ORPHANED

Elkridge Series Book 4

BY LYZ KELLEY

Blurb

The search for a sister. Decades of guilt. Who to trust?

Jenna is desperate to find her younger sister, who was taken from her when she was seven years old. She believed Caitlyn, who was adopted by a wealthy family, was doing fine, only to discover her sibling vanished under eerie circumstances. Unfortunately, Jenna’s attracted the attention of the last man to see her sister alive.

Grant has returned to town to take over his ailing father’s law practice. When his socialite parents try to interfere in his relationship with Jenna, a woman they consider lower class, he puts his foot down. He intends to marry the adorable baker, and no one will change his mind—not even Jenna.

Jenna and Grant’s lives are upended when a stranger brings upheaval, and their trust in each other is severely tested by this shocking surprise.

The ELKRIDGE SERIES—sensual, contemporary romance novels about wounded women and the men who heal them. If you love heartfelt characters, deep topics with powerful emotional stakes, and happy endings, then you’ll love Lyz Kelley’s moving tales of strength, love, and survival.

In ORPHANED, the fourth full-length novel in the series, you learn more about town characters, and unearth more clues to who murdered Sheriff Sam.

ORPHANED

Elkridge Series Book 4

BY LYZ KELLEY

Storyline

Why did you choose the storyline for ORPHANED?

I started thinking about this story more than 10 years ago after I chatted with New York Times best-selling author Grace Burrowes following a writing workshop. A child advocate attorney in Maryland, she told tales of wonderful foster families in the area, no names included, who warmed my heart. Years later, I volunteered at Mount Saint Vincent’s, a non-profit in Denver, where I discovered teachers, psychologists, and administrators who were passionate about helping kids removed from abusive homes. Add those two things together, and I started to ask, what if. What if there were two sisters: the older one is placed in foster care, and the younger is adopted by what seemed to be perfect parents? What if the one, who didn’t get a forever family, had a happy and healthy upbringing? From there, the story came alive and ORPHANED was born.

How did you come up with the idea for Grant’s character?

When the story opens, Grant’s love for Jenna never wavers. How odd. Right? Usually, it takes pages and pages for the hero to fall in love with the heroine. That’s the normal course of things, but I’ve never liked rigid rules. Grant falling in love with Jenna before he really knows her is what intrigued me about him. He’s already in love, and then that love is tested to the point of breaking. That’s what creates a good drama.

Jenna is a diabetic baker. How does that work?

Can you see the irony in having a diabetic baker?  I can. But this combination fits Jenna’s need for family. She must rely on others to taste her baked goods, which creates a conflict for the independent baker. Baking is her way of creating a family.

Finding a cure for diabetes is also something I care about. Several of my family members have diabetes, and I wanted to highlight the struggle, the embarrassment, the challenge of living with the condition. I hope a cure is found soon.

Are you still adding clues to Sheriff Sam’s murder?

Yep…big time. Hope you are enjoying playing detective and finding the clues as to who murdered Sam.

**Author Peek** Interview with Leeann Betts, HIDDEN ASSETS (By The Numbers Series Book 6)

**Author Peek** Interview with LEEANN BETTS

HIDDEN ASSETS

INTRODUCING…Leeann.

Before we get started talking about your writing, tell us a little about yourself, where you’re from, what you do for a living (if you’re not a full time writer) what hobbies you have, etc. Whatever you’d like to share to introduce yourself.

I am the alter-ego of author Donna Schlachter, who is a Canadian by birth and an American by choice. Donna refers to me as her “cute and perky” counterpart, and she likes to get me to do things she wouldn’t do herself, being the oldest sibling of five and raised as always having to set the example. Being the alter-ego is kind of cool, because I can get away with things—sort of like being the youngest, which I think Donna likes. In addition to writing, I/we also edit and ghostwrite professionally. An accountant by training, I/we love numbers because, as Carly says, “people might change, but numbers never do.”

1. How did you get started writing?

I think I’ve always liked writing, but I wrote my first full-length novel in 2002 for a National Novel Writing Month Challenge.

2. What appeals to you about the genre that you write?

I like mystery because it makes my brain work and I have a strong sense of justice. I write cozy mystery because I don’t like a lot of blood and gore.

