Book Review: Yuletide Mishaps

Book Review by Toni G. Sinns
Book Title: Yuletide Mishaps
Author: A. L. Flagg
About the Author:  A.L. Flagg was born and raised in southern New England. She has been writing since she was nine years old, and has an explosive imagination. She favors writingin the Romantic Comedy and Supernatural genres. She feeds off the support from her friends and family to strive on with her work. She currently resides in Massachusetts and continues doing what she loves the most.
Book Description: When Abby goes home for Christmas to her parent's home in Alder Creek, she is surprised when her latest love interest is there... with her sister. In Yuletide Mishaps, there is one calamity after another for Abby, but in the true spirit of Christmas, her family bonds grow stronger, and the love that she has shared with Ben Sheridan will be put to test. Will they be able to put this behind them and move on, or will they deny themselves a love that could stand the test of time.

My ReviewStory Line: Abby is a business owner of a small but successful diner. When two random customers, Ben and Dean, come to lunch Abby takes the table. It is almost instantly that Abby and Ben find the other attractive. After a run in with the grocery store Abby agrees to go on a date with Ben. The date goes wonderful. Now it’s Friday and Abby goes to meet her family and sister Lucy at the family home for Christmas. Lucy brings a mystery guy with her who happens to be Ben.  Read the book to find out how Christmas and the time after Christmas go.
Characters: Abby, Lucy, Ben, Dean, David, Nathan, Lauren, Chely, Brad, Jane, Jacob, Bella and the rest of her family.
My Favorite Character: Abby and David. I love strong women characters that take their life in their own hands. Abby does this by working hard and giving to others. Not only does she run her own business but she also gives to many people that are less fortunate then she is. I also love David because he is truly a best friend. Always there with good advice and able to talk sense into you when you are in upsetting situations, everyone needs a friend like David.
My Favorite Part: At dinner when Abby says she wants to open a shelter and his sister Lucy looks down at the idea because homeless people don’t need the help. Abby goes off on her sister along with a few other people at dinner (who also go off on Lucy). I love watching people stand up for their beliefs and defending those who can’t defend themselves.
Full Concept: Each page draws you more and more into the holiday mishaps of the family learning more about each character and their views and stances in life, questioning why and more. I couldn’t stop reading and smiling. I love how upbeat and even in times of disagreement how humorous this story is.
Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars. Truly an unfolding love story that will touch your heart and make you smile all while mentally beating up each character for how they deal with the situation and the stupid choices they make or things they say.

Book Review: Agent of Artifice

Book Review by Toni G. Sinns
Book Title: Agent of Artifice
Author: S. Evan Townsend
About the Author: S. Evan Townsend has been called 'America's Unique Speculative Fiction Voice.' Evan is a writer living in central Washington State. After spending four years in the U.S. Army in the Military Intelligence branch, he returned to civilian life and college to earn a B.S. in Forest Resources from the University of Washington. In his spare time he enjoys reading, driving (sometimes on a racetrack), meeting people, and talking with friends. He is in a 12-step program for Starbucks addiction. Evan lives with his wife and two sons, one in high school the other in college. He also has a son attending the University of Washington in biology. He enjoys science fiction, fantasy, history, politics, cars, and travel.
Book Description: They live among us. We know they are there. No government can control them; no authority can stop them. Some are evil. Some are good. All are powerful. They inhabit our myths and fairy tales. But what if they were real, the witches, wizards, and fairy godmothers? What if they were called "adepts" and were organized into guilds for mutual protection and benefit? And what if they started mucking around with the affairs of "lessers" (that is, those humans not able to match their powers)? During the height of the Cold War, Michael Vaughan is a rogue without a guild. He survives by working for the CIA as NOC (Non-Official Cover). Shortly after the funeral of President Joe Kennedy, Jr., he is sent to Cuba to assassinate Castro. There he finds himself in a cat-and-mouse game with adepts working for Fidel

My Review
Story Line: Moving from city to city to protect himself, help his friend and find out what is going on Michael finds himself in an adventure so unreal he is caught off guard at times. With his senses always on high and his mind quick at everything it’s no wonder that he can keep his cool even with radioactive zombies around.
Characters: Vaughan and many more.
My Favorite Character: Michael Vaughan. He is funny and smart and quick. Strong and quick on his feet.
My Favorite Part: I like a part in Chicago where he meets with a Mobster to get his weekly pay. While they talk you learn more and more about Vaughan and his situation. You also learn that not everyone is out to get you when the rest of the world is.
Full Concept: Enjoyable. I loved reading and wondering what the next move was going to be. Who was going to be involved and where we would find our person going next. Each location brought new insight, new wonder and new challenges to figure out. Bringing us closer to the end and yet still bringing us more questions.
Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars. I’m not sure if the author was trying or not but I found this story very humorous. Yes it was also filled with action and wonder but so many things had me laughing it was a wonderful read.

