JUST ONE TOUCH

Slow Burn #5

BY MAYA BANKS

Blurb

Multiple #1 New York Times bestselling author Maya Banks continues her Slow Burn series with a suspenseful and sizzling story of a young woman who escapes a terrifying past… into a more uncertain future.

Raised in a strict religious cult since she was a young girl, Jenna has no connection to the outside world beyond vague flashes of memory that seem to be from another life. Memories she clings to when the cult leaders discover her extraordinary ability to heal-and punish her. Years held captive and forced to do the cult’s bidding have turned Jenna into a meek, timid woman…or so they think. In truth, she is merely biding her time, waiting for the perfect moment to escape.

When a terrified young woman tries to steal the SUV of Devereaux Security’s toughest recruit, Isaac’s anger quickly turns into a strange sort of protectiveness for the beautiful, bruised stranger. But when they are caught in a firestorm of bullets and Isaac is hit, he’s sure the end is near, until Jenna touches him and closes his wounds. As he tries to bring Jenna to safety, she refuses to tell him what danger haunts her or how she healed him, but Isaac vows to do whatever it takes to gain her trust…and her heart. Because with just one touch, Isaac knows he wants Jenna to be his–forever.

Isaac lay quietly in the dark, staring up at the ceiling, his thoughts consumed by the blue-eyed angel in the next room.

Would she be able to sleep? And if she was, did nightmares plague her dreams?

What was it about her that called to a part of his heart and soul that had never been breached before? He could come up with plenty of reasonable explanations, like the fact that she’d saved his life. Or that he’d made it his life’s work to protect the innocent. Or the fact that she was lost in a world of which she had little understanding or knowledge. Or the fact that she needed him.

But the simple truth was that he needed her every bit as much as she needed him, and he couldn’t come up with a reason that made any sense to him.

He’d come across plenty of victimized women who’d desperately needed help, his protection, DSS’s protection, but never had he been even remotely possessive of them. He’d done his job, and it never failed to enrage him and rile his protective instincts.

It was who and what he was; he’d never be a man to stand idly by while a woman was in danger or being abused.

But his angel wasn’t just any victim. She wasn’t just any woman in trouble and in need of protecting. And he had no idea what to do with that realization. He couldn’t even call it a realization, as if he’d just been struck by an epiphany as he lay there with no hope of sleeping. He’d known it from the moment she’d touched him, laid her hands on him, and he’d felt her in the very depths of his soul.

It wasn’t sexual—wholly—because he’d be a damn liar if he didn’t want her with every breath in his body. It was spiritual, and he felt like some hokey fool mooning over things like destiny and fate, but how could he call it anything else when from the moment she’d touched him he’d felt a connection that transcended any physical want or need?

And he was consumed with guilt for having sexual thoughts, lustful, needful thoughts, about a woman child whom he didn’t even know whether she was of an age for him to be having such thoughts about her. She had the innocence of a girl with the body of a desirable woman. Hell, it was obvious that no matter how many years she’d lived in this world, she’d spent the majority of them sheltered, sequestered from the real world. She was either enraptured with or terrified of things that he and others took for granted.

She’d been conditioned.

He frowned. It appeared that at a very early age she’d been indoctrinated. Brainwashed. Taught an alternate reality that was twisted to fit the agenda of the people who’d kept her under lock and key, and they’d proven they would go to extreme measures to retrieve her. She was a valuable asset to them. Irreplaceable.

He wondered when her powers had manifested themselves and as he pondered that question, he wondered if it was what had saved her from a far worse fate. Even the dumbest f**ks would realize the enormity of what they possessed in Jenna.

He rolled over to retrieve his cell and punched in Eliza’s number, knowing it was late and that Sterling likely wouldn’t be pleased, but Eliza of all people would understand his suspicions. He needed to bounce some ideas off her.

“This better be damn good,” Eliza growled into the phone. “Because I was about to be the recipient of the mother of all orgasms, and Wade is just pissed enough to throw my phone in the pool and withhold sex for a week.”

