The Life & Death of Jorja Graham Prologue
The boundaries which surround life from
death are at best shadowy and vague.
Who shall say where the one ends,
and the other begins?
~Edgar Allen Poe
Prologue
One Year Ago
Doors crashed on the first floor and in a rush she left me. I could hear muffled voices and wondered who she could be talking to. When the chatter gave way to screaming, my breath hitched. She was a centuries old demon, capable of taking care of herself, but that didn’t stop me from wanting to help her. In my current condition, however, I knew I’d only hinder her.
I clasped the ruby locket around my neck and made my way to the secret passage we’d created long ago. It was my refuge in case this moment ever came to pass. We’d carefully planned everything and now it was time to act.
I slid through the opening just as I heard them coming down the hall. Her words rang in my ear, “Protect the locket at all cost, Rhetta, even if that means my death.” As I lumbered my way up to the attic opening, the voices still bellowed from below. I removed one of the chimney bricks and hid the locket within the wall, making sure to replace the brick so it appeared untouched. This home had been in my family for centuries and I’d had plenty of time to construct secret spaces and hideaways.
Just past the wooden slats in the wall was another doorway leading to a spiral staircase, an escape to the back woods. I gripped the cold iron, taking each step one at a time. My legs trembled as I finally made it to the bottom stair, my nightgown ripping on the last rung. I began to ease open the door but stopped when I heard a voice, defiant but pleading. I knew no one could see me here; I was in the space between the walls, concealed from anyone’s view. I held my breath and waited for them to go.
The silence became deafening, a sharp contrast to the blood curdling scream I’d heard just moments ago. I silently mourned her loss but knew I needed to carry on. I didn’t move from my spot until I heard the booted footsteps grow more distant, until there was nothing but the sounds of the frogs croaking in the marsh behind the house. It was then that I crept out into the cool night air, taking great care with each step so as not to falter. I made it about three quarters of the way before they found me.
Blood red eyes shone brightly in the pitch black night. I didn’t have time to react, to protect myself before they were on me. I was ripped to shreds, their claws digging so deep into my skin, a hint of grey bone gleamed in the moonlight. They’d ripped off my nightgown looking for the locket and I used my dying breath to snicker, because no matter how hard they tried, they’d never find it. The blood locket would remain forever safe within the walls of my home, safe from the demons hell-bent on finding it. We won; our queen was safe.

Halloween Blog Hop
The scene I’ve chosen to share is from Entasy, the prequel novella in the Prophecies of The Nine series. It begins with Kylah, the main character, on her way to an All Hallows Eve party at her families Irish Pub. This chapter is near the end of the novella, but it’s a good teaser into the action and problems Kylah has faced throughout the story.
Chapter Fifteen
We ended up taking two cabs because with Vivi’s dress and the size of the boys, there was no way we were all getting into one car. The two love birds went in one and I sat in between Syd and Dillon in the other. We arrived in record time, and not because the bar was close, but because our cabbie seemed to think he was driving on the autobahn.
“I think I’m gonna hurl.” Both boys looked at me, hoping I was kidding. I smiled. “What? He drove like a crazy person.”
As Ty helped Vivi out of the cab, he had a confused look on his face. “How’d you get here before us?”
I flipped my hands in the air as I looked between Syd and Dillon. “See?”
A group of rowdy teenagers walking down the sidewalk put Syd in defensive mode again for the second time today. Dillon moved to stand next to me as Syd made it clear that it was time to cross the street. They were more belligerent than I would have expected, but maybe they were drunk. When they finally crossed the street, we made our way to the front door of Keenan’s where a line to get in had already formed. When the bouncers saw Dillon, they cleared a path for us and we all walked in together.
The place looked fantastic. It was all decked out in cobwebs and spooky creatures. The Halloween music was spilling out of the bar and onto the streets. There were two ten foot mummies standing guard by the bar’s double doors. A scary witch was hung above the bar in such a way that it appeared to swoop down over the patrons; her red eyes glowed as she cackled above their heads.
“Hey, you put up my scary witch. I totally forgot about her.”