3. What is your favorite part of writing?

Typing “The End”, although coming up with the idea and writing the synopsis is fun, too.

4. If you had to give up writing and do something else, what would you do instead?

Work in a library so I could surround myself with other people’s books.

5. What’s your favorite meal of the day?

Dinner, because that’s a meal where you can eat steak and not feel guilty or gluttonous.

6. Which are your favorite characters to write, the female characters or the male characters? The heroes and heroines, or the villains?

I like to write the male characters, because it seems like I can hear their voices better, and I really like writing villainous males, like stalkers. Creepy!

7. Are you an avid reader?  When you do read someone else’s writing, what is your favorite genre?

I do read a lot. My favorite genre is cozy mystery, romantic suspense, and historical suspense/mystery.

8.  Many writers dream of having the ideal location to write. If you could live anywhere in the world or live a particular lifestyle, where would you be answering these questions right now?

I’d love to have a small house on a beach where it’s warm/moderate temps year round.

9.  If you were a color, what color would you be and why?

I’d be teal blue. It’s a happy color for me.

10.  Tell us about your next book & when is it being published?

Hidden Assets is book 6 in the By the Numbers series, featuring Carly Turnquist, forensic accountant. It releases June 30th, and it’s set in a small town in Wyoming where Carly and Mike are visiting an old college friend of Carly’s, who is in the midst of a sticky divorce and suspects her husband is trying to hide assets from the divorce court.

BEYOND REASON

The Texas Trilogy

BY KAT MARTIN

BLURB

In a bold direction with more suspense than ever before, New York Times bestselling author Kat Martin raises chills as danger stalks a woman determined to make it in a man’s world . . .

Five weeks ago Carly Drake stood at her grandfather’s grave. Now she’s burying Drake Trucking’s top driver, and the cops have no leads on the hijacking or murder. Faced with bankruptcy, phone threats and the fear of failure, Carly has to team up with the last man she wants to owe—Lincoln Cain.

Cain is magnetic, powerful, controlling—and hiding more than one secret. He promised Carly’s granddad he’d protect her. The old man took a chance on him when he was nothing but a kid with a record, and now he’s the multi-millionaire owner of a rival firm.

But Linc’s money can’t protect Carly from the men who’ll do anything to shut her down, or the secrets behind Drake Trucking. If she won’t sell out, the only way to keep her safe is to keep her close . . . and fight like hell.

BEYOND REASON

The Texas Trilogy

BY KAT MARTIN

EXCERPT

An hour later Carly was dressed and ready to accompany Linc to Dallas. Last night had been a respite, hours of amazing sex and worry free slumber.

Lincoln Cain was everything a man could be–at least in bed. The rest remained to be seen.

Last night had been fantastic, but today reality was setting back in. Whoever had murdered Miguel Hernandez was still on the loose and El Jefe, who might have been responsible, still expected her and Drake Trucking to join his organization.

“You ready?” Dressed more casually today in dark blue Levi’s, a white western shirt rolled up to the elbows, and a pair of black cowboy boots, Linc walked out of his home office down the hall.

The residence, apparently over a hundred years old, had been completely remodeled. It was simple and masculine, yet everything inside was modern and entirely first class, including the stainless kitchen, the bathrooms, powder room, Linc’s office and home gym.

And everything about the place fit him perfectly.

“Let me grab my purse.”

In a pair of jeans and a sleeveless blue print blouse, she joined him in the slate-floored entry. She’d only brought an overnight bag. Aside from what she’d worn yesterday, she hadn’t packed the kind of clothes she would need for the city. Since Linc wanted to go to his office after they talked to the Grangers, then later they were going out to supper, he’d agreed to stop by her house so she could change into something more appropriate.

And now that it appeared she was staying at the ranch–she flushed at a memory of last night–she needed to bring more of her clothes back to his place.

With the strap of her laptop slung over Linc’s shoulder, she walked beside him out of the house. He helped her into the Jeep and they headed for the helipad, where the chopper was waiting when they arrived. It swooped up, crossed the short distance between their two homes in minutes, and set down again in the field across from Joe’s little house.