Isaac burst out laughing when he heard Sterling in the background.

“Jesus f**k, woman, can we keep our sex life and your goddamn job separate?”

Karen’s Killer Book Bench: Goodbye, My Love (Roxanne’s Ghost Saga Book 1) by Maggie Tideswell

GOODBYE, MY LOVE

Roxanne’s Ghost Saga Book 1

BY MAGGIE TIDESWELL

Blurb

Roxanne’s Ghost Saga, a new mystery series from internationally acclaimed author Maggie Tideswell, is set against the stunningly beautiful backdrop of modern day South Africa. It is a compelling ghost story of identical twin sisters’ love for the same man, and the magical connection the women share.

And the theme?  Nothing is what it seems.

Here, we move into the realms of the mists of time that could either reveal or conceal.

Book 1, Goodbye, My Love, sets the scene. It introduces country vet, Ben, his four-year-old autistic daughter and the would-be nanny, Jessica James. Jess’ interview with Ben for the nanny position takes place on Friday the 13th. An attraction between the two is immediate, which by all accounts isn’t entirely normal.

Ben’s three oddball sisters-in-law descend on him for the anniversary of his wife Roxanne’s death. They try to convince Ben that Roxanne isn’t dead, more than likely to put an end to whatever might develop between Ben and Jessica. But Ben knows that no one could have survived what led to Roxanne’s death.

His daughter, diagnosed as autistic, only sometimes does she display the symptoms that led to her diagnosis. Autism is not a disease, it’s a condition. A condition with symptoms that can’t be turned on and off at will. So…what is the child really suffering from?

Ben’s wife’s twin sister, Millicent, is accompanied by an overboard caricature of a psychic to Ben’s home in order to help them find Roxanne. Of course, Millicent isn’t happy to find Jess already in Ben’s house—trouble is imminent. But only as far as Ben’s ancient housekeeper, will allow her to. What does the housekeeper know that will keep Millicent’s ruffled feathers under control?

More importantly…

Where is Roxanne?

Does anyone live here?

The house looked deserted, kind of spooky. Jess couldn’t see any other houses nearby. Sally had not been kidding—this was a rather isolated place.

Dilapidated outbuildings behind the sprawling house looked as unused as the house itself. Some sort of creeper covered most of the buildings except the house—it looked far too fragile to bear the added weight.

There were what looked like turrets on each end of the house, and a domed one in between. That might be a skylight. Jess worried her bottom lip. What century was this place built?

Lightning played over the majestic mountains behind the house, silhouetting it against the darkening sky, but down here in the valley, the late sun cast long shadows over the overgrown garden.

It all fit so well with Friday the thirteenth, because this was creepy. What had she been thinking? She should have postponed the interview until Monday. One weekend surely wouldn’t have made that much of a difference.

Jess studied the map on her tablet, which she held propped up against the steering wheel. This could be the right place, but she had thought that about both the previous two places, and neither had turned out to be Weltevreden. Neither had been as eerie as this place, either.

No, this couldn’t be it. Tapping her finger against the edge of the tablet, she studied the house again. This whole thing smacked of a Friday the thirteenth Sally-prank.

Sally, her bestie since high school, ran a very successful employment agency. The professional image notwithstanding, she still loved pranks of any kind—she would never outgrow them.

Her eyes had lit up that morning when Jess sat in front of her desk, mugs of coffee steaming on the polished wood between them. The platter of doughnuts had been for Jess’ benefit. Sally and her perpetual dieting.

“Something different,” Sally mused, tapping her pen against her front teeth, then pressed a button on her laptop, and reached for the sheet of paper the printer spewed out. “This might be just the thing. It came in just now.” She’d tossed her platinum curls over her shoulder, grinning at Jess.

Another thing Sally would never outgrow, her Barbie-doll looks.

“It has my name on it, then.” Jess leaned her forearms on Sally’s desk. “Tell me, tell me, tell me.” She grinned back, barely able to contain her excitement. “Does it involve a man?”