Ty grabbed my shoulders. “Think nothing of it, little one. We got your back.”
Dillon broke away from our little pack as Ty and Vivi went off in another direction, pushing through the crowd. I waved to Adaira as Syd and I made our way up to the bar. “You’re looking mighty hot in that sexy pirate costume …argh me matey!” I winked.
Syd gently placed a hand on my back as we stood and talked to Adaira.
Adaira laughed. “You are looking mighty fine there yourself…stylized 13th century warrior?”
I chuckled. “Stylized middle ages, yes, but warrior, not so much.”
“Well you look great, Kylah. Guess Syd has his work cut out for him tonight. I have already seen six guys checking out your ass.” Adaira winked and then asked Syd if she could speak to him for a moment, gesturing to the other end of the bar. Syd looked at me before he acknowledged Adaira.
“I’ll be right back, I will only be a few steps away.”
I threw my hands in the air. “Oh my god, I’ll be right here. I won’t move, I promise.”
As he made his way to the end of the bar, I sat on a barstool that someone had just vacated. Adaira was right, I suddenly felt like a giant piece of steak that half the men in the bar wanted to devour. At least when Syd was next to me, they kept it civil. Not a problem, I’m a big girl, I can handle a few stares. Adaira must have told one of the other bartenders to bring a beer down because suddenly there it was in front of me.
“Thanks.” I didn’t recognize the girl dressed in a red devil costume, but there was a lot of extra staff around tonight.
Before she left, sandalwood and leather filled the space around me and I wondered if she had been wearing a special perfume. The scent kept getting stronger and more familiar; I knew I had smelled that combination before, but where? I turned to see if it was one of the men standing nearby, but quickly dismissed the two Ewoks to my right. Yeah, the furry Star Wars creatures couldn’t possibly smell that heavenly.
“A beer, huh? Not your usual choice, but there are a lot of things different about you these days.”
“I’m afraid you have…” I turned around to see who was talking, but my voice froze mid-sentence as I looked up at the man before me.
My body warmed instantly when I looked into his eyes. The man from my dreams… this is so not freaking happening; he was just a fantasy. I stood there motionless and speechless for what seemed like forever, just staring at him. He was dressed like a gothic vampire, complete with fangs and preternatural eyes. They swirled a golden amber color that blended with copper flames. Wow, who made his costume? He looks so authentic.
Mystery man brushed his hand over my cheek when he moved the hair away from my face. Normally this would warrant a kick to the groin, but I was too enthralled by the fact that my dream man was standing before me. I bit my lower lip and he growled as he moved closer to me, his body pressing against mine. In that moment, I was certain I lost all rational thought. I mentally traveled to a place where this man and I were naked and writhing in bed. Hell, the way my body was responding to his, I would be more than okay if he took me right here in the crowd.
“Aerric.” I snapped out of my daze and turned to see Syd standing behind me, his gaze focused and his tone cool and insensitive.
“Uh…you know him, Syd?”
My mystery man spoke again and I swear I almost died. Damn that voice of his. “Yes, we unfortunately know one another.” He nodded his head at Syd then turned his attention back to me.
“Kylah, we need to head upstairs. There are some people Vivi wanted you to meet, and they are in the VIP section.”
“Oh…okay. It was nice to meet you. Aerric, is it?” I extended my hand to shake it, but instead, he took my hand in his and gently kissed it.
“Yes, my name is Aerric. It’s nice to meet you, Kylah.”
Syd took my other hand and led me towards the stairs, away from Aerric. I could have sworn he growled when Syd touched me. I guess I should have been offended by Aerric’s arrogance, but instead my heart skipped a beat just thinking of him. I wanted to run back to him and kiss him until we were both breathless, but that was a pipe dream because with all this personal security, I didn’t see a make-out session in my near future.
The noise level in the bar was beyond loud; the crowd was now thick with people of all shapes and sizes trying to impress each other with their costumes. I looked down and saw at least three naughty Snow Whites, but none of them were Olivia. I looked around for Frank, too, but I wasn’t completely sure what he was dressing up as, so I was going to have to wait until he found me.
