Path of the Dead; Book One of the Hungry Ghosts series

This isa PRE-RELEASEreview for Timothy Baker’s debut novel, Path of the Dead; Book One of the Hungry Ghosts series. (It will bepublished through Ragnarok and availablefor purchase on May 5th.) The back of the book says EXACTLY what my original idea for this review would say, the back blurb says–

Nestled on the foot of Tibet’s sacred Seche La Mountain is the village of Dagzê. The normally quiet streets are bustling with the steady stream of arrivals and preparations for the coming Festival of t...

If all goes well, the e-bookwill be picked up by Amazon, Kobo, and Barnes and Noble within the next few days. Because it is a short story of under 5K words, I will not offer a print version, it would betoo costly for readers. The cover art was provided by horror author/artist Greg Chapman.

Manifesto UF

Manifesto UF is that latest anthology I managed to squeeze a story within. Therefore, I have an investment in this review. To keep it honest and fair, I will only write about my five favorite stories in this volume and share some of the inside details of my story, Bloody Red Sun of Fantastic L.A.

Personally, I love short fiction. I enjoy writing it, and even more, I love reading it. The best part of an anthology is that I get to sample between ten and thirty authors, some more experienced and...

Seven Questions with Zachary Jernigan

Today’s guest is Zachary Jernigan, author of No Return, Published by Night Shade Books, released in March 2013. I had the opportunity to meet Zachary at the 2013 71st World SciFi Convention held in San Antonio Texas, and I’m honored that he has bravely challenged seven of my deadly questions.

Hi Zachary, welcome.

Please tell us a little bit about yourself. (Anything you choose, where you went to school, what awards you may have won, or more interesting still, tell us how you were raised by a ma...

What Portland Writers Missed

NIWA, the Northwest Independent Writers’ Association pulled off their Inaugural Writer’s Symposium in sparkly Technicolor. It was a beautiful thing, and along with thirteen other attendees, we took full advantage thereof. The heaping pounds of marketing information and education that we’d received will give us an edge over the coming year, and all it cost us was one Superbowl and $225.

2014 Symposium

I’m not sharing with you what I’d learned (insert smiley face,) you’ll just have to go next year.

McMenamin’s...

Looking to the New Year

Happy New Year!!

As I did early last year, I’d written a review of my favorite book of 2013. However, as I was putting the last couple paragraphs together, it became increasingly clear that posting this review was a bad idea. You see, the book was an anthology and the person who had compiled that collection of short stories is putting together a new anthology for 2014. I want to be in that anthology and wrote an awesome story that is almost ready to send.

Here is the train wreck I just avoided—...

Happy Holidays

Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah. It really is that simple. May your holiday be filled with cheer and surrounded by people who love you simply because you are. These are hard times to live the consumer lifestyle, so remember these holidays were never about stuff and things, but sharing time with people who love you.

See you next year.

Retreating to Winter

I haven’t figured out what to do with this page this month. There is a year’s worth of samples of my writing (Free Fanfic) at this link here, but it has weened interest. Perhaps I should move into the ‘Pictures of Dogs Wearing Funny Hats’ stage. Maybe revive clips from old Benny Hill Shows? Political Memes? (Oooh, now that is a consuming, self-destructive idea.) Perhaps, I can get Geico to sponsor me–Jake Elliot Fiction brought to you by Geico.

See--dogs wear hats. Sure beats a Geico commercial, eh?
