Writing is Mental: the birth of HIJACK IN ABSTRACT
Happy Book Birthday to Cherry Tucker's third mystery,
HIJACK IN ABSTRACT
! I'm eager to celebrate Cherry's third adventure while working on her fourth. When the writing becomes difficult, these release days are a good reminder of what can be done. I can recall feeling similar frustrations and panic while working on Hijack. Weaving the subplots and mystery can feel like juggling squirrels. (Squirrels, they don't juggle so good). I had a notebook full of sticky notes. A timeline page per day (Hijack takes place in less than a week). One note for each scene. Color coded to plot point. Labeled with characters and mini-synopsis.
This schematic mess was in addition to my corkboard on Scrivener, also color coded by scene for character, event, and setting.
And the lists.
A quarter of the way into the mystery, I have to keep extensive lists of clues as I'm writing. Also notes to myself to remember things for later scenes. Notes to check on research. Notes to change things I had already written. And notes for things to remember for the next book in the series. With each book, I'm left with an entire spiral notebook of scribbles. Most of it illegible. And I'm not even counting the notes I make on my computer's desktop stickies, notepad, and in Scrivener itself.
All of this results in paranoia that I'm losing control of the book. Panic wakes me in the middle of the night. I fret about it during the day. It's the first and last waking thing I'm thinking about until the book's revisions are done.
Writing is positively mental.
I mean this pejoratively.
I often ask myself why I'm doing it. And then I'll get a letter from a reader. And a good review. And thoughts about the next Cherry Tucker book. New ideas for another series. New ideas for a book in a different genre....
And then put myself through it all over again.Look for book 4, Death in Perspective, out in June;)
Criminal Element.com has a three chapter preview of Hijack in Abstract here.
Look for the third book in the Cherry Tucker Mystery Series, HIJACK IN ABSTRACT, on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kindle, Nook, Kobo, and iTunes. HUMOR, HIJACKINGS, AND A HANDFUL OF HUNKS…
“The fast-paced plot careens through small-town politics and deadly rivalries, with zany side trips through art-world shenanigans and romantic hijinx. Like front-porch lemonade, Reinhart’s cast of characters offers a perfect balance of tart and sweet.” – Sophie Littlefield, Bestselling Author of A Bad Day for Sorry

But when the sheriff asks Cherry to draw a composite sketch of a hijacker, her life takes a hairpin as the composite leads to a related murder, her local card-sharking buddy Max Avtaikin becomes bear bait and her nemesis labels the classical series “pervert art.”Cherry’s jamming gears between trailer parks, Atlanta mansions, and trucker bars searching for the hijacker who left a widow and orphan destitute. P.S. During the release, the first in the series, PORTRAIT OF A DEAD GUY, will be on sale for 99 cents.
So, can other writers out there commiserate? Do you go through a similar writing "process" of going mental? ;) Do you have lists and notes and stickies falling out of your nooks and crannies? Do tell!

Exploring Grantville, GA: The Walking Dead and Cherry Tucker
The small, rural town of Halo of Forks County, Georgia, is the fictional hometown of Cherry Tucker and friends in the Cherry Tucker Mystery Series. When I'm attending local events, I'm often asked if Halo is based on a particular town in Georgia. I grew up in and around small towns, and truly Halo is an amalgamation of Southern and Midwestern towns (and even a small Japanese town I once lived in). I've thrown in shops both real and imaginary. The residents are fictionalized versions of personalties I've encountered.
Senoia's tracks I used for a scene in Hijack in AbstractI live near Senoia, a quaint Georgian town used as a location set for many movies and TV shows (most famously, Fried Green Tomatoes and The Walking Dead) and recently home to Zac Brown's Southern Ground Social Club. Senoia was also a whistlestop with the early twentieth century bungalows and late Victorian houses you find in Halo. Since the production companies have moved in, Senoia has gentrified with a darling downtown with shops, restaurants, and Southern Living Idea Houses (and on certain weeks zombies and camera crews). However, Halo is on the cusp of renewal and lacks the funding of movie studios to pretty it up.

Downtown Grantville.
Imagine this building as the Tru-Buy grocery store
or Halo HeraldWhich brings me to Grantville, another Walking Dead location town. Another whistlestop with turn of the century houses and buildings. Like Halo, Grantville has seen better days. I am friendly with the mayor, Jim Sells, and know he is hard at work to bring businesses and funding to Grantville, to revive its economy. Grantville is Halo in many ways (minus the town square and local businesses) and the moment I drove off the interstate and into the town, I knew in my heart this was Cherry Tucker's world.
Grantville's tracks
Examples of traditional, early twentieth century homes found in small depot towns like Grantville. Or Halo.
Cherry's bungalow?
Although this is more what I imagined.
Mr. Johnson's (Cherry's neighbor) house.
Or this.
Picture yourself in Cherry's Datsun.
What do you think of when you imagine fictional small towns? Are these examples different than how you pictured Halo? Any Grantville or Senoia fans out there?
