The New Thing: Writing About Baseball (And love. And death.)

It’s quite a combination, I know. Taking the subject of baseball and rolling it into a novel women will want to read. Women’s fiction…contemporary romance…and baseball? Who is she kidding? one might ask. Here’s the thing: I’m finally up for the challenge. At about 35,000 words already written for the novel (BENEATH THE MIMOSA TREE was 59,000 words), I am making some serious headway with the main character I like, but who has some issues to overcome. Incidentally, she works [...]

A Piece of Short Fiction For Fiction Friday: “Time”

It’s been a while since I’ve posted any short creative fiction that I’m working on, and that’s primarily because I haven’t been working on any short fiction. I’ve been working on writing a novel, but all this talk about creativity in the classroom this week caused this story to pop into my head. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, I seize the opportunity to make it work. I hope you enjoy it. TIME: A Short Story It was [...]

Brushing Up Against Mad Creativity

Look around you. Seriously, look around you. Everything you see came from someone, but more importantly it started out as simply a creative idea. We’ve all had those moments when creativity is a spark, when it burns brightly, then fades away. We’ve also has those moments when creativity is a fire, burning brightly and furiously, and it stays with you and things start to happen. For the last few days in advertising class, we’ve talked about creativity, where it comes [...]

Remembering Earl Weaver

I didn’t know Earl Weaver well, only a little bit. He was at the helm when I started working for the Orioles as a 19-year-old in 1985. He was tough and rugged, spoke his mind, but was always fair. He was nice to those of us who were beginning our careers in sports. When he had to be somewhere and we needed to escort him, he didn’t put up a fuss. Players and managers were not as standoff-ish back then [...]

Steph’s Scribe’s 10 Favorite Places on the Planet (thus far)

It’s January 20th. The month isn’t even over, and I’m already thinking about vacations. I can’t wait to get to some warmer weather. Additionally, we’re thinking of doing a “big trip” this year with the kids, and we’re trying to select our destination. In doing some research, I thought I’d post my Top 10 Favorite Places on the Planet, with photos included to whet your appetite. The best part about traveling is what you gain from it, no matter how [...]

Odds & Ends, Updates, Books & Joe Flacco

There was a lot of excitement this week… It all started Monday night, when ABC2’s THE LIST featured BENEATH THE MIMOSA TREE on the show. It was a thrill to see the piece come together. Many thanks go to Steven, Nicki, Suzette, and my husband for helping this come to fruition. This week also marked the beginning of the spring semester. I hope my student are busy reading FRANK SINATRA HAS A COLD by Gay Talese, one of the greatest [...]

Positioning Yourself & Your Work

In 1972, two guys name Al Ries and Jack Trout collaborated on a series of articles for Advertising Age. The articles were about positioning: positioning a company or a brand in advertising. Now, 41 years later, the term “positioning” still holds true and is a buzzword among media creatives. The question? How can we get a consumer to pay attention to us in this, as Ries and Trout call it, a highly “over-communicated society.” Their question is even more viable [...]
