Born the same year as the Russians launched Sputnik, I confidently expected that by the time I reached adulthood, the human race would have a pioneer colony on the Moon and be heading off towards Mars. So I was at a loss to know what to do once I realised the Final Frontier wasn’t an option and rather lost my head - I tried a lot of jobs I didn’t and married a totally unsuitable man.

Now I've finally come to terms with the fact that I’ll never leave Earth, I have a lovely time writing science fiction novels and teaching Creative Writing. I live in Littlehampton on the English south coast with a wonderful husband and a ridiculous number of books.

That's normally an indication that I've taken a wrong turn somewhere and the story isn't working, so I have to back up and work out where the narrative arc started heading into a black hole, unpick it and start again.

Like everyone else, there are times when I sit at the screen and nothing comes because I'm too tired/worried/real life is overwhelming - and when that happens I do myself a favour and go and hoover up some Lego or dust the bath...(less)

Yes - I know that sounds flippant, but it isn't meant to. I love the process of writing and cannot imagine Life without it. In fact I'm strongly encouraged by Himself to sit down and write after a few days because he claims (perish the thought!) that I'm a tad crabby without my writing fix.(less)

The Trials of Koli by M.R. Carey

The previous book, The Book of Koli, was solely in our young protagonist’s head, and the major difference here is that we also learn of what befalls the small community that exiled Koli, as we are also in the first-person viewpoint of Spinner. She fe ...more

This further set of adventures takes Dan right out of his comfort zone – not much in the way of forests and trees out on the Fens. And he’s staying over with Fin’s family – people he doesn’t want to let down, particularly as he isn’t completely sure ...more

Earth Prime by Janet Edwards

While the contents give a sense that these are standalone short stories, or novelettes, I read them as an ongoing story as they followed on one from the other, covering the same narrative timeframe, except for the story at the end. These stories and ...more

The way the apparently innocent flu mutates into something far more lethal is both scary and plausible – particularly now. I thought the worldbuilding was particularly good, but then that’s Beukes’ superpower, anyway. A post-apocalyptic America where ...more

This one is written in first-person viewpoint (I), across several protagonists. It starts with what should be a routine call for help – and turns into something far more stressful and unexpected. I loved the initial scene-setting and how lethal accel ...more

Deadly Waters by Dot Hutchison

One of the major reasons I don’t read more murder mysteries, is that I dislike the casual way in which pretty young girls are often horribly murdered, often after being raped or assaulted. I’m aware this is a dynamic in reality – but there are books ...more

The strapline for this one is: Agatha Raisin meets Sookie Stackhouse, with croquet and zombies. And it’s spot on. Toni is a quirkier, younger version of Agatha, while the paranormal backdrop, though firmly set in rural England, is peopled with charac ...more

It takes skill to nail the characterisation and pacing in a novella, because there is nowhere to hide and it is a measure of Chambers’ technical ability that she nails it. I loved this one and was very moved by the ending, which left me with tears in ...more