Carly went around to the back door and unlocked it, but Linc caught her before she had time to get inside.

“Let me take a look first.”

It seemed a little over the top. She didn’t think El Jefe would be lying in wait in her small rundown house, but under the circumstances, caution wasn’t a bad idea.

When Linc returned a few minutes later with a grim look on his face, a shot of fear slid through her.

“What is it?” She pushed past him into the kitchen and he didn’t try to stop her. First she noticed the broken window over the kitchen sink, then the awful destruction around her. Her legs refused to move. She couldn’t believe what she was seeing. She heard the crunch of broken glass as Linc came up behind her, drew her back against his chest.

“It’s only stuff,” he said softly. “It’s easily replaced.”

She glanced around the room, at the shattered coffee cups on the floor, the pictures smashed against the walls, and her eyes filled. “It’s not just stuff. It’s my stuff…and Joe’s.”

She felt his muscles tighten.

Carly started walking through the debris, the dishes dragged out of the cupboard and broken into pieces, the stuffing out of the sofa tossed onto the living room floor.

Linc opened the door to the garage and flipped on the light. Walked out then walked back in. “Your pickup’s okay. Must not have gone into the garage.”

Her legs shook as she headed down the hall to her bedroom. The bedding had been pulled off, the perfume bottles and photos on the dressers had been shoved off onto the floor.

“Why?” she asked. “I told him I’d do what he wanted. Why would he destroy my home?”

“We don’t know it was him. Not for sure. I didn’t see any kind of note. If it was El Jefe, he didn’t leave a message like before.”

Her legs felt wobbly as she crossed the carpet to her closet and slid open the doors. Some of her clothes had been ripped off the hangers, but most still hung on the bar.

“He was wearing down by the time he got to the bedroom,” Linc said. “His anger mostly spent.”

She brushed a tear from her cheek, sank down on the foot of the bed. She glanced up at Linc, whose features looked as grim as she felt.

“You sure you didn’t do this just so I’d have to stay out at the ranch?” she teased.

His eyes met hers and his lips twitched. He sat down beside her and pulled her onto his lap. “I’m glad you’ve still got your sense of humor.”

Her gaze lit on a broken photo of her and Joe. It was her graduation from high school. Joe had been so proud of her that day. Her throat tightened and a fresh rush of sadness swept through her. “Yeah.”

“I’ll put some people on this, have the place put back together.”

“You don’t have to do that.”

“I know.” His eyes crinkled at the corners. “I promise I won’t make it so nice you’ll want to move back in.”

She sliced him a look.

“At least not too soon.”

Carly managed a smile.

“I’m going to have your bedroom packed up and moved to the ranch house. We’ll put your stuff in a spare bedroom until your place is cleaned up and you’re ready to move back in. I’ll get one of the hands to drive your pickup out to the ranch, okay?”

She didn’t want to do it. She didn’t want to be completely under Linc’s control. But she didn’t dare stay in the house alone–not until they figured out what was going on.

FEEL ME

O’Brien Family #4

BY CECY ROBSON

Blurb

RT Book Reviews proclaims that the O’Brien Family series from award-winning author Cecy Robson “has the hottest brothers ever!” And in FEEL ME, Declan, the sexy, driven powerhouse meets the one woman immune to his charm . . .

Declan O’Brien was always driven to take his place among Philly’s elite, working hard for everything he’s earned, including the title of Assistant District Attorney. He’s won seemingly impossible cases, so he’s furious when he’s assigned to lead the one unit he doesn’t want.

Melissa Fenske was born hearing impaired to a neglectful mother, finding solace when she was adopted by a young attorney, now Declan’s boss. As the current Director of Victim Services, Melissa’s livid when Declan is placed in the main unit she oversees. She can’t forget their disastrous first encounter. Or shake how he makes her feel.

Declan considers the assignment another step toward his political aspirations, despite that he can’t get Melissa out of his mind. Melissa sees Declan as egotistical and self-serving, kicking herself for how fast she’s falling for him. Someone as hot, smooth, and perfect as Declan isn’t supposed to want her.

