Patricia Simpson grew up in the wilderness of Western Montana, where it meant a 3-1/2 hour drive just to buy shoes. When she was young, the iPod hadn't yet been invented, and there were no radio stations in the area, so on the many long drives for shoes, Patricia amused herself by reading novels or creating her own stories in her head. She was encouraged to write by her sister, who always asked to be read what she had written so far that day, her Egyptian-born English teacher in junior high, and then again by a creative writing professor at the University of Washington. Or I tell myself to just sit down and try writing for just five minutes. That's all. Just sit down and get back to the story. That's usually all it takes.

If I am writing a scene and it seems like a struggle (I keep stopping to get coffee, check email, pet the dog), it always means one thing. There isn't enough conflict in the scene to make it interesting—even to the me, the author! Danger, Will Robinson...(less)

When I travel, I see it as an opportunity for a new setting. When I go to a museum, I take note of odd weapons or historical facts that would make an intriguing story. When I meet someone new, I use their quirks or life experience for a character. And I am never alone. There's always a pesky character chatting in my head!(less)

Death in Amsterdam Based on a True Story by Patricia Simpson Death in Amsterdam: Based on a True Story

Hello Everyone--

My new book, Death in Amsterdam, is now available on Kindle. Before you go ordering it, please note this book is not a paranormal romance. It's not a romance at all, in fact. It's narrative nonfiction, which is a fancy way of saying that most of the book is based on facts, but some of the passages are a product of my imagination.
