An unedited Excerpt from A Secret Fate For the umpteenth time, over the past two weeks, Addie recited the words over and over again in her head, begging, pleading, Cael, please remember me. Please remember you love me. Dragging her useless, helpless, and now rail-thin of a frame from the bed—their bed, his bed—she stumbled into the bathroom, hardly recognizing the person in the mirror. The sunken, dark eyes, her indented cheekbones, only made her brown eyes look larger and more recessed, giving her face a hollow look. Well, that was fine, now her face matched her hollow and empty soul.She couldn’t work, couldn’t sleep, couldn’t eat. Gerry threatened to give her job to Darcy permanently if she didn’t snap out of it and get her rear end into the bar soon. She didn’t care. Why should she? Let Darcy have the damn job. She didn’t need it. She had her trust fund, didn’t she? She couldn’t face going in there, seeing all those people, everyone asking how she was getting along … without Cael—the unspoken part of the sentence. Well, how the hell did they think she was? She just lost the man she loved. Lost her dad the year before. Who would be next? Who would she lose next? Maia? The Twins who weren’t even born yet? Unthinkable. But, as the old saying went, bad things happened in threes. Maybe if she stayed home, away from other people, nobody else would die or disappear. Her family, friends, they’d all taken turns checking in on her, Darcy one day, Maia another. Gerry, Cael’s uncle Bart even stopped by. Someone, once a day would come knocking on her door, trying to coax her out of the house. “Not ready,” she’d say. “I need time.” How much time would it take? How much time does a person normally require before they learn to cope with the loss of a loved one? Learn to cope? She didn’t want to learn to cope. Addie hadn’t had much time with Cael to begin with. She felt cheated. Resentful and cheated that she didn’t get to love and enjoy her soul mate for any longer than only a few short months. According to Maia, Cael and Addie were fated. She and Cael had joked, laughing about it being a secret fate because of Addie’s secluded and sheltered childhood. Well, fate was cruel, wasn’t it?

Mother and daughter go to therapy :)
Two women enter Mother May’s humble abode cum office: Adri Dionysios, an heiress and warrior, and her adoptive daughter, Sera Dionysios, a young woman of mysterious origins (possibly with phoenix and gypsy blood in her).
“Come in, dears,” says Mother May. “Make yourselves comfortable.”
Mother May is the matriarch of the Faerie people, and has been around a very, very, very long time. Nobody knows exactly how long. Picture a “Judi Dench” type, a bit stout but soft-looking, with kind, yet, shrewd eyes. She is also very intuitive, and knows things others don’t. Nothing much escapes her. The perfect therapist, of course.
Sera’s face is twisted in a grimace as she sits in an overstuffed armchair with a tapestry pattern, and Adri rolls her eyes and huffs—a long drawn out, trembling huff—while she claims the second armchair next to Sera.
Mother May looks quizzically at the pair. “What’s wrong? Aren’t you glad you’re here to iron out your differences?”
“I practically had to drag her in here kicking and screaming,” Adri says in exasperation, waving her hand in Sera’s general direction. “I suppose anything is more important for my daughter than getting along with her mother, even painting a picture, or reading one of her huge books on cryptology or, or….”
“Ancient languages, Mom. It’s not like you don’t know.”
“Smart mouth,” Adri mutters. “Anyhow, it’s anything and everything but being with me.”
“Yeah, Mom,” Sera scoffs. “Because you make it so easy. And you’re never overbearing.” Sarcasm drips from her tone like fat from a basted duck.
“I was going to ask you,” Mother May interjects, addressing Adri. “Might you, perhaps, be a tad bit overprotective? Could you give Sera a little more freedom to make her own choices and mistakes? It’s what we all did after all, isn’t it?”
“Mistakes?” Adri says in horror. “Mistakes? I’ll have you know, Sera’s life is in danger…so am I supposed to let her go and do anything she wants without keeping an eye on her? Is loving one’s child such a bad thing these days? Then there’s that good for nothing scoundrel, that Rafe, who keeps sniffing around her—”
“I can handle Rafe, Mom. I’m not five…”
“Handle him,” Adri mocks. “Like you did that night when I found you at the club wrapped around him so tight, I thought you were going to do a ‘When Harry met Sally’ right in the middle of that dance floor! That man looks at you like you’re what’s for dinner. I don’t like it.”
“Who cares what you like or not? I can choose to get it on with whoever I want, thank you, even if that person is a monster who owns my very soul and ruined my life. Even if I hate him. It’s not your business to tell me who to make out with. I’m a grown, frigging woman! Then again…” Sera snickers, a wicked gleam in her eyes. “Rafe’s kinda hot. Reeeeeeeeeeeally hot. It’s a physical thing.” Her voice wavers a bit, showing something different lurks beneath the surface nonchalance, but she goes on. “Women can use men for their bodies just like men do. You should know about that more than I do.” Sera emphasizes the last sentence, an eyebrow raised.
Then, coolly, she looks at their therapist. “Mother May, you may not know but Mom here was a courtesan for years and—”
“See what I have to contend with every day?” Adri interjects, turning wild eyes on Mother May. “No respect whatsoever! Mon Dieu, the girl doesn’t even know what’s good for her, yet she wants to challenge me when I try to protect her. That’s the thanks I get.”
Mother May sighs. “Yes, well, darlings, perhaps we will need more, er…meetings such as this to fix this mess. … But now, how about some tea and homemade cookies?”
“Sure!” mother and daughter say in unison, especially at the words ‘homemade cookies’.
“You see,” Mother May says with a twinkle in her all-knowing eyes. “There’s always common ground to stand on, even in the worst of situations.”

