How do you know where to end your novel?

Dead End road sign

How do you know if it’s the right ending?

I’m not naturally a plotter, nor am I able to just sit down and magically create. I’m somewhere in between. So I always start off with a plan. It’s usually a proper story, you know, with a beginning a middle and an end and turning points and all that. I know the big stuff that happens. The rest… well, I have to write to find out the rest. Mostly,I write the thing and realise that the story the characters want to tell doesn’t actually fit very well wit...

Inheritance Books: Suzanne from Lavender Librarian

It’s a huge pleasure to have one of my favourite book bloggers on Inheritance Books. Suzanne’s Librarian Lavender blog not only showcases great books, she also showcases some amazing Etsy shops on her blog. (I blame her for my out of control Etsy habit).

Hi Suzanne, welcome to Inheritance Books. Would you like a biscuit – fresh from the oven? While they cool down, why don’t you tell us a bit about yourself?

SuzanneMy name is Suzanne and I’m 34 years old. I’m living together with my husband in a seas...

Six things I was wrong about six years ago (and Happy Birthday Choc Lit!)

Six things I was wrong about six years ago.

My lovely publisher, Choc Lit is six years old today. Yay! As part of the celebrations, we Choc Lit authors are blogging around the theme of six.I was going to write ‘six reasons I like having Choc Lit as a publisher’, or ‘Six books published by Choc Lit that I love’*, but decided to write this oneinstead. Don’t ask me why. It was late at night.

So here are six things I believed in six years ago, that I’ve subsequently realised are not true:

Inheritance Books: Krysten Hager

This week on the Inheritance Books sofa, we have Krysten Hager.

Hi Krysten, welcome to Inheritance Books. Can I get you a drink? Maybe some cake? In the meantime, please tell us a bit about yourself.

Krysten Lindsay HagerI’m excited to be here to today talking about my favorite subject—books! I have been a big reader all my life. My parents both loved to read and they always made sure I had plenty of reading material. There were countless trips to the bookstore, library, and also this great used bookstore in down...

I’m dreaming of… Midsummer Dreams

Today is publication day for m’chum and Choc Lit colleague Alison May’s new book Midsummer Dreams. For those who don’t already know, Alison writes rather fabulous modern adaptations of Shakespeare. Her previous book Sweet Nothing is a great read.

To celebrate the big day, Alison asked a whole bunch of us to write something about dreams. So here goes.

I had a dream about two women. It was all very exciting, but the only bit I remembered when I woke up was a single image of the two women sitti...

Goodreads book review: The Cake Shop In The Garden by Carole Matthews

The Cake Shop In The GardenThe Cake Shop In The Garden by Carole Matthews

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a charming book. All the descriptions of cake made me hungry, so I ate three cupcakes and half a packet of biscuits in the time it took me to read it. So, it’s also a fattening book.

Fay is lovely, but suffering from self esteem issues. Dan is sweet (and hot obviously), but there isn’t that much to him, really. Anthony starts off being the 2D ‘wrong man’, but ends up being much more solid and believable. Fay’s moth...

Inheritance Books: Josa Young

This week’s Inheritance Books are from Josa Young.
Hi Josa, welcome to Inheritance Books. Please take a seat on the lovely sofa. While I go fetch the biscuits, why don’t you tell us a bit about yourself.

Josa Young with Sail Upon the LandI have been a writer all my professional life, working out how to earn a living by writing as I wasn’t ready to write novels as a very young woman. Besides I didn’t think fiction could produce the means to support my three children. So I was a journalist, initially on Vogue after being a fina...

Inheritance Books: Georgia Hill

This week’s Inheritance Books are from Georgia Hill. Hi Georgia, welcome to the blog.

Many thanks to Rhoda for having me on. What a great idea for a blog!

Why, thank you! And it’s my pleasure. Do take a macaron, they’re so light I don’t they have any calories in them. So, tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m Georgia Hill and I write short stories, rom-coms and historical fiction. I’m published in magazines, by E-Scape Press and Harper Impulse, the digi-first imprint of Harper Collins.

I used to...