As I followed Syd up the stairs, I turned to look back, using my new vantage point to try and find Aerric, but he was gone. Shit. Did I just imagine that whole encounter?
“Kylah!” I turned my head to see who was calling me and recognized Layne. I tugged on Syd’s hand and told him to give me just one second. He stopped and waited as I went back down a few steps.
“Hey, you look great! Love the Victorian garb, and the powdered wig is the perfect touch.”
“Dead Victorian zombie, actually.” She stepped back to look at my outfit. “Badass warrior from the 13th century, but you improved the look with those Louboutin’s?”
I chuckled. “You’re the second person tonight to ask me that, but no, just a design I dreamt up.”
Layne winked as she looked past me. “Is that your date?”
I looked over my shoulder but only saw the back of Syd’s head because he was talking to a beautiful woman with dark hair and lavender eyes. Man people really went all out this year with their costumes. I looked back at Layne. “No, just a friend. What about you? Where’s your date?”
“Oh, he’s down there somewhere. Would love to introduce you to him later though.”
“Sounds good, I’ll find you in a bit. I’m needed upstairs…work stuff.”
“No worries. I am certain we will run into each other soon.” Layne turned to leave as Syd touched my shoulder.
“I didn’t mean to interrupt you.”
“Oh no, you didn’t interrupt, she was just saying hi.”
When we reached the top of the stairs, I punched the code to the secure door and walked in with Syd hot on my heels. The VIP section wasn’t packed at all; only a few private tables were occupied. I didn’t recognize these people, but they were certainly noticeable. The woman with the lavender eyes walked up to a male that seemed to exude sex. His shaved head appeared harsh compared to the softness of his eyes, but maybe that was all part of his costume. Two women that looked like sisters stood talking to my cousin Evan, but he had yet to notice me.
As I waited for my chance to talk to Evan, I leaned over the railing and realized the party was actually on the first floor and not up here. As I scanned the crowded pub, I finally found him. Aerric was casually leaning against the bar and looking right at me. He smiled a sexy grin and tipped his glass in my direction. I smiled but was interrupted when Evan grabbed me from behind and lifted me off the floor.
“What the hell is it with you Keenan men and tossing me around like a rag doll?”
“I missed you, little one.” He laughed a hearty laugh and put me back down.
I adjusted my outfit and moved the wig on my head to make it fit perfectly again. “I missed you too, Evan, but you don’t have to pick me up.”
The loud banging on the VIP door put everyone on this floor on edge. They all went on high alert, waiting to see who dared make such a racket. Syd opened the door and Aerric barged in, his eyes set on me.
“Aerric, this isn’t necessary and you know it. It was Evan. She’s not in any danger.”
“Um, I’m confused here. You two say you know one another, but exactly how do you know each other?”
Syd never took his eyes off of Aerric when he responded to my question. “He works for your grandmother. He is her personal guard and Dillon thought it would be a good idea to add security he was already familiar with instead of strangers.”
“Are you fucking kidding me? So it wasn’t bad enough that he sent you to babysit me, Syd, but he actually sent all three of you?” My anger reached a boiling point as I poked Evan in the chest. “You’re in on this too, huh, Evan?” The fact that he hung his head was answer enough for me.
“DAMMIT!” I pushed past Aerric, who was blocking the doorway, and ran down the stairs, but was stopped by the crowd at the bottom.
I felt a hand on my neck and turned to yell at Syd for following me, except it wasn’t Syd. It was a man with black makeup around his eyes, which made his own eyes seem black as tar. The paleness of his skin along with those eyes made my skin crawl. I forcefully pushed past the people to get away from him, and stumbled when I reached the bottom step. The man stared down at me as he licked his lips. What the hell?
When I reached the bar, I leaned over to ask Adaira where Dillon was, and she shrugged. “Haven’t seen him, sweetie. I’ll tell him you are looking for him though.”
I looked back to see if the man was following me, but he was gone.
“Yeah okay, thanks.”
I turned to walk towards the front door but was pulled into a deep crushing hug.