Neither Sally nor Jess had found their Mr. Full Potential yet, although both had been ready for wedded bliss, the kids and the house in the suburbs thing, a long time ago.

“As a matter of fact it does, but he doesn’t seem to be in the market. It says here that a nanny is required for a four-year-old autistic girl. Dr. Arnold specifically requested that only older women be put forward for the position.”

“How old-fashioned. Where is this job?”

“In the Wellington area.” Sally frowned at the monitor.

“There you go. He won’t find anybody qualified to work that far from Cape Town. It is his child, I presume?”

“It is, but do you seriously want to give this a go?” Sally looked worried as only she could. It went with the Barbie look. “I’m intrigued. What kind of doctor is he?”

“A veterinary surgeon. And a widower, it says here. That is all the information I have for you, I’m afraid.” Sally sat back in her chair. “I shouldn’t disregard so specific an instruction, Jess, but just this once, I’ll make an exception. Then it’s up to you to change his mind for him. It’ll be in his own best interest in the end.” She passed an information sheet across the desk. “I’ll tell Dr. Arnold to expect you at four. I’d pack an overnight bag if I were you. Call me, okay?”

Now, sitting in front of the house that might or might not belong to Dr. Ben Arnold, Jess didn’t feel all that confident anymore. And it didn’t really sound like a prank, unless Sally had kept some information to herself.

There was only one way to find out, and that was to knock on the door and ask.

If there was anybody in the house to ask.

Switching the engine off, she consulted the rear-view mirror to apply some color to her lips and pat her shoulder length bob into place. She took a moment to admire the rich auburn color in the late afternoon sunshine and sighed.

I don’t know about this. It was a long way from Cape Town.

What did people do around here for fun?

Trying her best to ignore the goose bumps on her forearms, she opened the car door and stepped out. Her heels sank into the gravel, her shadow stretching all the way back to the gate.

Only when she turned toward the house did she see the man sitting on the top step in the shadows, his shoulder against the railing, one knee pulled up with his arm resting on top of it. He wasn’t wearing a shirt, and it looked as if his feet were bare, too.

Was he there a moment ago? Why didn’t I see him?

Smoothing her palms down her red pencil skirt, she started toward the house and the man on the steps. If he wasn’t Dr. Arnold, maybe he could give her directions.

Taking a deep breath, Jess reminded herself that she wasn’t superstitious about this Friday the thirteenth nonsense. People liked to scare themselves with the silliest things. What was supposed to happen on this day? It was a day like any other.

That certainly looked like a real man on the steps. He wasn’t going to bite her. Today being a Friday and the thirteenth meant nothing, but now that she’d thought of it, the idea would stick with her like the taste of garlic.

Leaving the car door open for a quick escape should she need it, she’d gone no more than a few steps when she heard something other than the crunch of her shoes on the gravel. It sounded suspiciously like a dog whining.

She slowly turned her head, curling her fingers into the fabric of her skirt. It couldn’t be a dog. She hadn’t seen any dogs when she drove through the gate.

I don’t do dogs!

Her breath hitched in her throat when she saw them. They were right next to her car, beside the door she’d deliberately left open, a whole pack of them. Their lips curled away from their teeth, their tongues lolling out the sides of their mouths, dripping saliva onto the gravel. Yellowish eyes watched every move she made.

Where did they come from?

How many were there?

They cut her off from the safety of the Fiesta!

REFUGE FOR MASTERMINDS

A Stranje House Novel Book 3

BY KATHLEEN BALDWIN

Blurb

The stakes in this game of spies are life and death.

Lady Jane Moore has a secret. A secret that must be kept buried. If anyone discovered the truth, her life at Stranje House would crumble. And with Napoleon Bonaparte threatening to invade England, everyone at Stranje House is already in mortal danger.

There ís a traitor in the house. Someone is sneaking information to Napoleonís spies, Lady Daneska and Ghost. Jane is determined to find out who it is before suspicions rip apart the bonds of friendship at Stranje House. Her desperate hunt for the traitor ensnares a brash young American inventor, Alexander Sinclair, Robert Fultonís nephew, into an ambush that puts his life in danger. Sinclair is the most maddening young man in all of Christendom, a sharp-tongued rascal with boorish manners, but Lady Jane cannot bear the thought of the golden-haired genius being harmed.