Lauren rolled her eyes. "Fine. Do it."
Nic bent down and brushed his lips against hers. For the first few seconds, she didn't kiss him back, but she didn't push him away, either. Then, on a sigh, she leaned into him and her arms locked around his neck. His tongue darted out to taste her bottom lip. Mmm... cherry--his new favorite flavor. When her mouth opened, he didn't hesitate.
He dove in. And drowned.
He'd meant this to be a quick kiss, only now he just couldn't stop. His lips traced a path to her throat. Cupping her bottom with his hands, he lifted her up, grinding against her. She moaned. It was a beautiful sound, one he definitely wanted to hear again.
A loud noise pierced the fog of his lust. He raised his head from where he'd been nuzzling Lauren's apple-scented neck to tell whoever it was to fuck off, but as the sexual haze cleared, he swallowed the words. The paparazzi had gathered around, applauding and calling out crude encouragements. Some snapped photos while others rolled film. Shit. He'd pay for this fuck-up and so would she.

Add in high-stakes scenarios and real-world villains, and you have a story worth writing, and reading.The heroes and heroines of my Deadly Vices series, beginning with Deadly Obsession, are pitted against each other by their radically opposing life experiences. By overcoming their differences and finding common ground, they triumph over their enemies and find true happiness in each other's arms.
Today I live in the Pacific Northwest, thriving on the mix of cultures, languages, religions and ideologies. When I'm not writing, I'm people-watching, imagining entire life stories, and inventing all sorts of danger for the unsuspecting heroes and heroines who cross my path.

The look on his face appeared as determined as it was pleasured. What he had accomplished at the behest of his government was monumental. Never before had anyone created a road map for national conquest. And he had done it not once, but twice.
The high-powered sports roadster streaked up the Pacific Coast Highway north of Malibu—some of Southern California’s most beautiful coastline. The driver had sea waves crashing on his left, a mountain barrier on his right, and a curving two-lane blacktop ahead. Add the thunder of a built V8 engine, and he was zoned-in.
A quick stop for lunch at Neptune’s Net was all that had interrupted the drive. This was the same drive he took anytime he needed to reflect on a task he had just completed. He’d accomplished the unimaginable. He had been the Sun Tzu, not of bloody battle, but of bloodless political conquest.

Lorraine Nelson is a multi-published author who lives in rural New Brunswick, on the east coast of Canada. Always a bookworm, she’s read many novels of romance and mystery over the years, finally deciding to put her pen to work at writing one.

As some of you may have heard, Six-Alarm Sexy is my hot new erotic romance series, featuring the men and women of Fire Station 44's technical rescue team. Last December, I released Under His Command , the first book in the series. This book was written as a stand-alone. However, there is a prequel. Aftershocks was originally released as part of the Romance in the Rain anthology, in which each novella has a hero or heroine from the Caldwell family, dating back to the 1850's. The problem? Readers sometimes had difficulty finding Aftershocks in the various online e-retailers. The solution? I'm releasing Aftershocks as a single title novella!

Aftershocks is the prequel to the Six-Alarm Sexy series. It is the catastrophic incident that sends reverberations throughout Seattle Fire Department’s Station 44 team of rescue firefighters long after the earthquake is over. The Six-Alarm Sexy series follows these brave men and women into their personal lives as they re-evaluate what's important to them. Some will delve deeper into existing relationships, while others will take on new and unexpected partners.