“Kylah, baby! Look at you.”
I grinned as Frank continued to gush. I hugged him again, trying to calm my now rattled nerves. “You okay? You’re shaking.”
“Yeah, I’m fine.” I changed the subject by checking out Frank’s costume.
Frank had gone all out, creating the perfect dominatrix costume; he wore a skin tight leather outfit with a deep v that went all the way to his navel. When Frank was dressed as Coco, she was a stunningly beautiful woman. By the way the men were staring at her, I was sure they were unaware that Frank was actually a man. I felt a hand on my shoulder and shuddered.
“Please let me explain.” Syd’s voice was firm but gentle as he spoke.
“Pissed her off already, baby? That didn’t take long.”
“Hi, Frank.” Syd’s focus was on me until he looked up to see Coco instead. His jaw dropped when he looked at her a second time.
“Yeah, baby, not Frank…Coco.” She leaned over and kissed Syd’s cheek, startling him. I raised an eyebrow at Syd’s reaction; I was certain his look was more about the invasion of his personal space than the fact that a drag queen just kissed him.
“Coco it is, but at the moment, I need to speak with Kylah in private. Please excuse us.”
I didn’t really have a chance to refuse because I was being dragged into an empty corner of the bar.
“I’ve never lied to you, and I have no intention of starting now. You didn’t ask who was going to be on the staff tonight, so why would I tell you? When you asked who Aerric was, I told you without hesitation, so please do me the honor of not insulting me by calling me a liar.”
I stood there fuming, but he was right. I was taking out my anger on him, when in reality I should have been taking out my frustration on Dillon.
“Fine, Syd, but this is bullshit and you know it.”
“It may be, Kylah, but the fact remains that you are in danger. From who, I do not know, but I will not stand by and let someone harm you because you are too stubborn to accept my help.”
I lowered my head and steadied my resolve. “Let’s just try and have a good time tonight then. I’ll deal with Dillon’s bullshit tomorrow.”
I looked up to see Aerric a few steps behind Syd, his arms crossed in front of his broad chest. I wanted to be angry at him too, but from the way he was staring at me, I could sense it was out of concern and the fact that Syd was still holding my hands. I moved out of Syd’s grip and crossed over to Aerric.
“You may work for my grandmother and believe that allows you some authority over this situation, but I can guarantee you I am perfectly capable of taking care of myself. So drop the macho protective bullshit and go guard someone or something else.”
I pushed past Aerric but I didn’t make it far. I doubled over in pain, gripping my stomach, a wave of intense nausea sweeping over me.
Aerric was the one to reach me first but Syd was right behind him. “What’s wrong, Kylah?”
I wanted to tell them but I didn’t know myself. I took hold of Syd’s arm to steady myself when my vision suddenly changed. Ty and Vivi were in the alley behind the bar fighting strange creatures with razor sharp teeth. While these images seemed unrealistic, I knew they were not costumes. There really were monsters attacking my brother and his wife. I broke free of Syd and Aerric’s grip and ran past the bathrooms towards the back door that lead to the alley.
I slammed the door with my hands and it burst open, slamming against the wall. I watched as the man from the stairs appeared next to Ty. Tynan had been standing with his back to Vivi in a protective stance, but as she ducked and stabbed one of those monsters, it left him open and vulnerable. The man with the black eyes glared in my direction as he moved behind my brother and stabbed him. A slow menacing grin replaced his stern look as he watched Tynan drop to the ground.
“NOOOOOOOOO!!!!” My scream echoed off the alley walls as Vivi turned to see Tynan collapse.
The man behind him was no longer a man but a swirl of thick black smoke. He left as quickly as he had arrived, and I watched as people from the VIP section killed the rest of the monsters who lingered. Vivi cradled my brother in her arms, crying and speaking to him in Gaelic. I wanted to run to her…run to Tynan but my feet failed to move. I forced myself to take a step but stopped a second later when Vivi turned to look at me, her eyes pitch black. She stared at me for a moment and then began to chant.