Is Jane enough of a mastermind to save Alexander, her friends at Stranje House, and possibly England itself?

Fans of Gail Carriger, Patricia Wrede, and Caroline Stevermer will love this Regency-era alternate history filled with spunky heroines, handsome young lords, and dastardly villains.

“Baldwin has a winning series here: her characters are intriguing and fully rendered.”

– Stacey Comfort, Booklist

“Refuge for Masterminds moves at a fast pace from the first page and doesnít stop. Although it is written with a young adult audience in mind, it is a fun and enjoyable novel and will also appeal to adult readers.”

Not only will you and I occasionally learn how to make something new and delicious, but we’ll get a chance to check out some wonderful authors. Introducing author, GRACE RISATA, and her favorite recipe for CHOCOLATE ÉCLAIR TORTE!

MY DIRTY VACATION: AN ALPHA MALE MAFIA COMEDY ADVENTURE

Dirty Detour Book 2

BY GRACE RISATA

BLURB

“When you think of Las Vegas, what comes to mind? Most likely it’s fine dining, extravagant shows, and lots of gambling. Not in my world. Not when you’re surrounded by alpha males with a penchant for violence who ignore your meticulously crafted itinerary and expect you to ‘go with the flow.’ Why does nothing EVER turn out like I plan?”

Come along for the ride with ex-mafia enforcer Rocky, his germaphobe girlfriend Violet, and a few of their friends as they take a little excursion to fabulous Las Vegas. Emotions run high, loyalties are tested, and danger lurks around every corner. With new villains emerging and game changing opportunities presented, their vacation is anything but relaxing.

Please note: This story contains a zombie survival paintball course, popcorn eating fish, several curse words (the heroine has a fondness for swearing), and a few descriptive bedroom scenes. Vegas has a tendency to bring out the wild side in some of us…and things that happen in Sin City can get pretty exciting.

This 96,500 word full length novel is the second book in the Dirty Detour series, but can be read and understood as a stand-alone story. Each and every one of my books has a Happily Ever After, no cheating, no cliff hangers, and a butt load of humor. Sit back, strap in, and enjoy the journey!

WHY ARE VACATIONS SO SHORT?

BY GRACE RISATA

Editorial Note: Edited for language.

EXCERPT

I don’t do very well with vacations.  I know, you’re thinking to yourself, “What the hell is her problem?”  I’ll tell you what my problem is…

My husband wanted to get away from work for a few days and he suggested going to the beach and renting a condo for five days.  Our plane would leave at 7am on the last day, so that really doesn’t count as a day.  The plane arrived at 3pm on the first day, so I’m not counting that either.  What’s my problem then?

Packing:  I ran through my house like a crazy person trying to find everything I might need for three full days away.  What did I want to pack?  Everything.  We’re hoarders and we can’t leave home for five minutes without the insane need to bring everything with us.  A million panic scenarios run through my mind.  What if I spill something on my shirt and I run out of clothes? (That’s why they have laundromats).  What if I get sick and need cough medicine/cough drops/a thermometer/anti-biotic cream? (That’s why they have grocery stores and pharmacies).  What if I get hungry on the plane and don’t want to pay $4 for a small bag of crackers? (oh s**t, better bring food for the plane!)  I usually ending up needing NOTHING that I actually packed and everything that I didn’t pack.  (This time I could have used a different bathing suit.  My husband asked me why the hell my bikini bottoms were hanging off my ass to the point that it looked like I s**t myself.  I had no reasonable answer other than, “DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO FIND ONE OF THESE THINGS THAT FITS?!”)

