The Comfort of Animals

A week ago this Wednesday, I was talking with a writing pal over coffee at my favorite café. Well, Sharon had the coffee, I had a bagel. But I digress. We touched on many topics, but one that sticks out to me most was about animals and how good they are for us humans.

Some people, who are not animal people, don’t understand what a difference a pet can make to their human. Pets can…

Lower our blood pressure Bring us happiness Protect us from intruders and from disease-bearing vermin Give us p...

Reading and Rereading

There is no shortage of books to read. If you read one book for every day of your life, you would come nowhere close to having read all the books there are. But it’s fun to try! That’s not to say you’re going to enjoy them all, obvs. Everyone has their own preferences when it comes to genre, style, length, age category, and so forth and so on. As my brother-in-law says,

“Life is too short to read a book you don’t enjoy.”

I’ve rarely been known to DNF (did not finish) a book. But I still have...

Mary Berry’s Cherry Cake – An Adventure

Hi, guys and dolls!

I’m mixing things up a bit on the blog. Instead of just talking about writing, I’m going to be sharing tidbit, anecdotes, and the like of things I find interesting. This week’s interest should come as no surprise: BAKING!

For Easter this year, I made one of Mary Berry’s famous recipes: a big ol’ cherry cake, complete with lemon icing and toasted almond slivers.

If you don’t know who Mary Berry is, well, you must not have seen the early seasons of The Great British Baking S...

Cooking Show: Episode 2

This time on From Book to Cook, I’m making a traditional Irish apple cake. Will it turn out all right? Or will I butcher yet another recipe held dear by so many?

From Book to Cook – Episode 1

Earlier this week, I filmed the first episode of my new cooking show, From Book to Cook (title credit goes to Mimi, fellow author and a historical food enthusiast.) I made a spiced honey cake from the Unofficial Poldark Cookbook by Tricia Cohen and Larry Edwards. Have a look, but forgive the shaky camera and the poor editing. I have zero equipment and skills to work with.

Plotters vs. Pantsers and Real Life

There’s a funny story about a man visiting Iceland and relying only on his GPS to get him places. It’s a long, twisty tale with much hilarity and confusion. Suffice it to say, the guy becomes famous for not following landmarks or maps but his gadget. This not only leads him to the wrong part of the country–it leads him to the wrong part of the country TWICE. It’s not something he probably wanted to become famous for, but there you go.

There’s a saying by Edison, I believe, and it goes somethi...

Publishing Announcement

I have news–and I know how you like news (cue the laughter from fans of the movie adaptation of Emma with Gwyneth Paltrow.) No, this is not another Jane Austen parody announcement (though there might be one down the road…who knows?)

My fantasy novel The Goblets Immortal has been accepted for publication by Flame Tree Press!

The contract has been signed, an author questionnaire has been filled out (mostly; I need to do some more research), and it may seem like I am...