In another situation with any other woman, Declan wouldn’t hesitate to take Melissa to bed. But she is the boss’s daughter, and for once, Declan finds himself wanting more than just a one night stand.

Neither counted on each other. Both just met their match.

FEEL ME

O’Brien Family #4

BY CECY ROBSON

Excerpt

My hands fall to my lap. “I suppose now is a good time to tell you what I’m looking for,” I say quietly.

“What you’re looking for?” he asks.

I tilt my chin, wondering why he seems confused. “Well, yes. I have certain needs that I’m hoping you’ll help me with.”

His grip to his pen tightens. “Needs? For yourself?”

“For my unit,” I clarify. I wish like his brother, Declan also understood American Sign Language. Then I could sign and not give away how nervous I sometimes feel around him. I roll my ankle, trying to shake off some of my anxiety. For all he drives me crazy, he’s doing a hell of a job making me feel self-conscious. That doesn’t mean I’ll cower or stay quiet. “It’s my understanding that the assistant D.A.s currently assigned to SACU are burnt out and requesting reassignment.”

“That’s right,” he says, his expression sour. “Just a few hours on the job and I’ve already received transfer requests in writing.”

“I’d like to help select their replacements.” “Excuse me?” he asks.

Okay, here we go. Boob appreciation hour is officially over. “I’m not trying to step on your toes.”

“But?” he asks, leaning back against his chair.

“But nothing. I respect that the decision is ultimately yours. I’m only asking for the opportunity to provide input.” He keeps his expression neutral, and I can’t be sure he’s listening. I force myself to continue. “There have been a few new hires, and a few D.A.s looking to be challenged. I’d like to observe them in court and see how they perform on their feet. More importantly, I want to observe how they interact with victims of the more violent crimes.”

Declan appears anything but pleased. Either I’ve pissed him off or I’ve pushed him into something he’s not ready for. “I’m going to lay it right out for you,” he says, his tone matter-of fact. “SACU is the unit attorneys least want. I’m surprised the A.D.A.s currently there have lasted as long as they have.”

All right. I did annoy him. “They’ve lasted because it takes a while to become acclimated,” I counter. “But once there, they realize their importance and how much the victims and their families depend on them to help them through the process.”

“I’m not saying the work or the victims aren’t important. What I’m saying is no one is exactly begging to work there.”

“I realize SACU is the last place our attorneys want to be placed,” I say, staring straight at him. “Especially those who enter this office strictly to make connections and jump start their political careers. But it’s one of the most important units because of the sensitive subject matter and the degree of violence we see.”

I don’t mean to be so blunt, and maybe he doesn’t either, but here we sit with our gazes locked and the tension between us escalating.

Damn it. Dad wants us to work as a team. But the more we speak, the more I’m reminded Declan doesn’t want to be a part of this unit, and nowhere near me.

I inadvertently trail my fingers above the collar of my dress, it’s a nervous habit, much like when women tuck a strand of their hair behind their ear. But I never tuck my hair with my hearing aids in place. Any sound that brushes too close to the receiver such as the movement of hair, putting on a hat, resting my head against a pillow, even an intimate whisper, creates back noise similar to nails on a chalkboard.

My fingertips stroke close to the swell of my right breast as I think our situation through. I freeze when I realize Declan’s stare is following each subtle movement.

This is too weird. No way can Declan O’Brien be eyeing me like he wants to take a lick.

I ran into him at a restaurant a few weeks back. I was picking up takeout following a five mile run, still wearing the shorts and sports bra I ran in. Of course I had to see him. And of course he had to look good . . . and so did the blonde on his arm. She was a total stick and all legs, wearing a dress I don’t think I could have shoved my left breast into. I’m so not his type. So then why . . .

“I’ll allow the input,” he says.

“I’m sorry?”

“I’ll allow the input,” he says, a little louder.

This time I don’t correct him. I didn’t hear him, too busy watching him watch me which is absolutely ridiculous―ludicrous even―and good God, why does he have to look so good in that damn suit!

“Thank you,” I say, tripping over the word.

True Deceit by A.J. Carella

Excerpt

The dim bulb barely reached the dark recesses of the room as one by one the men took their seats.