TRAVEL: I’m not a fan of the airplane and sitting next to strangers.  I booked a window seat.  I paid EXTRA for this.  (Okay…I had to pay extra for EVERYTHING on the flight…we each got one “personal bag” like a purse or a small backpack, but the carry on cost EXTRA.  Since I wasn’t going to pay for TWO carry-ons because I’m insanely cheap, that meant I had to cram a house worth of stuff into one purse, one backpack, and ONE carry on.  I also had to pay extra to choose my seats.  I’m honestly surprised they didn’t charge me for the use of the oxygen on the plane).  So we board the plane by groups and for some odd reason my group went first and my husband’s group went third.  Totally weird.  I got to our row first and I see some lady sitting in my window seat.  I said, “Um…I think you’re in the wrong seat” and probably had a very grouchy look on my face.  She pointed to her leg (in a cast) and said, “They let me sit here.”  Well I can’t argue with her, now can I?   She was also in her 60s so I didn’t throw down.  My husband gets on the plane and he’s all, “who cares?  Sit in the aisle!” and he’s consoling her about her leg like it’s a f***ing heart transplant or something.  “Are you okay ma’am?  How did that happen?  Let me know if I’m taking up too much room.”  EYE ROLL!

I’m part of the 99% and NOT the ONE PERCENT:  The condo that my husband found on AirBnB was absolutely amazing.  I’m talking granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, a breathtaking view of the lagoon behind the condo, not one but TWO screened in balcony porches, and walls that are not REALLY walls but instead are floor to ceiling window doors (I guess you’d call them sliding glass doors…I’m a writer…I should know words to describe things!) facing the lagoon.  Not sure if it was a lagoon or a marina or a canal or what.  It was fancy water that boats traveled to and fro upon.  I have none of these things at home.  And I want them ALL.  I’m sorry, I forgot to mention the most important part.  There was a swimming pool.  No.  There were TWO swimming pools.  And no one was using them.  So it was like I had my own private pool for THREE STRAIGHT DAYS!  I swam laps and pretended I was a movie star.  Okay…that’s a lie.  I pretended I was Michael Phelps and did every single swimming stroke I knew and some that I made up.  While I did this, my mind wandered and I came up with a new book plot.  For the present time, we’ll call it “Sexy Condo Story.”

Food is Weird:  The food on vacation is very hit or miss and I usually love it or hate it.  I got expensive shrimp that tasted dry and flavorless.  I got cheaper shrimp that tasted amazing because they added mango salsa on top.  I want to live in a place that has mangos and salsa combined.  I currently do not live in such a fantasy land.

I annoy the native species:  While this is not a problem for me, per se, it annoys my husband to no end.  I feel the need to get as close as possible to every wildlife creature and take pictures of it like I’m a National Geographic Photographer.  No pelican, gecko, or bird was safe from my camera.  At one point I threw a bread crust to the bird on the beach and got in trouble.  My husband said, “You’re going to KILL IT!  That bird can’t digest all the preservatives in white bread!”  Oh really?  Then why the f**k did he lunge for my bread crust like he hadn’t eaten in a week and it was as appealing as shrimp covered in mango salsa?  Mmhmm…that bird devoured my bread crust and came back for more.  Unfortunately I had none to give him.  Sorry bird friend, that sandwich was too good to share any more with you.

I’m obsessed with time:  What time is it here?  What time is it at home?  Are we missing meals?  I’m not hungry because we’re on vacation and my time schedule is messed up.  Should I be hungry?  Why am I going to sleep so early?  Why am I waking up so early?  Is my phone the right time?  Did it switch over?  Are we late for the flight?  Why are we so early for the flight?  Why do I care?  I’m neurotic, that’s why.

I dislike coming home again after the vacation:  It seems like you plan and get excited for the vacation for MONTHS… and then before you know it, you spent all that money and the damn thing is over with and you’re stuck back at work staring at the clock thinking to yourself, “Exactly 48 hours ago I was swimming in my private pool living like a rock star and now I’m answering phones and forcing myself to be polite to customers.  How the hell did this happen?  Why did I come back?

Sigh.  Tis better to have vacationed and returned home to the bland routine than to have never vacationed at all.

