Terrific thriller
Once a Liberal Arts major in French Literature, J.A. Schneider, a former staffer at Newsweek, brings aspects of her fascination with medicine, forensic science, and human psychology into her gripping thrillers. I am honored that she read my work. This is what she says about my medical thriller, Overdose:

This third in a stunning series had me glued to the page. Ash has been out of her coma for a few months when dizziness and headaches require her to re-visit her neurosurgeon, Dr. Patel. He is an unnerving man whose history includes a 10-years-ago mysterious medical mission to India, and the recent suicide of his wife. Ash wants to know if her symptoms result from Patel’s treatment, and agrees to dine with him to find out more. Something alarming happens at the end of their “date,” and Ash immediately texts her boyfriend, Michael. The two investigate to get to the truth about Patel in a medical thriller that has a great plot with some terrific twists.
The first two in this series, “Coma Confidential" and "Virtually Lace" kept me up late reading, and “Overdose,” even more so. Ash is a strong, smart woman who is also likeable and often quite humorous in her observations. From the first page I was engrossed, and the pace never lagged. Highly recommended, five stars!

"Coming back to life . . . " Overdose (Ash Suspense Thrillers with a Dash of Romance Book 3) by Uvi Poznansky is just as advertised, a fast suspense thriller, with intriguing romance added. After the first two books in the series ("Coma Confidential" and "Virtually Lace") kept me up, I was excited to get into this one, and it's the best yet with some surprising twists. Great series!

Uvi Poznansky wears a coat of many colors. Originally from Israel where she studied Architecture and Town Planning then moving to the US where she studied Computer Science and became an expert in Software Engineering, Poznansky managed to combine the design elements of two studies into unique formats. And she has accomplished the same with the other side of her brain - making visual her ideas (she is an accomplished painter, drawer, and sculptor who has enjoyed exhibitions both in Israel and in California, her present base) and making words in poetry and in short stories and children's books. APART FROM LOVE: Still Life with Memories is an adult romance in five parts, and now the series – the Ash Suspense Thrillers - combines the thriller genre with romance. The entries to date - COMA CONFIDENTIAL, VIRTUALLY LACE and now OVERDOSE.
From the first lines of this fine novel the mood and tone are set – ‘Coming back to life is a tough undertaking. I’m in over my head. Michael says I should put what happened out of my mind. Now that I’ve recovered, there’s no point in trying to bring back into memory my stay in the ER, only to dwell on it to no end. He does his best to distract me from my agonizing thoughts, not only by sending me chocolate, wine, and flowers but also by sweeping me off my feet, straight into his fantasy world…First and foremost, I must contend with my own nightmares…’
Uvi’s skill at both visual and written art is outstanding, but her history of diversity does not end there. A synopsis of this series Book 3 follows: ‘Months after recovering from coma, Ash discovers that the man who performed her brain surgery has a questionable medical experience and a dark past, starting with his medical mission in India ten years ago and ending just recently, with his wife’s suicide. Should Ash expose him, at the risk of becoming vulnerable to his revenge? In an attempt to learn more, Ash goes on a date with him. When the waitress drops a pink cellphone into her hand, she is hit by a bullet. On the cellphone are his wife’s last words. “Perhaps you have the urge to shut me off, or at least to ignore what I’m about to say. But listen you must, because even if you don’t believe it, you’re already much too close to danger… Neil is my undoing. Make sure he isn’t yours.”
Beauty of prose bound together with a sensitive thriller make this very special new series from a very fine writer. Even the cover art bespeaks Uvi’s artistic gifts. As she says, ‘While sitting in the hospital’s waiting room (waiting fort my loved one) I started to design the cover. You may wonder: what inspired the composition? It is a wonderful paining by Goya. It depicts his own doctor taking good care of him at the time he fell sick. By contrast, my OVERDOSE cover hints at something insidious, mainly by the use of blue colors and by keeping the doctor’s face masked.’ Yet another aspect of Uvi’s talent! Highly recommended. Ash has been out of her coma for a while now. She had been doing pretty well until the dizziness and headaches started after her follow-up visit with Dr. Patel. She has always felt uneasy about him, but agrees to a date with him hoping for any kind of information about him. Something very strange happens at the end of their date and she immediately texts her boyfriend, Michael. There is definitely something odd about Dr. Patel and Ash feels the need to know. She and Michael investigate to get to the truth about this man. This medical thriller has a great plot with some good twists. From the minute I started reading, I was engrossed in the story. I definitely recommend it.

