#BookReview: His Defiant Princess by Nana Prah | #HisDefiantPrincess #RHOSaene @NanaPrah
His Defiant Princess is Book 1 of the Royal House of Saene series from Love Africa Press. Before I continue, I should mention (especially those who are new to me of my blog that I wrote book 2 of the series. Aside from communication to ensure consistency in common aspects of the series, we had very little input in each other's stories, so I was very excited to get my hands on the final product, which I am reviewing today.
Here's the blurb:
Princess Amira Saene has always done the right thing when it came to her beloved Kingdom of Bagumi. Yet her unorthodox online relationship with a man across the sea has derailed her from cultural norms. She doesn’t care. After a year of communicating, the man she’s developed feelings for comes to visit. Their chemistry is intense and she tumbles the rest of the way into love. With the threat of war looming over her country, Amira is thrown in the middle as a peacemaker through an arranged marriage.
Jake Pettersen never thought he’d meet the woman of his dreams, much less online. Flying thousands of miles to West Africa to meet her verifies that the feelings he’s developed are real. Too bad her family doesn’t think he’s worthy of her. When he learns that Amira has been betrothed, he must decide whether fight for her or accept the loss for the sake of her homeland. Is their happiness worth the devastation of her country?
MY REVIEWDr Jake Petterson travels to Bagumi, West Africa, to meet Amira, a woman he's been chatting with for a year. He believes himself to be in love with her, but when he arrives, he discovers that Amira has been keeping a huge secret from him. She is a princess! Not only that, some members of her family are not happy with her choice of a commoner - especially a foreign one.
Although Jake is white and Amira is black, the most significant aspect of this racial difference is perhaps to highlight just how much of a fish out of water the hero is and how he makes up for it with his personality and his fierce sense of loyalty, which easily wins over Amira's tough big brothers (and me). This relationship is not about race at all, which is exactly how I like my interracial romance!
I thoroughly enjoyed the picture Ms Prah painted of Bagumi and its citizens. I've read a number of her books, and strong female characters is one of her strong suits. She definitely delivers on that with her depiction of the women of Bagumi (and not just the royals) who are strong-willing and as dominant as their men.
Even though Bagumi is a fictional country, I liked the cultural aspects woven into the story and made me connect even more with the setting and the people. I had a few laughs at the expense of the villain whom I found more funny than annoying.
His Defiant Princess did a great job of introducing readers to the series, the Saene family and the kingdom of Bagumi. This is a story that should whet readers' appetite for more of what Bagumi has to offer. Ayekoo!

#BookReview: The Senator's Daugther by Amaka Azie @AmakaAzie
BLURB
Rita the only daughter of billionaire, Senator Obaseki, hides behind her reputation as a spoilt wealthy heiress with no ambition to cover up a painful past.
Former soldier Nosa Edosa, believes the Senator to be the epitome of greed and political corruption. Failing to bring him to justice through legal means, his last-ditch effort involves kidnapping the man's daughter.
The plan is simple, the execution flawless ... until love gets involved.
Neither Rita nor Nosa are what they seem, and as they discover themselves in this quest to right her family's wrongs, they suddenly have something too precious to lose-their hearts.
Experience the thrills of Nigerian politics, sizzling romance, and perilous suspense in this action-packed love story by Amaka Azie
MY REVIEWLet me start by saying I really enjoyed this story! A perfect kidnap plan goes all wrong when the victim turns out to be the kidnappers perfect mate. The characters were likable, empathetic and well-rounded.
The Senator's Daughter takes very real issues in Nigerian/West African society and politics and weaves them neatly into this tale of love, loyalty, suspense and intrigue. The romance between Nosa and Rita starts slowly and builds up to a satisfying and sensual peak.
I was pleasantly surprised by the villain's motive and rooted for him to get redemption. There were a couple of other surprises that you'll enjoy. As an African, I found the characters and setting wonderfully authentic.
Highly recommended

