Inheritance Books: Jenny Harper
I’d like to welcome Jenny Harper to the Inheritance Books sofa. Hellooo Jenny. While I go put the kettle on for tea, why don’t you tell us a bit about yourself?
I’m active, restless, easily bored, good at many things but world-class at nothing (except perhaps procrastination).
To address the first three of these features, I have always played a lot of sport – table tennis, tennis, squash, badminton, golf – and I have always walked (power walking and country walks). And I write. This fixes the...

How to create a character arc
I’ve been a bit lax with sharing my creative writing column with you. Last month, I wrote about character arcs – what are they? Why do you need one? How to create one.

Point of View explained
Last month’s column in the Beverley Guardian was all about Point of View. It’s something a lot of new writers struggle with. Here’s my explanation of it;

Inheritance Books: Monique Devere
This week on Inheritance Books, we’ve got Monique DeVere, who writes sweet and spicy fiction (which are a bit like those chili biscuits I had at Christmas, I imagine). Hi Monique. Grab a spot on the sofa. While I put the kettle on, why don’t you tell us a bit about yourself.
Thank you for inviting me on Inheritance Books to share the two books that had an impact on me growing up, Rhoda. I grew up on a plantation in Barbados and spent a lot of time exploring, looking for adventure, and getting...

Goodreads Book Review: Girl Number One by Jane Holland
Girl Number One by Jane Holland
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I was in the mood for a good solid thriller and Girl Number One did not disappoint! Ellie finds a body in the woods, but when the police go to look for it… there’s nothing there!
Ellie is fighting to remember the identity of her mother’s killer (she saw him when she was six, but has suppressed the memory so thoroughly, that not even hypnosis will bring it back out!) and she’s not entirely sure she’s not going mad. All the while she’s try...

Goodreads Book Review: Techbitch by Lucy Sykes
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I loved, loved, loved this book. I picked it up after I read a review from Kevin of I Heart Chicklit. Besides, it’s called ‘Techbitch’ – what’s not to love!
The story isn’t a romance. There is plenty of love in it – Imogen clearly loves her husband Alex and her kids- but that’s not the crux of the story. It is more like ‘The Devil wears Prada’ from in reverse. Imogen, the protagonist is 40 and is threatened by her former assistant, who had been...

Goodreads Book Review: Cora’s Christmas Kiss and Jessica’s Christmas Kiss by Alison May
I had a bit of a Christmas novella reading spree this Christmas – partly because I can on holiday in Sri Lanka over Christmas and somehow, reading about snowy, frosty christmasses seemed more appropriate when you’re lying under a fan in a tropical country. I read Alison May’s two Christmas novellas in quick succession.
Jessica’s Christmas Kiss by Alison May
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I bought this book because I read Cora’s Christmas kiss (review below) and really really wanted to know more abou...

Goodreads book review: Oddly Normal by Otis Frampton
Oddly Normal Vol. 1 by Otis Frampton
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I bought this book after someone on Twitter recommended it (I asked for recs for a comic suitable for an eight year old girl who isn’t particularly into superheroes). She read it in an evening. Her comments: ” I really like it because it’s a really interesting book and it tells you something about life and helps you with life – be careful what you wish for.”
I liked it too. I particularly liked that Oddly stood out/apart from her fe...

Inheritance Books: Julie Ryan
Today we’ve got Julie Ryan visiting the Inheritance Books sofa. Hi Julie, welcome to Inheritance books. Why don’t you grab a mince pie and tell us a bit about yourself.
At the age of eleven I decided I wanted to be a French teacher so after University that’s what I trained to be. Then I got a taste for travel and spent a few years teaching in Greece, Poland and Thailand. I didn’t realise at the time what a huge impact living abroad would have on my life. I now live in rural Gloucestershire wi...
