My Random Musings- August 26, 2013

BLR-no dog

My Musings

August 24, 2013

I’ve been incredibly introspective these past two weeks. It’s just something that seems to happen to me in between books. I write a bit, research and then do nothing. It’s an odd thing if you ask me. I picture other writers ending one book and then immediately shifting into their next. I feel like an odd duck sometimes, but I can’t help it––it’s just the way it is for me. I guess it’s the end and the beginning of something new that makes me take stock in the things that worked and the things I could/should improve upon.

I didn’t have a book birthday for Entasy but I should have, she deserved one. Entasy was my first book and while I thought I was a spot on with everything, I realized afterwards I had so much to learn. This amazing and intricate world of writing is a learning process, one that educates me every day. At the end of Redemption, I was so proud of where I’d taken Kylah and Aerric’s story. I was sure I’d given the readers the HEA they were looking for when it came to them. I knew the ending may not have been what everyone had hoped for concerning Kylah and Obsydian. But I also knew that Syd’s story needed to span two more books. His past and his future will be colliding in a way that will have the readers wanting more. It’s the reason he could not be Kylah’s HEA…Obsydian has his own path to follow and one that has only just begun.

The Prophecies of The Nine series was originally a story about Kylah and her family, but one day it took on a life of its own. I remember the day I was working on plot and something shifted. Ideas began to spill out of me. I couldn’t write fast enough to get all the characters and their connections straight in my head. What started out as a somewhat simple story morphed into something else…a puzzle that needed to be carefully planned out in order for it to be understood. The underlying theme of the story is the main feature of course, The Nine’s quest for justice but within that story are their personal stories. Each member of The Nine has their own quest to discover and I believe that as I publish each book, the crazy manic thoughts of that one day will finally begin to make sense…at least I hope so.

I have decided to take a brief interlude from the Prophecies series. Devotion is in process of course but I really wanted to complete a story I started before Entasy. A story that at the time was incredibly raw but had potential. So the next book I will put out will be titled The Life & Death of Jorja Graham. A story about human woman who encounters the supernatural world through no fault of her own and ends up becoming the victim of a ghost’s revenge and a demons need to possess.  This novel will be coming out the beginning of 2014 and I cannot wait to get the readers reactions to my new paranormal thriller.

I cannot end this musing though without acknowledging the people who have helped me along the way. The statement it takes a village definitely applies to the world or writing and publishing. I would not be at this point if it weren’t for a group of people who took the time to listen and guide me. So please bear with me as I give each one of them the credit they so richly deserve.

Veronica aka V. Mariketa Nix- My compass among the crazy! I cannot thank you enough for always being there to listen to my wild ideas. I know when they spew out of my brain I want nothing more than to see if you like them, because if you do, I know I can move on knowing I may actually have something instead of needing a white jacket in a white room.

Karon R Paris- Your insight and your patience mean the world to me. You never once complained as I passed page after page for you to read and critique. Its above and beyond the call of friendship considering the amount of read-throughs you’ve had to endure. You give new meaning to the title “Beta Reader.” Thank you my friend!

Tish Thawer- I had no idea when we met online how much you’d change my life. You have spent countless hours guiding me and helping me through all the craziness that is “authorhood.” You are not only my mentor, you are my friend!! I wish there was a word stronger than thank you to express how much your guidance and friendship means to me…hey, I’m a writer maybe I can just make one up. *huge cheeky grin* I know you are laughing right now because that’s not the first time I wanted to make up words and try and make them real. LOL!!  **Shameless Plug** If you are not familiar with my friend Tish, then you really need to scoot on over to her website and check out the amazing books she has published. http://www.tishthawer.com/index.html

Sharon Kay- You are the reason I even have a chance to write this journal musing. Your belief and faith in me extended well beyond what I know I deserved at the time we met,  but you were able to see beyond my naiveté. I came to you with my manic concept and you were thrilled. In fact with each story I pitch to you, your belief in me expounds. Thank you for giving me a chance, Sharon. I hope I can live up to the goals we have set with one another. http://www.amberleafpublishing.com/

Regina Wamba- The moment you designed the cover of Entasy it came to life…Kylah came to life. The characters became more than just words on a page, Kylah became a living, breathing entity and one I felt a sincere obligation to do justice to since you had made her real. You are an amazing talent, Regina! Thank you for everything you did for me.

http://www.maeidesign.com/ Regina is the cover artist for several big names and I am thrilled I had a chance to work with her.

