Book Haul (7/22/2015)

Paperbacks were 49 cents apiece, and the hardcovers were a buck each. The Herman Koch novel came in the mail for review.

Damn good day. :)

Reading progress update: I’ve read 576 out of 576 pages.

Quiet Game - Greg Iles

Hands down, the best thriller I’ve read. Period. I will attempt to review this in the morning.

I’m gonna have a serious book hangover tomorrow. I feel bad for whatever I pick up next.

To My Amazing Friends, Fans, and Followers

Today’s been a good day. Got a couple of new reviews. Won a contest. Life is good. Thank you for all your past, present, and future support. Books, stories, or blog posts, whatever your preference – as long as you keep reading them, I’ll keep writing them.

Now I’m off to celebrate my wife’s birthday. Take care of each other.

From my house to yours,

*hugs and high fives*

How I Rate Stuffs

Onto the bandwagon I do jump!

DNF – Usually decline to rate because the act of rating requires more energy than the author put into the book.

1 Star – Author spelled “the” and “and” properly but not much else.

2 Stars – Proof that some editors will work on anything.

3 Stars – The author had a vision but needs glasses.

4 Stars – I’d probably enjoy the movie adaptation.

5 Stars – Fanboying. Don’t mind me.

Ruminating On: Paid Reviews

Dear Authors,

Fiverr reviewers are the street hookers of the reviewing world. Kirkus would be the high-priced escorts. They’re both gonna charge you. One’s cheaper. One is of a higher quality. One is more socially acceptable. Both will lie for you about the quality of your output.

Either way, you’re still paying someone to pay attention to you.

There are plenty of reviewing platforms that do not charge money. Both in the big leagues and the minors. You don’t have to settle, but you must do your research and have patience. When readers read reviews, they look through a mixture of both positive and negative reviews. All positives is just as bad for you as all negatives. Purchasing 100 five-star reviews is likely hurting more than it is helping. I know some readers (myself included) who only read negative reviews because we know five-star reviews usually cannot be trusted. I’m even too liberal with my fives, especially on something I’m fanboying over.

My point is this: You can legally pay for reviews just like you can take a trip to Amsterdam and legally pay for sex. You can buy at a street hooker level, or splurge for a classy call girl, but you’re still paying for affection that you will likely be the only one to enjoy. Why not meet a nice person, settle down, and enjoy a lifetime of experiences? This is the comfort and security real readers and reviewers provide.

As long as authors keep buying reviews, these liars will keep selling them. And as long as they’re getting paid, they’ll keep flooding the market with bullshit reviews we cannot trust. Sooner or later, the review system will shatter under the weight of false reviews and will become as meaningless as Donald Trump’s run for president. No one will take them seriously, at any level.

Those are my thoughts on the matter. As always, conversation is welcome in the comment section. Rage is not.

*hugs and high fives*

Attention: Horror Authors

Are you a horror author? Do you read non-horror books? Do you want a $20 Amazon gift card? How would you like to contribute to a series of blog posts about horror authors’ favorite non-horror books? You can pick one book or several, short story collections to epically-long tomes.

The catches are:

1. You must be a published horror author. I must be able to find your books for sale somewhere. Yes, even Smashwords counts.

2. The book you pick cannot have been categorized on bookseller sites as horror. Example: Stephen King’s Hearts in Atlantis is not horror, but it is considered horror by booksellers because, unfortunately, King is considered a horror author in many circles.

3. The novel cannot be horror disguised as literary fiction. No American Psycho posts, please.

4. Everything else is open season: Fantasy, Sci Fi, Romance, Action, Comedy, Drama, blah blah blah… But, I say again, they cannot be crossovers. No Aliens or Throne of Bones.

What I need from you:

Three to five well-edited paragraphs on why the book(s) you chose is your favorite non-horror read. Why is it that you, the writer of grisly distractions, are entertained by this tamer-by-comparison material? Why do you recommend others read it/them? And why you feel that it is important for authors and readers alike to read outside their favorite genres.

I will also need the following: A picture and links to wherever your own works are sold. These should be emailed along with your article. I’ll handle the links to the book(s) you discuss.

Every month, I will be picking one author’s piece to showcase. You will receive your gift card a week before your post goes live. I am not asking for exclusivity, but I do ask for new writing and for the piece not to be shared anywhere else until I have posted it first. If you prefer Audible credit over an Amazon gift card, that can be arranged as well. Gift cards to other booksellers are available too. If your work is rejected, you will receive a simple rejection slip.

Email all submissions to edwardlorn@gmail.com. Thanks for playing.

*hugs and high fives*
