a shout. I stood in the driveway and took the blast full force. The girls lowered their guns and began apologizing. Sal peeked over my damp shoulder. Water dripped off my lashes and nose.
“Sorry,” Sal said over my shoulder, "my sisters have no manners.” He sounded angry. I thought it was kind of funny although meeting his parents wetted through to my Spider-Man boxers wasn’t on my agenda at all. “You two should be ashamed.” The girls dropped their heads. “For letting me get the upper hand.”
A water-pistol the size of an RPG came to rest on my shoulder. Sal soaked the girls before they could react with another barrage. The war was over when all the water in all the weaponry was gone. The four of us stood in the Castenada front yard, soaked to the skin, laughing, when a large white SUV bearing magnetic signs on the doors that read “Castenada Cleaning” pulled in and parked beside my Mustang.
“Shit,” Valeria, the twin with the short hair mumbled. Victoria, the twin with the long black hair, threw her gun at my feet as her parents exited their vehicle. Mr. Castenada was a tall, whip thin man with graying ebony hair and a warm smile. Mrs. Castenada was small, kind of round, and rolling her eyes to the crystal blue sky.
“This is how you greet Sal’s new boyfriend?” Mrs. Castenada asked her daughters.
“It’s okay, really,” I said as water trickled down my neck. “Sal warned me about the traditional greeting. I’m fine with being wet. It was fun.”
Mrs. Castenada clicked her tongue and then tried to dry my face with a tissue. Her kids were all talking at once.
“This is not working,” she huffed then tried to pluck tiny bits of wet tissue from my stubble. “My children know better behavior. Come inside and get into dry clothes.”
“Pleasure to meet you, August. Sal has talked about nothing else since he met you.” Mr. Castenada offered me his hand and I quickly took it. Both of Sal’s parents had strong Spanish accents. Mrs. Castenada hustled we four wet ones into the house then sent Sal and me to the laundry room to change while the twins were told to go upstairs but not drip on the new carpeting.
“Your family seems nice,” I told Sal as we peeled our sodden clothes off. “Watery, but nice.”
He chuckled then reached out to caress my upper arm. I smiled at how warm my skin grew under his palm.
“Can I kiss you?”
“Sure,” I readily agreed then leaned in.

Tuesday Tales - Picture Prompt

It`s our picture prompt week and the excerpt must reflect the image and be under 300 words.  Don`t forget to visit the other talented Tuesday Tales authors. Thanks for stopping by!

“Maybe we can just cruise around town.” The thought of heading anywhere that didn’t have paved roads made me twitchy. Heather stuck to her guns and so off to the farmlands we went, my gut knotting more and more tightly with every civilized mile we left behind. “I’m sorry Sal called you.”
Heather glanced at me from the rolling green countryside. Her eyelids looked heavy.
“I’m not,” she replied sleepily. I hadn’t heard a peep out of Jack for about five minutes so I assumed he had fallen asleep. The air coming in the windows grew cooler as we left Cayuga proper, so I rolled up my window and Heather did the same, leaving them just cracked an inch or two. “Let’s go down this road here. Brooks and I came up here a couple weeks ago. There’s this petting farm about ten miles down the road. Jack just loved the sheep.”
I followed her directions. The dirt road was shaded by towering trees. The sun pushed early morning beams of light through the oaks and birch. My foot slid off the gas and we just sat there admiring the beauty of nature.

Excerpts:

Why continue in unhappiness?  Change is inevitable, but most people fear it.  Better the devil you know than the one you don't know sort of thing.   That attitude leads to a mundane, unhappy existence.  I want to live and thrive and be about living my life, not watch it pass me by while I sit on the bleachers and wish I could or worse, wish I would have gotten in the game.

It is a brave step, that first step off the bleachers. Pulse quickening, mouth going dry, butterflies in the stomach yet continuing to put one foot in front of the other, moving away from the bleachers. The scenery is all new and fresh. Nothing is familiar because I haven't gone this way before.

Life is a grand adventure. It becomes thrilling and exciting; an element of danger is always there. Safe and orthodox is not safe, now is it?   Because if you remain in a safe job, doing the safe thing that sucks the life out of you, you are dying a little each day inside. Eventually high blood pressure, pot bellies, drinking and eating in excess and various other vices because the insanity of safe breaks our need to live, breathe, and thrive.

An excerpt of Ellie’s fiction writing is also included.

Tuesday Tales - Fan

This week we get to see our shy netminder play some hockey! Woo-hoo!
This story contains crude language and gay sexual situations. We are telling tales about hockey players so if that offends now would be the time to move onto another Tuesday Tales offering.  Our word prompt for the week is "Fan”.

The third period was just as physical but far less sloppy. It seemed as if both teams had been read the riot act because sin bin time was significantly reduced. The hard hits continued but they were clean hits. The net crashing spiked into outrageous levels however. After I had been knocked to my ass for a third time, I got a little upset and had a talk with the ref. I explained that I was worried about how impaired his vision must be since he didn’t see the blatant goaltender interference happening right under his nose. He told me to get back to my crease or I’d get slapped with a delay of game penalty.
“Blind motherfucker,” I mumbled as I slapped my mask back on my head.
“I got that dickwad Danielson,” Mario informed me as we waited for a problem with the clock to be fixed. “You just worry about keeping that puck out of our net.”
I gave him a nod. The forwards gathered to my right for a faceoff. Dan Arou, who had been quiet all night due to defensive pressure, won the faceoff, shuttled the puck back to Mario and then punched Bryce Danielson in the face. It was like that old Bible story about David and Goliath with Dan in the role of David. Dan might be short but he is a freaking force when he’s mad. As Dan and Bryce tossed gloves to the side of me, Mario managed to break away from the glut of players in my end. A couple of the Broncos were distracted by the slugfest and that was all Mario needed.
He broke over the blue line and took a snap shot. The Bronco goalie threw his glove up. The puck caught the edge of the catcher glove, spun up into the air, and then landed behind the Bronco goalie right on the line. Mario dove at the crease, his stick extended in front of him. He nudged the puck just enough to send it slowly creeping to the back of the twine. A linesman standing behind the goal pointed at the puck in the net. The goal light came on and the fans went bonkers.