I have read and reviewed quite a few of Uvi Poznansky's books, including the first two volumes of this series, and "Overdose" is my favorite so far. The first half of the book is so taut and suspenseful that I couldn't put it down, and once I was hooked, I grabbed every chance to read that I could to find out what happened next. I love that Ash is a strong, intelligent and independent woman who is still very human and easy to like. The story is told in the first person (by Ash), and I enjoyed that a lot of her observations about her circumstances and her life were quite humorous. This is a serious novel, but humor goes a long way in telling a good story - even an intense thriller.
Uvi Poznansky is an excellent storyteller with believable characters and well-thought-out premises and plots. Her main characters are strong and believable and vivid enough that you can imagine sitting down to lunch and a chat with them. She also makes very good use of her knowledge of modern technology and stretches it just enough to make it scary.
I highly recommend the "Ash Suspense Thrillers with a Dash of Romance" trilogy, which can be read in any order. VERY enjoyable!

Oh my holy cow
Heather Jane Hogan has narrated several of my audiobooks, and I am always curious to learn about her craft. So at the completion of ou new project, the audiobook edition of Overdose, I asked her to write about her craft. This is what she writes about the way she found the voices for my characters in Overdose:
Oh my holy cow
By Heather Jane Hogan
I just love the way Uvi writes. She has a haunting turn-of-phrase that really gets under my skin. Finding voices for this book wasn’t as challenging as the previous book, Coma Confidential, because a few of the characters were the same - however, I did have some trouble finding the right voice for Michael since he wasn’t as prevalent in Coma Confidential as he was in Overdose, and Uvi asked me to change it up a bit because I started him off too aggressive. She was right, of course, and that gave me room to make Dr. Patel the aggressive one.
I also liked that Mrs. Winters was in this more; I enjoy doing her voice. I based that character on a close relative, who is as pretentious as they come (and I love the dickens out of her).
As far as Karishma, the Indian dialect isn’t one I’m fully adept at, so I went with a softer, less confident voice to help with that. Also, whenever I do a dialect I’m not 100% familiar with (like Indian), I have to say a phrase before each line of dialogue. For Indian, its “Oh my holy cow.” Don’t ask me why; I don’t remember the origin, but for some reason, saying that helps put my mouth in the proper form to then speak with that dialect.

This is indeed a thriller which combines both medical and computer knowledge with a touch of romance.
Dr. Patel, it appears, is not what he professes to be which has Ash and Michael on his trail to determine exactly what he has 'up his sleeve'. Supposedly he is a Professor of Psychology and a Neurosurgeon..., Stand by for some investigative techniques that are excellent.
A pink cellphone, and funeral pyres in India are important parts in the process, as well. The reader is also 'listening' as well as reading. There are devices involved which gave me a headache just reading about them... Just the possibility of this occurring is mind boggling.
Some doctors, including Dr. Patel, don't take the Hippocratic Oath as seriously as the ancient Greeks did when writing it. Ethics were tossed out the window in his case, for sure.
Isaiah 26:19 is mentioned and I thought that was a perfect touch in the context of this novel. Love Browny, the Golden Retriever! Good dog, good dog...Characters are well developed, plot is multi-layered and the reader is taken on a journey which involves both a medical mystery and computer knowledge. Extremely well written novel.

I did not realize until the end of this book that I started reading a series and in the middle, so I felt a little disappointed when it stopped suddenly. However I was thrilled to find there were more and I could begin from the beginning. I think it will be a great series as I thoroughly enjoyed this one book out of order.