I had never heard such words: not Gaelic, not Latin…what was it she was saying? Tears streamed down her face as she continued chanting. A bright light began to surround my brother and rise up from his body. I heard her say to Tynan, “I love you too much to let you go, my love. I have to do this in order to save you.” Tynan didn’t speak; he just stared at her with a blank, vapid gaze. I took another step but someone grabbed my arm to stop me.
Unwilling to be detained, I ran towards Ty, but halfway across the alley, the bright light that was surrounding my brother was now headed straight for me. The light traveled across the space between us and knocked me backwards when it slammed into my chest. I staggered, trying to stop myself from falling, when a cool sensation swept through my body. Instantly, I felt sorrow and peace and loss and love, too many emotions all at once. My life, all of my life began clipping off like a movie reel stuck in reverse. The images moved so fast that it was difficult to keep track of them all. They kept flashing, one right after the other: my brothers, Vivi, our place here in New York, the bar, all of us back in our home in Stowe. The memories continued to rewind, back to a time when Mom and Dad were alive, to when I was training with The Nine, and then I saw my grandmothers hand me the tonic that literally changed my life.
My breath hitched in my throat as I looked around to everyone here in the alley: The Nine. I recognized them all. They were all here in this time, in this moment. I looked around to see them all looking at me with shock in their eyes. My attention shifted to Obsydian and Aerric, who stood on either side of me, watching and waiting. The side door crashed open and Dillon came barging through, his eyes a smoky white which meant he was struggling with maintaining his human form. How? How was it that I was seeing all of this now?
Lightning began to crash overhead and I looked over at Vivi, who was now crying uncontrollably; she was so distracted by Tynan that she didn’t see the monster come up behind her. I felt my hands heating, the anger and fear over what had transpired consuming my every thought, and before I could process what was happening, the creature behind Vivi fell into a pile of ashes. My eyes were filled with heated tears as I ran to my brother’s side. I took his hand in mine and tried to comfort Vivi over this tragic loss, but her pain was too overwhelming.
As I reached for Vivi, I heard my voice but the words were not my own. “Do not cry my love, we will find a way to fix this. I will come back to you.”
Vivi looked at me, her tears flowing freely as she spoke. “I know, my love, and I know that Kylah will do everything she can to keep you safe. She will bring you home to us when the time is right.”
All of a sudden, the alley became eerily silent and very crowded. Evan, Zephira, and Rhyderich were now walking towards us. Syd began to bark orders and commands, which they all acknowledged and quickly executed. Syd pointed at Aerric and spoke under his breath. Evan picked me up by my arms and pulled me away from my brother.
“Kylah, I need you to listen to me.” Evan’s thick Irish brogue was slow and deliberate. “We need to take you out of here. We need to take you home.”
I snapped out of Evan’s hold and started to run, but Aerric caught me in his arms.
“I’ve got her, Evan.” Loud banging and something that sounded like an explosion shifted my focus from Aerric. I felt safe in his arms, and yet I wanted to turn and attack whatever was coming down the alley. Odd sensations continued to surge through my body. A burning heat stirred just beneath my skin; a liquid blue flame began to coat my hands as I looked into Aerric’s eyes. He didn’t seem fazed by this at all, in fact, he seemed relieved.
I turned to see the creatures as they came closer. Black streaks covering their pale faces, moving as their red eyes glowed in the darkness of the night. The flames in my hands began to creep up my arms; my eyes burned as I watched the creatures move towards me, their sharp fangs dripping with blood and saliva. The others moved to attack but that wasn’t necessary because I was not going to allow another person to die here tonight. I heard Ty’s voice in my head trying to calm me, but I ignored it because I looked over to see his body still lying on the ground. Vivi looked over and then vanished with my brother in her arms.
Dillon’s voice was the next one I heard. “Kylah…NO!”
Flames moved outward beyond my body. The flames rose higher as they slithered towards their prey. The creatures kept coming as if they were untouchable, but the flames changed once again to bright white.
Syd’s voice boomed over the high pitched screeching. “Aerric take her to the labyrinth…NOW!”
Aerric wrapped his arms around my flaming body and flashed us out of the alley.