Kara Malinczak-  I didn’t understand the editing process when I signed on to have you edit Entasy. I had no point of reference until I turned my baby over to you. I was scared and cocky and then humbled as you and I maneuvered our way through the edits. Thank you for your honesty and your critiques. You made me realize that while I may have had a good concept, I still had A LOT to learn when it came to writing. I can remember thinking “Holy crap can I even write Redemption and make it something folks will want to read?” I still ponder that, but realize now that this is the process every writer goes through. You must crawl before you can learn how to walk…needless to say I’m still crawling. :D

In need of a great editor? You can find Kara here http://www.great-imaginations.com/  but you better contact her soon, she books up fast…I know firsthand. :P

Nancy Glasgow- I don’t know how I can thank you enough. My timeline for Redemption had been skewed so many times that I wondered if I’d ever get it out for publication. Family things pushed it back in December, then it was pushed again from a mishap with an editor who did not take the same care as my previous editor. Thankfully, you came in and helped Sharon fix Redemption last minute. You helped to make it a book I could be proud of. I am blessed to have you as my editor. Thank you will never be enough in my mind.

Emma Michaels- Author and cover designer extraordinaire! The moment I saw the cover concept for my upcoming book, The Life and Death of Jorja Graham, I was in LOVE!!! You’re extremely talented and I am so thrilled you have taken me on as a client. I have been known to be a tad “picky” (LOL) and you’ve been so patient with me. Thank you for the creative designs you given me. The redesigned cover of Redemption (to give it a more “adult” look), the cover of Devotion and the concept for the rest of the Prophecies of The Nine series as a whole. And last but not least, my wicked cool new logo. I’m official! I have a brand. I’m somebody! *chuckles* Sorry, I couldn’t help but spoof myself with a line from The Jerk.

To check out Emma’s talent, please find her at http://www.emmamichaels.com/

Much Love,

Brynn

Writer, author, smartass, and general all around jokester

More musings to come as I navigate my way through this amazing world of publishing and more opportunities for everyone to understand me…if that’s possible! LOL!

Please Welcome Jami Gray!

ShadowsEdge_HR

Everyone fears what hunts in the shadows—especially the monsters…

It takes a monster to hunt one, and for Raine McCord, forged in the maelstrom of magic and science, she’s the one for the job. In a world where the supernatural live in a shadowy existence with the mundane, a series of disappearances and deaths threatens the secrecy of her kind and indicates someone knows the monsters are alive and kicking.  Partnering up with the sexy and tantalizing Gavin Durand proves to be a challenge as dangerous as the prey she hunts.

When the trail points back to the foundation which warped Raine’s magic as a child, her torturous past raises its ugly head.  Gavin and Raine sift through a maze of lies, murder and betrayal to discover not only each other, but the emerging threat to them and the entire magical community.

Excerpt from Shadow’s Edge: Book 1 of The Kyn Kronicles:

They were passing two darkened buildings when the hushed sound of metal against cloth whispered through the air. It was followed by the soft sound of water squelching under a foot.

Raine didn’t falter, and neither did Gavin. A couple of steps more and she had both wrist blades in her hands. The black coated blades blended into her own dark garments, their silver runes turned in toward her body so no light would reflect off them. She shot a look at Gavin and saw his hand down by his thigh, a long darkened blade tucked close to his leg. She’d have to remember to ask where he kept that thing.

His free hand made a series of short motions. She gave a tiny nod to let him know she understood. At the next dark opening, they would turn a corner, and she would fade into the shadows to wait. The plan was to let the mystery stalker turn the corner and continue to follow them before he realized one of them had disappeared. They were banking on the fact most people wouldn’t be able to see clearly in the inky darkness.

As they turned the corner, Raine made her move toward the shadows. Gavin continued forward. In just steps, both realized they weren’t alone in the alleyway. It seemed the bad guys were a bit more prepared than usual. Three more figures spread out from inside the alley. She spun around, putting her back to Gavin’s. She was slightly miffed when she saw that instead of one person, two individuals blocked the opening.

Damn, how had she missed the second one?

ShadowsSoul

Some nightmares are born of love…

Raine McCord has no problem taking down the monsters of the world, it’s one of the reasons she’s so good at her job.  So playing bodyguard to Cheveyo, head Magi of the Northwest, as he consults with the Southwest Kyn should be an easy assignment. Unfortunately, simple task turns into a nightmare when Cheveyo is kidnapped and Raine is left for dead by one of the Kyn’s most feared beings, a Soul Stealer.