He never dated any woman twice | Expecting Ty's Baby @empibaryeh #Excerpt #Teaser #AAromance
Hello there and thanks for visiting. I'm sharing another excerpt from Chapter one of
Expecting Ty's Baby
. This follows from last week's post. If you missed you my last two excerpts, you might want to read then before embarking on part 3.
Chapter 1: Part 1Chapter 1: Part 2Chapter 1: Part 3
EXPECTING TY'S BABY © by Empi Baryeh 2019(Chapter 1: Part 4)He’d been just in time to see Patricia walk into the main reception, an African goddess, her skin a flawless cocoa brown much darker than his caramel complexion. High heels added a couple of inches to her five-seven frame. She’d been wearing skinny jeans and a fashionable blouse made from African print fabric. Slung over one shoulder was a handbag, and in her other hand she held, of all things, a silver toolbox. His curiosity aroused, he’d lingered at the entryway. She’d flashed an even set of pearly whites at the receptionist and asked for Naaki, whom he’d had the pleasure of teasing his best friend about a few times before. Moments later, when the two friends hugged, Ty had still been watching, unable to will his legs to move him past the spot where he stood. He’d also guessed Naaki would take her visitor to her work area in the general office, which meant they’d have to walk past him. Although, he’d only known her a couple days, he’d sensed Naaki to be too polite to pass by him without introducing her friend, so he’d casually slipped a hand into his pocket and waited. The sound of a horn blaring yanked him out of his thoughts and he swore, realizing he’d drifted off again. Whipping out his cell phone, he made a mental note to get a local line, since the wedding was six weeks away, and using his US phone for a month and a half would be expensive and even impossible at times. He dialed Thane’s number.“Hey, buddy,” Ty said when the call went through. “You don’t happen to be with your bride-to-be, do you?”Thane’s chuckle drifted across the line. “You tried to find her on your own, didn’t you?”Ty grimaced, and gave Thane a moment to have a laugh at his expense.“What did I tell you?” Thane asked.Don’t go on any bold expeditions. Ty hadn’t forgotten. He’d just been so sure he’d make it to his destination without trouble, so he hadn’t called to ask Patricia to meet him at the hotel as his friend had advised. He’d wanted to surprise her.Still, he refused to admit his error—unless he really had to. “Before you think of making me beg, bro, just remember I’m your best man and I could—”“Wow, even with your hands tied behind your back, you’re threatening me.” Thane laughed. “But you win. Naaki won’t forgive me if I let you do anything to ruin our wedding.”Before Ty could think of an appropriate response, another voice drifted across the line in the background—a female. Naaki. He breathed out in relief when he heard a rustling sound suggesting the phone had changed hands.“Hello, Ty.” He could hear the smile in Naaki’s voice. “What’s this I hear about you ruining the wedding?”“Just trying to get you on the phone, Naaki,” he said with a smile of his own, hoping he sounded apologetic enough. After a few more pleasantries, he explained his situation to Naaki, and as he listened to her instructions, it became clear where he’d gone wrong. He thanked her and spoke with Thane briefly again before clicking off.Armed with the new directions, he found himself on the right street within seven minutes. The house, a one-story structure, looked like many of the buildings in the vicinity, the top part being residential with the bottom floor reserved for commercial purposes. In Patricia’s case the space below the one-bedroom apartment had been empty, the shop which had previously been there having gone out of business a few months back.It had been locked up at the time of his last visit, with old newspapers covering its glass front. Today, though the paper remained, some parts no longer sticking to the glass, the door lay open. New owner, he guessed, immediately dismissing it from his mind. He had better things to think about. He’d almost bypassed the entrance on his way to the side gate that would grant him access to the staircase leading upstairs when a movement in his peripheral vision made him turn. He stopped short at the sight meeting his gaze. Patricia? His pulse kicked up a notch, and he had to hold in a breath for a few seconds to steady his heart. Ridiculous, he told himself, hesitating for a moment. He didn’t do this. He didn’t go back, never dated any woman twice. His policy had always been to keep his relationships short, sweet, and noncommittal. Once it was over, it was over. Like the first time with Patricia—the rules had been simple and his return to the US put a distance between them, ensuring the permanency of their goodbye. He continued to watch her tap away at her computer, oblivious to his presence. She sat with her back to him, her long braids held up in a way that displayed her graceful neck. He could hear music, an eighties hit he suspected was streaming from the laptop which claimed her full attention. He didn’t do this, but here he stood, and truth be told, he wouldn’t mind spending another week with her.Or maybe six. Finally, he crossed the threshold.“Hello, Trish.”
So that's the end of Chapter 1. I hope you enjoyed the read. Leave me a comment.

“There’s no shame in admitting it. I’ve been thinking about you, as well,” he said. “I’ve concluded that I must kiss you again.”
He palmed her abdomen, causing sensual havoc with his gentle caresses. Her breath came in short, shallow bursts while the distance between them began to shrink.
“No.” It sounded like a plea, and yet, she found herself adding, “Please.”
“What are you afraid of?”
“This isn’t about fear. How can you suspect me of treason and yet want to kiss me?”
He pulled back. “I don’t see what one has to do with the other.”