In case you’re in the mood for a vacation, but can’t get the time off work or don’t have the extra money right now…maybe you can take a mental vacation without ever leaving home.  What the hell am I talking about?  Take a trip to a fictional world full of amazing characters you haven’t met yet…READ A BOOK!

Note from Grace: This is a recipe that was given to me by my mother-in-law.  If you’ve read my first book (My Dirty Detour), “Dottie” is modeled after her.

This recipe makes enough for a 9×13 pan and it’s always requested at all my family gatherings.  It’s extremely easy to make and requires no baking.

CHOCOLATE ÉCLAIR TORTE

Ingredients:

1 box of graham crackers

2 (3 1/2 ounce) packages vanilla instant pudding

3 1⁄2 cups milk

8 ounces whipped topping

1 tub of chocolate frosting

Directions:

Grease the bottom of a of 9×13 pan and line the bottom with the graham crackers.
Mix pudding and milk.
Fold in whipped topping.
Pour a layer of pudding mixture over crackers.
Add another layer of crackers, then pudding mix again then final layer of crackers.
Spread chocolate frosting over top.  Works best if you microwave it first for 15 seconds so it can just pour over the layer of graham crackers.
Chill in refrigerator overnight.

The Walker Brothers Book 2

BY AMANDA ADAMS

Blurb

Sometimes, even true love needs a kick in the…
Claire Miller fell in love with Jake in the third grade. Years later, one hot night of reckless passion changed things between them forever. Jake rocked her world, but Claire had plans for her life. Knowing she could never be what he needed, she let him go and has missed him every day since.
Jake Walker knew the first time he saw Claire, when he was nine years old, that he wanted to marry her. At seventeen, he let her go. But seven years later, the sight of her hit him like a punch to the gut. Every cell in his body demanded that she was ‘The One’. But can he convince Claire?

ALONE WITH YOU

The Walker Brothers Book 2

BY AMANDA ADAMS

Excerpt

Jake looked her over, from the dusty toes of her hiking boots to the wild bits of hair that had escaped her French braid. She looked a mess and she knew it. When she was about to run for cover, he turned his attention to the horses and walked up to greet them through the openings in side of the beat-up white trailer.

“Hey there, boy. I bet you’re ready to get out of there.” Jake pulled a treat of some kind from the front pocket of his jeans and Widowmaker whinnied and talked back, as if Jake could speak horse. Hell, maybe he could. Jake walked back to her and held out his hand to take Widowmaker’s lead rope from her. She handed it over as Mindy pulled the pin and swung open the back of the slant-load trailer.

Claire stepped back and let Jake take over unloading the stallion with Mindy’s help. Eager to be out of the trailer, Widowmaker walked out with Jake a hell of a lot faster than he’d gone in. Typical. Claire tried to ignore the scene as Jake and Mindy both patted and soothed the horse once they had him on the ground. A handful of treats, and the stallion followed Mindy to the pasture like a docile pony.

If only all men were so easily tamed.

Claire sighed and hopped up into the trailer with Starlight’s bright red lead rope in hand. She ducked under the center gate and clipped her mare onto the lead. Jake hopped up behind her to help and she nodded to him to indicate she was ready for him to open the middle gate.

So easy, slipping back into her old rhythm with him. She still knew every move he was going to make before he made it, every step and every look, and every motion of those big, strong hands.

She even knew he was going to take Starlight’s lead from her before he did it. What she didn’t anticipate was the flare of anger his take-charge attitude inspired. That ire lent some steel to her spine and she squashed her longing for him like a spider under a boot heel. She’d left for a reason. She needed to remember that. Nothing had changed. “I’ve got her. Thanks.”

“I can lead her out.”

“I said, I’ve got her.” Claire refused to look him in the eye and didn’t bother asking herself where all this irrational fire was coming from. She knew exactly why she was about to lose her mind, and it was the reason she had avoided coming to the ranch all these years. Seeing Jake again, now, made the raw edges of her life bleed all over again. It was like she’d never left.

