Quite often I get ideas when walking or garden - and these days I'm able to dictate them onto my phone to be transferred onto the computer when I get indoors. But this idea was initially for a short story and came to me in a dream, which happens quite often.

Stories and ideas are always constantly tumbling around my head - it becomes very uncomfortable not to write them down. So the issue tends to be - which project do I work on next.

I am putting the finishing touches my novel 'Dying For Space', which is the sequel to my recently released novel 'Running Out of Space'. It takes Elizabeth's journey to the next phase of her life, when she joins a mercenary force... I'm hoping to release this book in December.

Get that first draft written and resist the temptation to keep going back over the opening pages each time. If you see some errors or minor problems, unless they affect your narrative, make a note in the margin and keep going. Once you have a first draft written, you have something to work with. And the next piece of advice - be aware that writing the first draft is only half of the process. It is the rewrites and editing that turns your book into a finished product that is entertaining to read.

Writing. Yes - I know that sounds flippant, but it isn't meant to. I love the process of writing and cannot imagine Life without it. In fact I'm strongly encouraged by Himself to sit down and write after a few days because he claims (perish the thought!) that I'm a tad crabby without my writing fix.

I'm very lucky in that I don't suffer with a scarcity of ideas. However sometimes in the middle of writing a book, I will come skidding to a halt. That's normally an indication that I've taken a wrong turn somewhere and the story isn't working, so I have to back up and work out where the narrative arc started heading into a black hole, unpick it and start again.
Like everyone else, there are times when I sit at the screen and nothing comes because I'm too tired/worried/real life is overwhelming - and when that happens I do myself a favour and go and hoover up some Lego or dust the bath...