The Stealer’s attack leaves lasting wounds, undermining Raine’s confidence as a warrior and damaging her unruly magic. Her ability to heal her mind and spirit hinges on the one man who can touch her soul, Gavin Durand.  Compelled to face the emotions raging between them, they must embrace not only their stormy relationship but their evolving magic to escape the twisted threads of murder and betrayal to find Cheveyo.

As Raine and Gavin come together and begin to unravel the complex web of secrets and hidden vendettas haunting the Southwest Kyn, they discover unsettling new truths that threaten their very existence.

Interview:

Okay Brynn, challenge accepted.  We’ll turn the tables and see if I can’t field a few of my own interview questions (you tricky, tricky girl!).  Ready or not, here I go…

If your character(s) came with a warning label, what would it say?

Raine:   WARNING: Sharp Edges may appear under pressure

Gavin:    CAUTION: May lead you astray…

If you were to hold a dinner party for six, who would you invite and share at least one question you would have for each? Your guests don’t have to be alive and if you really want to make it fun, you can use favorite fictional characters.

I love this question.

Stephen King, master of Horror.  “Seriously dude, what happened in your childhood that brought your twisted cast of characters to vivid, wicked life?”

Patricia Briggs, author of Mercy Thompson’s series.  “You don’t mind if I just sit here and gaze at you adoringly, right? It’s not creepy or anything, I’m just hoping to absorb some creative sparks via osmosis.”

Hugh Jackman, actor.  “May I touch them?” (Get your mind out of the gutter, I’m taking about his abs!)

James Bond, 007.   “Would you mind if I did a ride along, just once? I want to take some serious notes.”

Kevin Hearne, author of the Iron Druid Chronicles.  “How did you come up with a giant squirrel? It was BRILLANT!”

Trent Reznor, musician and Nine Inch Nails founder.  “No question, sir, just thank you for your music.”

Personally, I tend to be a bit on the introverted side so the thought of being in the actual presence of one of my favorite writers makes my heart race, my knees shake and tangles my tongue (yes classic fan girl behavior).  Who could reduce you to such a level and how do you imagine your initial meeting?

I actually had the pleasure of meeting quite a few of my idols at various book signings, thanks to living in Portland, OR. and Phoenix, AZ.  Each time, I suddenly become mute and the English language waves goodbye as she sails out of the damn room.

I could barely introduce myself to Terry Brooks, so my Knight in Slightly Muddy Armor had to take over on that one. Then there was Jim Butcher, where I tried to be witty and failed miserably.   I got to meet Laurel K. Hamilton and was shocked she was shorter than me.  I’m short but that woman is TINY and looks damn good in heeled boots. She’s also very gracious with tongue tied fans.  Recently I managed to actually have a real conversation with Kevin Hearne and he was a blast, hence the reason he’s in my top six dinner companions answer above.

We won’t even get into my blog guests in the last few months—C.E. Murphy, Seanan McGuire, Kelly Meding, Jennifer Estep, and Faith Hunter. Even though they are all too polite to say so, I bet they think I’m a ditz.  It’s just so hard to keep breathing when the writers you’ve read for years actually talk to you.

Growing up, what was your favorite book, comic, game or movie and did you create a character/player that might resemble you?

Strangely enough, I don’t have many of my interviewee’s answering this question, but for me, it was a big part of my childhood.  Very first fictional universe I inserted myself into was… (drum roll please) STAR WARS.  Yep, Princess Leia didn’t stand a chance with Han Solo, he was mine…well, okay, my character who also happen to be a bounty hunter instead of some princess…

Excerpt from Soul Reborn:

“Go away,” Lilly whispered in between hitched breaths. Asar reached out to touch her and she drew away. His chest burned with agony. He forced himself to push past the rejection and move closer.

“I am sorry,” he said, softly. His voice sounded foreign, even to him.

“It doesn’t matter.” She shifted her position to be further away from him. “Just leave me alone. I’ll get what I deserve soon enough. You should be happy.”

Asar flinched. He was not use to being in this position, begging for someone’s forgiveness. “I was unprepared for all of this. I have chewed on my need for vengeance for so long, I was not able to see clearly and mistakenly included you in that hate. I am truly sorry.”