“All right. Don’t get your panties in a bunch.”

“What?” He did not just say that.

“Nothing.” Jake turned away and walked back up into the trailer to secure the center gate, then hopped out, closed the gate, latched and pinned it for her drive home. Such a gentleman, which made her feel like screaming on the inside.

She tugged on Starlight’s lead and the horse followed her in the direction Mindy had taken the stallion. The dirt trail had been worn into the ground by tractor and truck tires, and led to a pasture about a quarter mile from the main house.

Starlight nudged her in the side of the head and Claire absently reached over to pat her old friend on the nose. Jake hadn’t been the only thing she’d missed. She and Starlight had been best friends since she was thirteen. The mare had arrived at her dad’s small farm with a bright white bow tied around her neck on Claire’s birthday. In the horse-breeding world, Starlight was worthless, the unplanned foal of an old quarter horse sire and an American Saddlebred dam.

Her dad had laughed and said that Starlight’s mother had gone slumming. Claire didn’t care where the horse had come from, only that Starlight was a beautiful chestnut with white feet and a white star on her forehead, and she loved to run. Her parents’ small property backed to national forest lands which she’d explored for hours, covered hundreds of miles. With Jake. Always, things came back to Jake.

Claire rubbed Starlight’s nose and picked up the pace. All she had to do was avoid Jake and get out of town as quickly as possible. That was the only way she could keep her head on straight. Her heart was a lost cause, and had been for years. But real love and real life didn’t mix, at least not for her. Her job was her life now and that was just the way things worked out.

Claire chanced a glance back over her shoulder to see Jake leaning up against the split rail fence, arms crossed over that massive chest, and his hat back on his head, watching her walk away. This time, there was no confusion or hurt in his eyes. Those blue eyes of his were cold and hard. Unforgiving.

Well, tough shit. She’d done what she thought was best. And she’d do it again, because some things never changed. And Jake Walker was one of them.

Starlight whinnied and shoved into her hand. Claire sighed and turned back around.

Love was such a bitch.

RECTIFY

A Hidden Hearts Novel #6

BY MARY CRAWFORD

Excerpt

THIRTEEN. IT DOESN’T SEEM POSSIBLE that Ketki is thirteen. Yet, as she is trying to describe the game theory behind an arcade game to Shelby, the graces of womanhood are trying to overtake the child who was once there.

My child.

Ketki crosses her arms and scowls. “Mom! I told you to go right! Why did you go left?”

I suck in a breath as anguish slips past my carefully constructed mask.

Shelby shrugs and says, “I thought there was a shortcut there. So, sue me. I’m hungry anyway.”

Mark rolls his eyes as he responds, “These days, it seems like I’m always feeding one or both of you. You guys are about to eat me out of house and home.”

Shelby grins. “It’s Ketki’s birthday. We’re supposed to be eating like there’s no tomorrow. After all, you ordered enough pizza to feed an army.”

Mark bends down and kisses Shelby right in the middle of the pizza parlor as if there is not another soul around. I have to look away as a soft bemused look crosses his face and he says, “You’re right, there’s nothing I like better than taking care of my girls. I love the fact that you watch out for Ketki.”

I know Mark doesn’t mean anything by those words, but to me, they feel like a thousand scalpels to my heart.

I should be the one that Ketki calls Mom — but I’m not. I gave up that right.

I should be the one Mark is kissing — but I’m not. I gave up that right too.

I should be the one playing arcade games with Ketki — but I’m not. I forfeited that privilege more than a decade ago. Now, I just sit on the sidelines and watch as another woman lives the life I gave up.

Most of the time, I can live with my choices. They were made a long time ago in a different place and time in a different state of mind. Then wasn’t now. Today, it’s all just too hard to watch. Mark is a man who used to be my best friend and who is the kindest, most gentle man I ever knew — although he can be sharp-tongued and blunt at times. I watch with a profound sense of regret as he cuddles his new fiancé and gently kisses her as he watches our daughter’s antics in the arcade. My heart squeezes painfully as I have to come to grips with the fact that the scene of domestic tranquility used to be my life. I had that life and I gave it all up.