Once the eight men were seated around the weathered wooden oval table, the figure at one end spoke. “Thank you all for coming.” He looked around the table, looking each man in the eye. Each of these people had been handpicked to take a seat at this table.

“Why did you call us here? I had to cancel a meeting at the White House for this,” the man on his immediate right complained.

“I have a new target gentlemen.” He gestured at the folders on the table in front of each of the chairs.

“Wait a minute, this goes against the rules,” another one of the men spoke up. “They are very clear; no more than one target every six months.”

“Don’t tell me the rules,” he snapped. “I wrote the damn rules.”

“So what is this then?” Another man held up his folder. “You don’t have to abide by them, is that it? The rules are in place for our own protection, to minimize our risk.”

He nodded, acknowledging the point. “Yes. But this case is unusual. This is personal. This is about Michael.”

He watched the glances pass between them all and knew that he had won. Not one of them would dare to vote against him now. This is why he had called them here: to vote. No action could be taken by any one member without the others. There was only one outcome if they agreed. “So, are we ready to vote? Who is in agreement?” He smiled to himself as everyone raised their hands. “Good. It’s decided then.”

He stood up from the table. “Don’t forget to shred your files before leaving the room.”

All the men picked up their file. With the exception of one, they made their way over to the shredder in the corner of the room. The one who remained stood and came over to him.

“Can I have a quick word?”

He turned to face the man who had complained about cancelling his meeting. “Of course.”

“Seeing as I’m already here, I thought I might stay awhile if that’s ok.”

He smiled. “Of course,” he said again, reaching for the keychain on his belt. “Any particular choice?”

“The redhead.”

The man reached for the key as he held it out but he pulled it out of reach. “I don’t want a repeat of last time. She was out of action for weeks after you finished with her and she hasn’t outlived her usefulness yet.”

“I’ll be careful.” The man was visibly struggling to contain his excitement as he looked longingly at the key. “I promise.”

“Make sure you are,” he said, handing it over.

He watched as the man quickly went and shredded his file before letting himself out of the room. He waited until everyone had left before opening his own copy and looking at the pictures inside. He knew that Michael would thank him for this one day.

Meticulous about security, he shredded it before leaving the room and locking the door behind him. Once outside, he paused. He should leave, he had work to do, but the temptation was so close and he was feeling very pleased with himself. I deserve a reward. Instead of taking the stairs that would take him back upstairs, he turned left.

The tunnel had been hewn out of rock a long time ago and he’d come across it quite by accident. He’d bought this property when he’d first known that he needed somewhere private to go. Somewhere out of the way, remote. This abandoned farm had fit the bill perfectly, miles from anywhere on the outskirts of a town that was dying a little bit more with each passing year. The discovery of the tunnel system had been an unexpected bonus and one he had made full use of and improved upon.

At first the rudimentary lighting system showed nothing more than bare walls as he made his way deeper into the tunnel but after a few hundred feet, he started passing heavy wooden doors built into the rock. He’d passed several before he heard the sound of a woman screaming out in pain and chuckled to himself. It sounded like he was having a good time. The sound got louder as he got closer until he was right outside the door. He paused for a moment, tempted to slide open the small viewing panel built into the door at eye level, but decided against it. He had his own entertainment to get to and he didn’t want to deny himself any longer.

The screams faded once more as he carried on walking until he could no longer hear them and before long he found himself at his destination. The door was the same as all the other doors along the tunnel but this one was his favorite. Behind it was the one he’d selected for himself, the one no one else was allowed access to.

Taking a key off his belt he slid it into the lock and turned, the metallic groan as the bold slid free alerting the occupant to his arrival. She scampered off the dirty mattress on the floor where she’d been sitting and pressed herself against the far wall. He smiled. He loved to see their fear.

“Missed me?” He asked as he closed the door behind him.

CHAPTER 1

Monday, October 4, 1869, New York City

Bang! Bang! Bang!

The sound of someone pounding on her front door reached Ava Lewis in the kitchen where she was shining a sapphire ring she’d just finished making. She wiped the abrasive cream from her hands onto a towel, rather than on the pristine white apron that covered her favorite lavender dress. By the time she reached the living room and padded across the carpet runner to the front door, her hands were free from the cream. She checked the clock on the fireplace mantle, only six-fifteen in the morning.