Will she fall into his arms or keep it strictly professional?
MY REVIEW
Destiny Awakened is Book four in the Destiny series by Nana Prah. I love the series because of the setting and the strong women. This one treats a very important issue about women's sexuality - FGM. A victim of FGM, the heroine, Gloria, has led a life of repression. Confident and outspoken in most other aspects of her life, she yearns for a happy relationship with a man - possibly marriage.
The storytelling was great and I loved that the heroine wasn't some poor African girl being rescued by the hero. The characters were well-rounded and the dialogue flowed. It was nice to see characters from the previous books feature in this one. Nana Prah is good at creating sweet moments that make a reader's heart flutter, and this story had a few of those.
There were a couple of things that didn't quite work for me. The hero had an aversion to Ghanaian women in general, and I found it hard to buy into his justification for blacklisting this particular group of women. Also, while I empathised with the heroine and the trauma she endured as a child, I couldn't connect with her (or the hero for that matter).
Overall, this is a good read and a strong addition to the series. Recommended for those who like sweet romance and strong heroines.

“We explained everything to your management and team rep. They said it was fine that you will be meeting with my partner instead of me. I can’t be objective after what happened yesterday, and this is an important year for you. You need the best person for the job and I’m definitely not it.” I continued to walk toward the elevator.
“I don’t want to hear that bull!” He stopped and grabbed my arm. “You should have told me you didn’t want to see me again.”
“It’s not like that. I just felt you needed someone more qualified than me to help you get through this year. I’m used to rookies, and you are far from a rookie.”
“But what about what I feel I need? I’m not a rookie, so I know what I need, and it’s you.” He looked down at me, speaking with desperation in his voice. “I need you. I don’t want anyone else.”
I almost relented, but even then, the guilt of wanting him to kiss me ate at me. “It’s too late. We already spoke with your team.” I tried to walk away again.
He moved his rigid body in my path. “The hell it is. Whatever you need me to do to make this work, I’ll do it.” We were making a scene and drawing a small crowd. He seemed oblivious that people were looking and possibly even recording us.
I impulsively grabbed his hand, unlocked the office, and pulled him past the reception area to my office. I opened my door and walked inside. Before I could say a word, he closed the door and roughly pushed me against it, kissing me desperately.
At first, I was in shock and didn’t move as his mouth stroked over mine. Then he softly used his tongue, which sent a feverish heat through my veins. I responded, and his hands began exploring my body as he pressed against me.
When his hardness wedged against my stomach, I pushed him lightly and surprisingly, he didn’t resist and stopped kissing me. “I’m sorry.” He rested his forehead against mine.
I looked at him and whispered, “This is why I can’t be your therapist. I can’t resist you.”
“I would rather you work with me than lose you, so I won’t kiss you again. You are so beautiful. When you grabbed my hand and brought me in here...” He shook his head. “That was some sexy shit and I couldn’t stop myself.”
I watched him, not sure what to say.
He stared at my lips, only inches from his. “Like I said, I won’t kiss you again, if you don’t want me to.”
God knows, I really wanted him to do so much more. And when I bit my lip, with no response, he groaned and pushed my legs apart with his knee. He picked me up, wrapped my legs around his waist, and set me on my desk. He kissed me again, and this time I didn’t fight my attraction. His strong arms closed around me and I melted. Between kisses, he asked, “Can you feel how much I want you?”
“Yes.”

ABOUT TIYE LOVETIYE LOVE recalled reading romance ever since she was a young child and would sneak and read the Western love stories her grandmother kept on her bedside table. Although she didn’t understand half of the words she read at the time, something about those books captured her attention. As she grew older, her love of romance expanded to other genres, and she became a fan of anything remotely related to reading and books, such as libraries, bookstores, and the coffeeshop around the corner. She loves to travel and has lived in several cities, including New Orleans, Washington D.C., and Houston, and finds inspiration for her stories from every place she has had the fortune to visit or inhabit. When Tiye is not obsessed with her latest characters, she spends time with herself, family, and friends doing whatever she can to create her best life possible.

This time, I'm sharing a snippet from His Inherited Princess, (Royal House of Saene Book 2).

She couldn’t allow him to kiss her as if any of what he’d said was okay with her. She’d committed herself to his brother, not to him. She willed herself to speak, or turn away, but his musky scent surrounded her, engulfed her senses, and her voice caught in her throat.
She held her breath as his lips touched her temple. A flame ignited from the spot, expanding over her as hot threads of pleasure and confusion, and for a moment, she forgot the pain in her body.