Over the years, I tucked that decision far away in the back of my mind. I tried to pretend that the happily ever after white picket fence life that I had and gave up never existed. I gave myself an imaginary lobotomy. I had the before and after version of Tayanita. That approach served me well for almost a decade; but then fate intervened and I was thrown back into Mark’s life and I could no longer pretend that Mark and Ketki never existed.

Ketki exists in beautiful three-dimensional living color and it’s been impossible to adequately explain to her what I don’t quite understand myself. How do I explain to my inquisitive teenage daughter how I could just walk away from her when she was not even yet a toddler? How do I explain the debilitating effects of postpartum depression and the overwhelming impact of Mark’s law school schedule on our lives? I completely lost myself and my identity in being a mother and I was sure I could never succeed. I had a dream of what being a mom was like and when it turned out not to be like that, I felt completely and utterly hopeless. There just aren’t enough words to explain the why.

MATED TO THE CYBORGS

Interstellar Brides: The Colony Book 2

BY GRACE GOODWIN

Blurb

FBI Agent Kristin Webster has spent the last eight years tracking and taking down the worst of humanity. She’s seen too much to believe she could ever trust a human man, but the promise of a perfect match through the Coalition’s Interstellar Brides Program has her settling into the testing chair to be matched to her alien mate. But her match isn’t a male from a distant planet, but two scarred Prillon warriors on the Colony. And when warriors begin to disappear, Kristin will take matters into her own hands.

Captains Hunt and Tyran have been waiting too long for a mate to allow her to risk her life chasing evil. But their defiant little human won’t listen. They are determined to tame her, claim her, keep her safe…no matter the cost.

MATED TO THE CYBORGS

Interstellar Brides: The Colony Book 2

BY GRACE GOODWIN

Editorial Note: Edited for language.

Excerpt

Captain Tyran, The Colony (His new mate has just arrived via transport and is still unconscious.)

I heard footsteps, but didn’t look away from the fragile female. I couldn’t. I couldn’t even move, not until Hunt called my name.

With long strides, I closed the distance to my mate and knelt down beside her. She looked like she was asleep, but was she—

My fingers went to her pale neck, felt along the soft skin for her pulse, felt it sure and strong. Her hair was pale, a faint golden color and I wondered if her eyes would be fair and amber, like Hunt’s, or an exotic shade I’d never seen before. Her face was delicate, heart-shaped and beautiful with full pink lips and long lashes resting on high cheekbones. She was perfect. The most beautiful female I’d ever seen. I met Hunt’s pale gaze and the corner of his mouth tipped up. Was he laughing at me for checking her pulse?

Did I care?

No.

A blanket appeared over my shoulder and I unfolded it, covered her and Hunt pulled his shirt free from underneath, donned it again as I lifted her carefully into my arms, the soft material protecting her modesty and also keeping her warm.

She was soft and curvy. While I couldn’t see much of her form beneath the blanket, I could feel her, the plush softness of her curves. I was eager to explore every part of her. My c*^* grew hard at her feminine scent.

No one would see her bare but Hunt and me. No one.

“Should we take her to the med station?” Hunt asked. “It’s standard on battleships for brides to receive a medical exam upon arrival.”

While I knew he was putting her wellbeing first, I found myself instantly possessive and I wanted no one, not even a doctor, to touch her. I understood the philosophy behind the exams. Most were concerned about fertility and injury during transport. The practice had become common hundreds of years ago, when transport was not so well perfected, and often, the trip through space would cause permanent damage to fragile females. But I didn’t care about breeding our mate, I only cared about bedding her. Pleasing her. Easing the loneliness and pain both Hunt and I knew too well.

She was mine. Mine. No doctor would touch her. No other should see her unconscious and vulnerable. I wanted to rip the governor’s eyes out for gazing upon her. I now understood what an Atlan felt like when his beast was upon him. Possessive. Protective. Unreasonable. I was being irrational, and I didn’t care.