Author/Book Spotlight & Gift Card Giveaway - R.J. Scott's The Code Ice Dragons #1

Please welcome a new friend, the lively and lovely R.J. Scott! Today she's here to talk about hockey and hockey romance. Two of my favorite things!

Obsession and things

I’ve always loved Ice Hockey, well, as far back as I remember, to the year that Torvill and Dean won Gold with Bolero. That was when I first saw it, and was just gob smacked at how fast and dangerous and sexy it was. I live in England, and we don’t have a lot of exposure to Ice Hockey here – we have the Elite League, Cardiff, Edinburgh, there is even a team only fifteen miles up the road from me – The MK Lightning, although, they aren’t in Elite at the moment (soon though).

Fast forward and I have always read hockey books. I’m not much into American football, and baseball just bores me (reminds me too much of cricket – too slow!). But Hockey? That is fast and passionate and did I mention, sexy. So I found this group, The Sin Bin, and I joined, and watched and commented, and found some new authors to read. I’m sure I have run out of hockey books to read now and I wait (not so patiently) for my favorite authors to release new books for me to devour.
But I never supported a US team, because… well… life happened, and I’m in England, and also I have a tendency to get passionately involved in anything I like to the point where it just won’t leave me alone.

So, I announced in the group that I needed a team to follow. Bear in mind that I knew nothing concrete about US Hockey, and the only name I really know is Sidney Crosby, because even he gets mentioned over here, and in the UK coverage of hockey (when it happens, which isn’t a lot of times!). I decided to look at stats, news reports and… no wait, I actually didn’t do any of that.
I opened Google and typed in *sexy NHL players*.

Well, I skimmed the list, and you’d laugh if you could see the way my tongue hung out. People in the group were throwing names at me, Tyler, Johnny, Patrick (several of those) and of course, Sidney.
I realized that one guy jumped out at me… well two actually… and that pretty much made up my mind. It was a simple equation.

The beautiful Kris Letang + the steel jawed sexy Sidney Crosby = Pittsburgh Penguins

And hey, I like penguins, they are cute. I did however have to look up where Pittsburgh was, LOL.
There was me deciding, and then I find out the Pens might make it to the end of round one of the playoffs, and I thought, yay, this is cool.
Then they only went and won the Stanley cup!!!!
I think, clearly, that I am a good luck charm. Nods.
I also fell for Geno, Rusty, and Horny, and Hags, and Kessel, and… you can see where I’m coming from.

Then of course, I had to write my own hockey book. Because, I’m a writer and I can’t leave it alone now. LOLs. The Code will be out in October, and is about a D with anger issues and his best friends little sister.

And as to where I got the name for the team, The Ice Dragons, from? I love Vermont, so decided to set the team there, and was researching and found Dragon boat races on Lake Champlain… this had to be done! So, the Burlington Ice Dragons team was born, an expansion team from back in 2010, not champions, but holding their own, finding their rhythm… I’m so excited, and have done so much research, guided by the awesome Lace Barton, a fellow Penguin fan who is explaining everything to me every time I have a question. Love that girl!

Hat Trick of Questions #3

I’m having such fun with this I couldn’t wait to do another! If there’s something you’d like to know about any of my upcoming books or just want to shoot a question at me, feel free to do so. I’ll do my best to answer your queries! Time to tackle this trio now.

1-What’s the one genre that you haven’t written but would love to?
Fantasy. I love, love, lovey love playing fantasy video games such as Dragon Age (Proud member of Team Alistair here), The Witcher, and the Elder Scrolls. I adored Skyrim so much I went out and got a tattoo of dragon language on my left forearm. My daughter has a matching one. It reads MOTHER AND CHILD.

Dragons, elves, fairies, mages, and dwarves. Sigh. I love them all but I’m not sure I have the skills necessary for the detailed world building that makes fantasy so amazing. Maybe one day I’ll work up enough nerve to try a simple short story about a young male elf falling in love with a young male dwarf. I do love me some forbidden love. Okay, maybe this needs to happen sooner than one day! *wink*

2-Do you read lots of “How-To Write” books?
Honestly, I haven’t read a How-To book about writing for years. I did when I first started seriously writing and it almost killed my muse. I’ve learned that other people’s process is not my process. I have to do what works for me and not what works for Mary Sue Author. When people ask me which How-To write book I recommended, I generally tell them to feel free to read whichever book sounds good to them but then toss it aside and write the way that feels natural to them.

3-If you could have one X-Man superpower what would it be?
I’ve always loved the notion of being able to teleport like Nightcrawler.

Imagine how awesome it would be to BAMF! to the grocery store and then BAMF! back home. No cars, no busses, no subway or train rides. Just a small cloud of brimstone-scented smoke and you’re there and back. Also, Kurt’s tail would be super handy when putting those groceries away!
