The Stop Trump Reading List
I think that this has been one of the most eye opening elections in history. So many of my counterparts didn't really understand how voting really works until this year. With so many feeling cheated and confused as to how we got to this place in America, people are wondering how they can survive what I'm sure will be called The Trump era.
As a reader and writer I will always champion reading books to educate yourself and strengthen your mind, body, and soul. If you are wondering how you can be the change you want to see read some, or all, of the books in this list as a way to get started.

Hundreds Of Children's Book Authors Vow To End Racism
Author Jacqueline Woodson. One of many dedicated to ending bigotry through the power of her art. This week, hundreds of children’s book authors and illustrators signed a pledge to use their art to fight bigotry and to make young readers feel safe and accepted.
The site The Brown Bookshelf, founded to raise awareness of African-American children’s book writers, posted the statement on Monday morning. The pledge specifically cites the recent presidential election as “a clear indication of the bigotry that is entrenched in this nation.”
It received over 400 signatures by the end of the day, including those of the site’s founding authors: Kelly Starling Lyons,Tameka Fryer Brown, Olugbemisola Rhuday-Perkovich, Don Tate, Gwendolyn Hooks, Tracey Baptiste, Crystal Allen, Paula Chase-Hyman, Varian Johnson and Jerry Craft. A note posted under the pledge stated that though signatures were closed on Monday night, they’d been reopened through Wednesday at 5 p.m. “because of the many, moving requests we’ve received.”
As of this writing, signatories include National Book Award–winning author Jacqueline Woodson, who was awarded the prize for her young adult work Brown Girl Dreaming in 2014. Woodson is a finalist again this year for her adult novel, Another Brooklyn , which also deals with questions of privilege, prejudice and exclusion.
Prominent young people’s authors such as Daniel José Older, Jane Yolen and Laurie Halse-Anderson have also signed the pledge.
The pledge reads, in part:
Children’s literature may be the most influential literary genre of all. [...]Read the full pledge at The Brown Bookshelf.
Therefore we, the undersigned children’s book authors and illustrators, do publicly affirm our commitment to using our talents and varied forms of artistic expression to help eliminate the fear that takes root in the human heart amid lack of familiarity and understanding of others; the type of fear that feeds stereotypes, bitterness, racism and hatred; the type of fear that so often leads to tragic violence and senseless death.

Toni Morrison Keeps It Real About White Superiority
One thing I love about Toni Morrison is that she does not mince words. She's a proud Black woman and she isn't afraid to show it!
We were all shocked when Donald Trump won this year's presidential election. We're all pondering what's next for America. Some of us are worried. Some of us are angry but we can't let this set back for our country keep us down.
Toni was one of sixteen writers asked to do an op ed for The New Yorker to answer the question "What do we do now that Trump is our president?" Check it out.
Mourning for WhitenessBy Toni MorrisonThis is a serious project. All immigrants to the United States know (and knew) that if they want to become real, authentic Americans they must reduce their fealty to their native country and regard it as secondary, subordinate, in order to emphasize their whiteness. Unlike any nation in Europe, the United States holds whiteness as the unifying force. Here, for many people, the definition of “Americanness” is color.Under slave laws, the necessity for color rankings was obvious, but in America today, post-civil-rights legislation, white people’s conviction of their natural superiority is being lost. Rapidly lost. There are “people of color” everywhere, threatening to erase this long-understood definition of America. And what then? Another black President? A predominantly black Senate? Three black Supreme Court Justices? The threat is frightening. CONTINUE...

What Does Charlamagne Know About Optimism?
I was first introduced to Charlamagne Tha God when he was Wendy Williams' side kick on her radio show. This was before Wendy was mainstream with her own TV show. If you know anything about this guy then you know that he is always talking trash about celebrities. He's the interviewer that will ask you some bullsh!t to get a rise out of you or a negative reaction out of you. I understand doing stuff for ratings but he is just plain old disrespectful to the guests on his current morning radio show The Breakfast Club.
When I learned that Charlamagne would be releasing a book in 2017 the last thing I expected it to be about was optimism and inspiration. I'll be damned. This guy wants to actually put out something positive for the people. Here's what Hot New Hip Hop had to say about his upcoming release:
According to the AP, The book, entitled "Black Privilege: Opportunity Comes to Those Who Create It," is said to contain “brutally honest insights" as C Tha God recounts his journey from the dusty roads of Moncks Corner, South Carolina to radio and social media prominence. It is slated for an April 18, 2017 release via Simon & Schuster.
“I wrote this for the dreamers, for the optimists; this book isn’t for pessimists,” Charlamagne told HipHopDX. “This book is about embracing who and what you are regardless of race, gender, sexuality, and class. God gave you the privilege of this thing called life so regardless of what this society tells you that you can’t do and what you don’t have to understand you lack nothing God gave you everything you need to succeed.”
