Kickstarter: Dust McAlan and the Curse of the Iron Skull

Whew! I’ve been building up and leading to this, and it feels like the right time to make this official. I just posted this on my Facebook page if you want to head over there, but otherwise, read on:

On July 19th, I will be launching the Kickstarter for the hardcover printing of Dust McAlan and the Curse of the Iron Skull. After some careful consideration and deliberation, I’m looking at the fairly modest goal of $10,000. What does that cover? Printing and shipping costs, illustrator payments (pay the artists, everyone!), and purchasing a unique ISBN. The cost gets five hundred copies of the hardcover, emphasizing the “special edition” features of this version of the novel, and depending on stretch goals I’m hoping to print more.

But what about rewards? Well, I’ve come up with a few that I think are something not just special, but relevant to what we’re looking to accomplish. Every backer gets a mention and a thank you in the back of the novel (hardcover and digital versions, also in future paperback printings), as well as a digital copy of the first Dust novel, Empire of the Serpent. From there we’ve got digital art booklets that span both novels as well as production sketches; t-shirts; individual portraits drawn in either black and white or color, depending on the backer tier; editing services; and more as well. And while the hardcover will feature a bonus short story of Dust that won’t be appearing anywhere else, I’m toying with the idea of publishing a digital book featuring the original version of Dust’s adventures that will only be released as a part of the Kickstarter.

There’s a lot to do, a lot to work on, and I’m excited to be able to bring to life this world that I’ve been working on for over a decade. Dust McAlan is returning with his biggest adventure yet, and I can’t wait for you all to see it.

“Particularly prone to serious procrastination problems are children who grew up with unusually high expectations placed on them…or else they exhibited exceptional talents early on, and thereafter “average” performances were met with concern and suspicion from parents and teachers.”

Holy SHIT

WELL THEN

Yep.

They actually tested me for a learning disability in high school because I was consistently failing math.

They discovered that I actually scored in the 80th percentile in that sort of learning.

Problem was, in every other subject, I was in the 99.8th percentile.

I had never learned how to study because I never needed to—and then, when something proved to be even the slightest bit challenging, my brain went

“LOL nope this is impossible abort”

Meanwhile, this entire time I’m scraping by in subjects like English. The assignments I did turn in, I’d score top marks—but I’d avoid turning in projects I didn’t think were “good” enough.

Essentially, my brain had two settings: “100%” or “0%”.

This sort of Baby Genius shit makes kids and adolescents neurotic and self-destructive.

archaicwonder:

Neo-Assyrian Glazed Terracotta Tile from Nimrud (Kalhu), Iraq, c. 883-859 BC

A clue to the colour scheme of an ancient palace:

This glazed tile was found by the excavator Henry Layard at the Assyrian city of Nimrud. Along with the stone reliefs, it was part of the decorative scheme of the royal palace, although few examples survived Nimrud’s destruction in the seventh century BC.

This example depicts an Assyrian king, possibly Ashurnasirpal II (reigned 883-859 BC), accompanied by his bodyguard and attendants. It was probably part of a sequence showing the king as triumphant warrior and hunter. Such tiles provide a clue to the kind of colour scheme used for the relief panels. The decoration was executed in yellow, black and green (perhaps originally red) paint. These were made from natural materials.

It is likely that most major Assyrian buildings had paintwork at least in the reception rooms. Ashurnasirpal recorded that he had represented his triumphs in paintings. There were murals on the walls above the carved stone panels and the ceilings were also painted.

Glazed bricks are mentioned first in the second half of the second millennium BC when the mastery of the mechanical properties of glass had become known.

The California Kings are back on the Heists! This time we’re doing the Valkyrie setup from the Humane Labs heist sequences. Can we work together just enough to succeed, or are we going to end up more like the Reservoir Bitches?