Who would be here this time of the morning?

Bang! Bang! Bang!

“I’m coming. Hold your horses.”

She opened the door wide.

“What do you want?”

The person standing in the hallway wore a light colored field jacket wrinkled from long wear and pants, with the knees nearly worn through, had definitely seen better days.

“Jeffrey! Is that you? Come in.”

“Hi Sis.”

Her twin brother, boasting long sable brown hair and a full beard, stumbled into her living room and fell unconscious to the floor. His carpet bag next to him in the hallway.

“Jeffrey!”

Ava shut the door and knelt by her brother. She checked his pulse and, thank the Lord, found one.

What is he doing here? He’s supposed to be in Peru on a dig.

She slapped his face.

“Jeffrey. Jeffrey.”

Getting no response she ran to the kitchen, grabbed her smelling salts. She ran back to her brother who lay unmoving on the floor, and placed the smelly bottle under his nose.

He pushed away the foul stench and opened his eyes, blinking several times.

“Thanks, Sis. Sorry about passing out in your doorway. I need a place to stay. I won’t lie to you. I’ve got some bad people after me.”

“What do you mean bad people?”

She noticed he kept his left hand pressed to his right side.

“Are you hurt? Let me see. Can you stand? Let’s get you to the sofa. Take my hand and I’ll help you.”

He grasped her hand and stood.

“Where’s my bag?”

She helped him over to the sofa where he sat heavily.

“Probably still in the hallway. I’ll get it. I wasn’t too concerned with luggage when you passed out on my floor.”

She opened the door, saw the carpet-bag in the hall and brought it inside, setting it next to the green brocade sofa where he sat.

“Thanks, Sis. I’m hurt pretty badly. I wasn’t sure I’d make it here. People are trying to kill me because of what I carry.”

He pulled on her arm with his right hand. His grip like iron, then his strength gave out.

“You need to take the bag and run. Leave me here and go as far away as you can.”

“Why? What’s in the bag?”

“I’ll tell you later.”

“I don’t understand. I can’t just leave you.”

He grimaced as he held his side and she saw a trickle of blood run down his hand.

“You need to see a doctor. You’re bleeding.”

She ran to the kitchen and came back with several towels.

“Here, press these to your wounds.”

He closed his eyes and grimaced as she pulled his hand away from his side. The wound appeared deep, but, oddly, wasn’t bleeding heavily. She placed a folded towel over the injury, pressed and waited until he replaced his hand on the cloth.

“This injury is nothing. Don’t you understand? You. Have. To. Run. You must go and go far.”

Meet Author Cynthia Woolf. ..

Cynthia Woolf is the award winning and best-selling author of thirty historical western romance books and two short stories with more books on the way.

Cynthia loves writing and reading romance. Her first western romance Tame A Wild Heart, was inspired by the story her mother told her of meeting Cynthia’s father on a ranch in Creede, Colorado. Although Tame A Wild Heart takes place in Creede that is the only similarity between the stories. Her father was a cowboy not a bounty hunter and her mother was a nursemaid (called a nanny now) not the ranch owner.

Cynthia credits her wonderfully supportive husband Jim and her great critique partners for saving her sanity and allowing her to explore her creativity.

**Author Peek** Interview with A.J. Carella ETAL ~ Death, Lies & Duct Tape

**Author Peek** Interview with AJ CARELL

DEATH, LIES & DUCT TAPE

by

A.J. Carella, D.F. Bailey, Mark Dawson, Molly Greene,  Helen Hanson, Libby Fischer Hellmann, Seeley James, Catherine Lee, Mark McKay, Joe McNally, John Mefford, Kerry Donovan, Ian Sutherland, A.J. Stewart

INTRODUCING…A.J. Carella.

1. What appeals to you about the genre that you write?

It seems a strange thing to say, and one that could probably get me arrested in any other scenario (ha!), but I’ve always been interested in murder and serial killers. I think that’s what drew me to working for the police for many years and then, later, doing a law degree at university. My book shelves are full of books about the worst of the worst.

