PLEASE read this

Please read/share this: A close friend of mine is facing a diagnosis of terminal cancer. I am crushed by the sad news, but inspired by his good humor and fortitude in the face of the unthinkable. I have sent my prayers and support, but that is not close to enough.

John Stephen Walsh has been my online friend for a decade. We never met in person, but we know each other better than most "real-world" friends do. We met through political debate groups on Yahoo (long before Facebook was invented) but we both dropped out of those years ago. Then, coincidentally, he contacted me out of the blue when I was starting to write Voyage of the Dead in 2011. Turns out he has been writing horror and science fiction stories for many years. He really helped motivate me to write my first book. He was always there for feedback and encouragement. It's a debt I can't repay, not that he would ever ask me to.

After releasing Voyage of the Dead and Flotilla of the Dead, I turned the tables and convinced him to compile some of his stories into an indie anthology. The result was "Love Has A Taste" (Kindle 2012). I know it is hard for anthologies to compete in a market dominated by novels, but these are some damned good stories!

So I am asking you to BUY HIS BOOK! The royalties may come in time to help him. Regardless, his legacy as an author is worthy of celebration. I can assure you that this collection of horrific stories deserves a place on your Kindle, or at least in your cloud. Some dark and stormy night you will find yourself drawn to one of these terrific tales. And if the author frightens you, just tell him I sent you.
With Love.

Buddy Read

After meeting a challenge quota on the "New and Active Members" thread in the "Zombies" group, there will be a Buddy Read for "Voyage of the Dead" at http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1... starting August 16. It will be a quick weekend read and I am happy about that. The book is meant to be a fast paced read.

If you haven't downloaded and read the edited/revised edition, this a good excuse to do so.

More news coming soon, including details on ApocaCon2 (October 26-27 in Long Beach, CA). Also watch for release of "Interludes in Hell" and other books in the Sovereign Spirit Saga universe.

Motivational Message

I just have to share part of an email I received today from a fan asking me to hurry up and release more books in the Sovereign Spirit Saga. This type of feedback is both motivating and intimidating! I never thought my zombie books would engender this kind of response:

"...It's just that your 1st 3 books in the Sovereign Spirit saga were so absolutely AWESOME that having to wait has been horrendous! And I'm 50 years old! LOL I can honestly say that your books resounded in me in a way that no other books have been able to do so in many years..."

Wow! That made my day. Needless to say, I am working on the next book in the series!

Testimonial for my Editor

Following is a testimonial that I wrote for my editor. If you are looking for a good one, you can't go wrong with Felicia A. Sullivan.
http://indie-editor.webs.com/

Felicia recently edited all three of my books within a tight time-frame and did a phenomenal job. I discovered Felicia over a year ago when she gave my first book a scathing review on Goodreads. She hated my main character -- thought he was arrogant and full of himself. Then she went on to say, "The rest of the book is outstanding. Great story, plot, arc, characters, situation..." and gave it 4 stars! From that moment on I knew that I wanted her to edit my books. However, as a newbie indie, I proceeded to release all three on Kindle without the benefit of an editor. The rough editions were well received, yet I vowed to get an editor before releasing them in Paperback or on other platforms. I am so glad that Felicia agreed to do it.

Since my books had already been released, Felicia wisely avoided direct intervention in the story line. Instead, she made subtle changes that humanized the characters, especially the one she had hated so much. Her edits preserved the voice and style of the author (me), while refining the tone in a way that greatly improved the final product. I was impressed when she explained that she wanted to make it a book by an author writing about zombies, instead of a book by a zombie writer. It was a brilliant approach and I am more than happy with the results.

I highly recommend Felicia A Sullivan as a consummate and professional editor. Her fees were quite reasonable. The process was simple, straightforward and relatively painless. None of the manuscripts required more than two exchanges of edits and I accepted about 99% of her suggested changes -- of which there were literally THOUSANDS in the 300,000+ words that she edited for me. I intend to ask her to edit my future releases too. Any author would be lucky to have her as an editor and they are welcome to contact me with any further questions.

Hugh goes HUGE!

My friend, Hugh Howey, is leaving the rest of us indie authors in his Dust! (title of his next trilogy btw). LOL. But seriously, Hugh just returned from a European book tour and... Following the 20th Century Fox/Ridley Scott movie deal, and overseas Random House contract, he finally agreed to paper and hard back books through Simon & Shuster... BUT (and this is the BIG one folks), he refused to give them the DIGITAL rights! That's right, he held out until they begged for the print rights and agreed to leave him the indie rights to his eBooks.

Un-F-ing-Real!!!! Kudos to Hugh. He actually advised me to turn down my last two offers from publishers and I thank him for that and for trailblazing a new course for indie authors! So... He is featured in the Wall Street Journal today. Three cheers for the hero and inspiration of indie authors! Watch this report:

Zombiepalooza Radio Interview!

So...I finally agreed to an invitation to be interviewed live about my books. It will be this Friday night (Feb. 8) at 9:00 pm Pacific time (Midnight Eastern) on the Zombiepalooza show on www.ztalkradio.com for one hour. Oh... What will I say? Who will even be awake? I'm told that this is the "prime time" hour for zombie fans... We'll see.

It would be great if some of you tune in. There is a chat room and radio call in feature. I can only hope that someone who likes my books will chime in at some point....

Even if I bomb on Friday night I can't say enough about how much I appreciate those who seem to like my books. Sales of Deluge of the Dead have exceeded expectations and helped to boost sales of the first two books in the saga too. I don't know how to thank you, except to say thank you.