Spring, Summer, and Kites

One of the things I will never grow out of is the joy of flying a kite. Rather you buy one or make one from sticks and paper at home. It is really hard to explain how a simple act can make one smile so much. And it is a great thing to get the whole family outside on a beautiful day. Make a picnic out of it. Pack yourself a cooler, bring some blankets, and stuff to eat on of course. Pack a couple of kites get in the car and go to a nice meadow or hillside on a fairly decent day with mild breeze. Relax and enjoy the sunshine and fresh air. Perfect time of year to do it. With summer only a month and a week away.

Book Review: Hammer of Thor

Book Review by Toni G. Sinns
Book Title: Hammer of Thor
What if they were called "adepts" and used talismans to increase their power? The most powerful talisman in the world is The Hammer of Thor and Hitler stole it from its rightful owners, the Valkyrie. When American adept Francis Kader is reluctantly drawn into the effort to retrieve the Hammer from the Nazis, he begins a journey that leads him to a confrontation with Thor himself. Can a mere human hope to defeat an immortal god?

My Review
Story Line: Kader moves away from the bitter cold of Minneapolis to the warmth of San Francisco. Shortly after his move he meets a lady that will start him on a journey that never ends. Each event he finds himself in the middle of leads him to another event. Using his powers and skills to find a way to get through each obstacle he faces. Along with the friends he meets and gains along the way to his encounter with Thor himself.
Characters: Kader and many more.
My Favorite Character: Dagmar. Or Dorothy. Or whatever you want to call her. Tough, hot, action, powerful, caring, loving, and so much more. How could I pick anyone else?
My Favorite Part: The beginning. You can feel the power radiating through the two people. The description gives you great insight to how tired and yet how stubborn each is. Of course when death is the other options it’s good to be stubborn. Then you trace back to what brought Kader here and why. It’s a great way to get to know the character in a short period.
Full Concept: Action packed. Full of power. Strength and courage. These are just some of the thoughts that come to mind about this story and those in it. It has everything that a good fantasy book needs, action, romance, love, power, and organized craziness.
Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars. I did enjoy the adventure and thrill and adrenaline rushes I got through the story and it did keep my attention. My only problem was trying to keep up with who was who. These type of people use so many different names it was hard to remember that this person was also this person and this person.

Book Review: Lucky In Love

Book Review by Toni G. Sinns
Book Title: Lucky In Love
Author: Karina Gioertz
About the Author: Karina began writing as a child. Early on it was mostly poetry and short stories, but by the time she was a teenager she was pulled towards writing screenplays. In her twenties she spent some time studying creative writing and continued working on her poetry, some of which was published at the time.
In addition to that, she spent many years studying acting and taking voice lessons, which led to extensive experience in all aspects of Community Theater. Since then, Karina has self-published several books and has also become an avid blogger in addition to continued focus on screenwriting.
Although she has been writing for most of her life, it never quite registered with her as something out of the ordinary or worth pursuing, because it was so closely connected to who she was. Instead, she focused on her singing and acting because the draw to that industry had always been there. In the end Karina realized that she never quite enjoyed 'being in' the story as much as she enjoyed 'telling' the story. Karina is not a writer because it's the only thing she's good at, or it's the only thing she knows how to do... Karina is a writer because it's the only thing she doesn't know how NOT to do.
While writing has become her main focus over the years, she also enjoys many other creative activities such as painting and photography. Most sunny days she can be found in her courtyard working feverishly at painting and refurbishing old furniture...that is, of course, only if it wasn't a suitable day to spend at the beach ;)
Book Description: Most days Lucky doesn’t mind being single. And why would she? Between her three male roommates, there’s always someone around to keep her company. But then as relationships evolve and change, Lucky soon finds herself being left behind.
When Lucky’s birthday rolls around and she finds herself being the only one without a date in a room full of people, she has to face the sad truth that the three men in her life all have women in their lives that aren’t her. Lucky finally asks herself how she wound up there. Has love been avoiding her…or has she been avoiding love?

My ReviewStory Line: 1 girl and 3 men in a house nothing can be wrong with those odds can they? It really isn’t as easy as it should be and it isn’t as glorious as you would believe it could be either.  As you watch the story unfold and each person has their own path to follow you become more and more aware of the way their paths crossed but now are all in the same direction.
Characters: Tara, D, Lucky, Gabe, Noah, Jason
My Favorite Character: Noah. I’ve got to admit I have a soft spot for bad boy types. And as you read and learn more about his hidden secretes and his personality I can’t help falling more in love with this guy.
My Favorite Part: Is the bar scene when everything finally comes to light between the three guys. I can’t tell you TO much about the scene cause I don’t want to spoil the book for you. But it really shows how you can keep things hidden from your friends and how your friends are right there to back you up and put you on the right path.
Full Concept: As this group of friends becomes more and more tangled in their life dramas and different paths you can’t help but feel like one of them. Standing in Grandma Pearls house watching the flirty fights and playful arguments. You learn their secrets and find out about their fears.
Overall Rating: 5 of 5 Stars. I love this author’s work. I am always able to connect with the characters. Always able to get myself lost in the story and feel as though I stand side by side with her characters. I recommend this book for all of those looking for an enjoyable read.