2. Are you a plotter or a pantser (one who writes “by the seat of your pants”)?

I’m a wannabe plotter. I start off with the best of intentions and plot the first few chapters and then I just dive in and see where the book takes me. I haven’t given up on the plotting though. My next book is a psychological thriller and I’m determined that I will plot than one out in full!

3. What is your favorite part of writing?

Typing THE END.

HARLEQUIN’S DECEPTION

The Naked Truth Series Book 1

BY CANDI FOX

EXCERPT

Harley awoke with a start. She was out of breath, panting heavily and her thighs were soaked.

Alarmed, she felt her neck. She didn’t feel any puncture wounds. She bounded out of the bed and into the bathroom. Flipping on the bathroom light she waited until her eyes adjusted before looking in the mirror.

There were he had bitten her in the dream were two marks that looked like freckles. Harley had a few freckles, many redheads did, but not there. She had never had freckles in that spot before.

What in the hell was going on? It had just been a dream. It had to be a dream. Shaken, she suddenly realized that her feet had not pained her when she ran to the bathroom. She sat on the counter bending her legs to look at her feet. One by one she looked. They were completely healed.

With shaking hands, she undid the bandages around her arm. The wound inflicted by the Gargoyle was also completely healed.

Harley wanted to know what was going on, and she wanted to know right now. She strode to the door, forgetting it was locked until she tried to get out.

A quick spell later and she was walking down a long hall to the stairway. By the time, she got to the bottom of the stairs, Zoe and her goons were there waiting.

“How did you get out of your room and what are you doing?” Zoe screeched.

“First, I thought I was a guest and not a prisoner. Secondly, I need to speak to Luciano and I need to speak to him right now.”

“You don’t give the orders around here. Get back to your room, before I take you back to your room. You won’t like it very much if I have to take you back.”

Harley was not fazed by her threats. She should have been, yet she was too angry to care one little bit.

“I want to speak with Luciano, now!”

Zoe advanced on her with a quickness that only vampires had. Harley was surprised when there was no impact. Instead, Aiden had a hold of Zoe.

“I don’t think the boss wants our guest harmed, Zoe.”

“Let me go jester, or I will rip your throat out.”

“Try it cupcake.” His lips curled into an evil smile. He started laughing. Immediately he dropped Zoe and stood behind Harley covering her ears. She could feel his chest rumbling with laughter. Seconds later, Zoe and crew were on the floor gasping in pain.

She could hear Zoe screaming. Blood coming out of her nose and ears. Aiden stopped as suddenly as he started and uncovered Harley’s ears.

“Follow me and I will take you to Luc.”

Harley followed him silently. She wasn’t sure what to think, and even less sure what to say. Aiden had not only saved her from being attacked by Zoe, he had also made sure she and her goons were incapacitated.

She did hope he didn’t get in hot water with Luciano for helping her out. A few minutes later he knocked on a set of double doors.

Everyone thought the Joker was just a comic book character until the paranormal world collided with reality ten years ago.

The comic book character came to life in the jesters with their supernatural powers. They gave life to everyone’s worst fears and fan’s greatest hopes.

These maniacal pranksters were the enforcers and assassins of what would become known as the dark side of a very real paranormal world.

Jesters were ruthless, they were cunning, they were nightmares come to life. Their bright green locks were imitated all over the world by their fans.

No, they did not have painted on clown faces. Though some of them were quite pale. They varied in shade from the lightest light to the darkest dark. Skin tone did not denote a jester.

They came in all shapes and sizes, looking human save for the green hair. If you couldn’t sense the paranormal energy there would be no way to know you were dealing with a jester and not a fan who dyed their hair.

Most people couldn’t figure it out until it was too late. Jesters weren’t exactly known for their social visits. Though if they weren’t there to kill you, they were there to party. Jesters were well known for their copious amounts of drug and alcohol use.

What Harley couldn’t figure out is why he had helped her. Perhaps her host had ordered him to keep her safe.

He knocked on the door. “Luc, our guest would like to have a word with you.”

“Enter.”

Luciano was lounging on a large black four poster bed. It was easily the biggest bed she had ever seen. He was wearing black silk trousers; the bedding was the same scarlet color of her hair. The same near blood color that her gown had been in the dream.