The emotions he felt were all so overwhelming. Without them for so long, it was difficult to manage. Lilly had grown a portion of his soul back. And right now, it was aching with as much vengeance as he held for the goddess.

“You’re apologizing to me?” She shook her head. “I don’t deserve your pity.”

Asar growled. Do not stop until she gives in, Nebt had said. She was not going to make this easy on him. “This is not pity. I behaved deplorably, and blamed this situation on you. It is not your fault.” He paused, taking a breath his body did not require, but his ego did. “It is mine.”

Lilly blinked a few times and then sighed. “Leave now, before the goddess takes back your soul.”

“Damn it, Lilly.” His voice rose, and the revens shifted. He pinched the bridge of his nose, trying to control the torrid of emotions threatening to blow his chance with her. “The only thing she can take that matters to me is you.”

His voice strained under the emotion. He grabbed her by the shoulders and sat her upright so he could untie the bindings. The motion brought his face close to hers. Her unblinking eyes watched him.

He stopped inches from her face. The pain in his chest subsided under her warmth, despite the burn of his skin. “I never want to lose you. I could not bear it. I…” He leaned his head down to gather strength.

The burn of her hand against his jaw made him look up. Those emerald eyes melted him to the bone. He leaned in and kissed her desperately until the pain was excruciating. He cradled her warm face in his hands and whispered against her lips. “I want you to be mine. Not because of some debt. Be with me.”

Surprisingly, the pain in his chest began to disappear. He heard of binding of the souls between mates, but he never thought it possible between him and Lilly.

Find your soul-mate.  Impossible?

Since writing my Key to the Cursed series I’ve been doing a lot of soul-searching.  The Ancient Egyptians had very complex thoughts about the soul, its makeup and its life beyond death.  It was the center of life, the most important part of an individual.

It got me thinking along the way while writing Soul Reborn, Soul Awakened and now, Soul Unbound— Do soul-mates really exist?  I’m sure everyone can say they have been in love at one time or another, but is the one they love their soul-mate?

I’ve been searching for the meaning because I wanted the relationships between my heroes and heroines to not be just another romance.  What makes the difference?

Love at first sight?  An unbreakable bond?  A growing love?

I’m not sure if there is a perfect answer or recipe.  Writing the relationships between Lilly and Asar, Kendra and Bakari, and Bomani and Siya, I have come to believe it’s not how the characters meet or the sexual tension between the couple (although that is an important ingredient).  It is how they fill the missing parts of the other.

A key to a lock.  The last missing puzzle piece.  The famous line from the Tom Cruise movie “Jerry Maguire” sums up this idea—“you complete me.”

Finding that perfect mate is not an easy road.  How many chances have we missed or walked past without knowing?  I like to think finding the perfect complement to ourselves is possible. Complementing our strengths – supporting our weaknesses. Maybe that’s what makes reading and writing romance so addicting.

Do you believe in soul-mates?  Have you found yours?  Or are you continuing your search?

A new look for the Prophecies of The Nine series!

REDEMPTION RE-RELEASE

Amber Leaf Publishing announced today the re-release of Redemption, book one of the Prophecies of The Nine series by Brynn Myers.

After studying the market trends, we noticed Redemption was still finding its way onto a lot of YA reading lists and blogs, despite the many disclaimers.  The Prophecies of The Nine series is an adult paranormal romance featuring couple based narratives where each member of The Nine’s story will be revealed as they continue to fight against Liam and the dark fae.

It became clear that while we loved the original cover for Redemption, we were going to need to update the entire series set to reflect the proper genre category of Adult PNR, as well as clarify that each character will be spotlighted.

Entasy- Where it all begins (Prequel novella released June 19, 2012)

Redemption- Kylah & Aerric’s story (Book one released March 29, 2013)

Devotion- Tynan & Vivi’s story (Late 2014)

Affliction- Rhyder’s story

Retribution- Obsydian’s story

Revolution- Calina’s story

Divination- Nadia’s story

Temptation- Zephira’s story

Vindication- Evan’s story

Annihilation- Dillon’s story

Authors After Dark Ticket For Sale

I’m sorry to announce that I will not be able to attend Author’s After Dark this year. My daughter’s school schedule has changed and she will just be starting school a day before the conference and I simply cannot be in two places at once. However, my loss is your gain!! If anyone interested in buying my ticket, please feel free to e mail me at authorbrynnmyers@yahoo.com and we can make the arrangements. Below is just an example of some of the really cool events that will be featured this year.