“What an unexpected surprise. I hope you are well.” He smiled at her.

Harley, still keyed up from the dream as well as finding herself fully healed, didn’t censor her response.

“What the hell is going on?”

“Whatever do you mean?”

Harley was a bit uncomfortable having this conversation in front of Aiden. At this point, her anger overrode the discomfort.

“I think you know what I mean, Luciano.”

“Luc, please call me Luc. We are, after all, acquainted.”

“Then you are not denying it?”

“Denying what exactly?”

“That you seduced me while I was sleeping.”

His smiled widened. “You had a good rest then?”

“I feel better than when I went to sleep. That doesn’t answer my question.”

“You mean your accusation.”

“Fine! It doesn’t answer my accusation.” Harley was becoming angrier with the exchange of words. He was playing a game and she wasn’t in the mood.

“Aiden, would you be so kind as to leave and close the door behind you.”

If Aiden wondered what was going on, he didn’t act like it. He simply left, closing the door.

“Harley, would you please come here and sit down.”

Harley was furious. She moved closer to the bed but didn’t take a seat. She liked having the advantage, any advantage would do at this point.

“I did seduce you in a way.”

“What do you mean?”

“I seduced you in your dreams. It was merely a representation of you and not the physical you.”

“You can dream walk?”

“Yes, among other things.”

“Why?”

“Why not? I find you very attractive and you happened to be under my roof. It was easy enough to find your dreams. I had just planned on talking to you, but then you showed up in that luscious silk nightie of yours.”

“Did you use any of your powers to take my ability to say no, away?”

He shook his head. She could tell by the look on his face, her question had surprised him.

“No. I wouldn’t do that. I don’t need to take an unwilling woman to bed, not even in a dream. Nor, would I.”

About Author Candi Fox…

Candi Fox, co-host of the wildly popular radio show Candi and Company with over 900 thousand listeners began her venture in the paranormal at the tender age of two, when she witnessed her first apparition. From that moment on the paranormal seemed to follow her. No matter where she moved, the house she lived in the house next door, or the house down the street always seemed to be haunted.

She often wondered if she drew the spirits to her. Little did she know that she was indeed a magnet of sorts. It wasn’t until she was in her late twenties that she found people who could not only explain her gifts, but would also help her hone them. Armed with this new knowledge she began to openly explore hauntings and other paranormal phenomena.

Growing up in Indiana lent her the opportunity to explore many famous haunted places including the Hannah House, which was once part of the Underground Railroad. A little over two years ago she moved to Tulsa, OK and has began to explore the haunted landscape in a new state.

Candi lives with her husband, and furry children in Tulsa. She is passionate about the occult, saving and rehabilitating horses, horseback riding, magic, all things mystical and has her Reiki Mastery.

She uses her own paranormal experiences as well as her own life traumas to write from a grounded and realistic perspective about subjects that are hard to talk about and even harder to feel for yourself.

Note from Candi: I have so many recipes that I both love and have created in my own kitchen. I love cooking for family and friends. I often provide enough that everyone brings home take away containers and no one cooks for a week.

Let me share a couple of the recipes I make for crowds.

GARLIC ALE PORK LOIN ROAST

5-7 lb pork loin roast

1 bottle of blue moon pale ale

10-12 cloves of peeled garlic

salt

pepper

crock pot

Remove any silver skin from the roast. This is normally done by the time we take them home. Using a pairing knife cut pockets in the roast inserting a clove of garlic into each pocket. Place roast in crock pot. Salt and Pepper to taste. Pour Ale over roast. Put on lid, turn on low, cook for 3-4 hours.

TURKEY ON THE GAS GRILL

Last year I ran out of oven space. I used my gas grill to cook my turkey.

12-16 lb fresh turkey

1 stick of softened butter

salt, pepper, garlic, sage

Mix herbs with softened butter, rub under skin. 1 cup of turkey stock. I injected this into the bird. Put the bird in a roasting bag inside a large roasting pan. I just put it on the grill, closed the lid, and watched the thermometer to regulate the temp. Cooked according to directions on the turkey’s tag.
